Use /locate structure #minecraft:village in Java Edition or /locate structure village in Bedrock Edition. The command returns coordinates for the nearest matching structure in your current dimension; it does not teleport you there.
Use the command for your Minecraft edition

village is the form shown in the Bedrock command reference and Minecraft commands guide. |
These commands search for the nearest matching structure in the current dimension and report coordinates. They do not promise a maximum search distance, a safe route, or a village in a particular biome.
Find the coordinates and travel there
- Open the chat or command-entry area in your world.
- Enter the command for your edition and run it.
- Read the coordinates returned in chat.
- If you want to teleport, run
/tp @s X ~ Z, replacingXandZwith the returned horizontal coordinates. The~keeps your current vertical position; you can instead enter a specific Y coordinate. - Check your surroundings after teleporting.
/locate only identifies a location. You must use a separate teleport command to move your player.
Enable commands or check permissions
- Java single-player: Enable “Allow Commands” when creating the world.
- Bedrock single-player: Enable “Allow Cheats” in the world settings. The Bedrock reference also lists Game Director permission as required for
/locate. - Multiplayer: Whether you can run commands depends on the server’s permissions and configuration.
If the command is rejected
Command syntax differs between Java and Bedrock, and it has changed across versions. Try the in-game autocomplete or run /help locate to check what your installed version accepts. Java 1.18.2 release notes record a change to the /locate command parameter; the Java 1.18.2 release notes document that change.

For Bedrock, the stable reference lists the syntax as /locate structure <structure> [useNewChunksOnly]; the optional Boolean defaults to false. Its popular-commands example uses /locate structure village. If the game reports that it cannot find a match, the reference says the command prints an error when the specified structure or biome is not found.
What the command does—and does not—identify
The command locates the nearest matching structure in the dimension where you run it. The cited references do not establish a way to use these commands to filter for a particular village type or guarantee an inhabited village. If you need a specific kind of destination, inspect the returned location in-game rather than assuming the result meets that condition.
