To find an Ancient City, search deep underground beneath mountainous terrain—especially jagged peaks or snowy slopes—and explore the Deep Dark around Y -51. That is Minecraft Help’s official depth reference, not a guarantee that a city is directly below every mountain or inside every Deep Dark biome. Descend through a cave or a controlled staircase, never by digging straight down: Ancient Cities occupy large caverns.
Where Ancient Cities generate
Ancient Cities generate in the Deep Dark biome, far underground. Mojang points players toward mountainous Overworld terrain, including jagged peaks and snowy slopes, because Deep Dark areas generate below low-erosion regions such as mountain peaks and plateaus. A mountain is a useful place to begin searching, but it does not guarantee a city beneath it. Minecraft Help’s guide to rare structures identifies the Deep Dark as the city’s biome.
Keep the biome and the structure distinct: finding sculk and entering a Deep Dark means you have reached the right kind of area, not that a city must be nearby. Mojang describes where cities can generate but does not say every Deep Dark patch contains one. If you find no city, explore another Deep Dark area or use a seed map.
What Y level should you search?
Use Y -51 as your target depth. Minecraft Help gives -51 as the reference for Ancient Cities. A third-party locator describes approximate city floor or center positions around Y -52, so small differences in the route or coordinates are unsurprising. Neither number guarantees a city at a particular spot; treat them as depth cues while exploring the Deep Dark.

A safe survival route
- Start near mountainous terrain. Look for jagged peaks, snowy slopes, or other mountain areas rather than choosing a random surface location. This narrows your search but cannot identify a city by itself.
- Find a cave entrance or descend under control. Follow a natural cave, or make a staircase or protected shaft you can use to return. Record your coordinates and keep track of your route.
- Approach the target depth. Explore deep underground around Y -51, watching for sculk that signals the Deep Dark. Do not dig vertically into unknown space: an Ancient City is built inside a large cavern, and a shaft can open over a dangerous drop.
- Search the biome, not just one point. Move carefully through the Deep Dark and look for city structures. If the biome is present but the city is not, continue elsewhere or switch to a locator rather than assuming it must be just beyond your current position.
How to avoid summoning a Warden
The main danger is sound and vibration. Sculk sensors detect vibrations from actions such as moving, placing or breaking blocks, and dropped items. A sensor can alert a nearby sculk shrieker, which can summon a Warden. Mojang describes the Warden as blind and guided by sound and smell, making quiet, deliberate movement more useful than rushing through the cavern. Mojang’s Deep Dark guide explains these hazards.
- Bring plenty of torches so you can see and mark the route.
- Bring wool: it muffles vibrations and helps reduce the risk of alerting sculk sensors.
- Avoid unnecessary movement and block breaking near sculk. Be especially cautious around sensors and shriekers.
- Keep an escape route and your return coordinates in mind while exploring.
Commands and seed maps: faster alternatives
If you are willing to use commands or an external map, you can look up a location instead of searching entirely by hand. These options depend on your edition, version, and—if you use a seed map—your world seed.

Command syntax can vary by edition and version, so check the syntax for your game if it returns an error. Using commands also requires cheats to be enabled.

Using a seed map
Enter your world seed in a finder that supports your edition and version, then use its Ancient City coordinates to guide your search. The reviewed Minecraft Tools page says its Java locations are exact and Bedrock results are approximate. Treat those accuracy labels as the site’s own description; they are not an official Mojang guarantee.

Mojang names echo shards, used to craft a recovery compass, disc fragments, candles, and two armor trim designs among Ancient City rewards. These are examples, not a complete or guaranteed loot list.
