Your Steam friend code is on the Add a Friend page. In the desktop client, open Friends & Chat in the lower-right corner, choose the friend-plus icon, and copy Your Friend Code. In a browser, open Steam’s Friends area and choose Add a Friend. To connect, enter the other person’s code in the same page and send the request; they then approve it from pending invitations.
A code is optional. You can also find someone through Steam Community profile search, select Add Friend on the profile, or send a Steam invite link. The important limitation is account status: every Steam account can receive invitations, but a limited account cannot send them.

Where to find your Steam friend code
Steam places friend codes in its friend-management screen rather than in your profile’s public description. The exact route depends on whether you are using the desktop client or a web browser, but both lead to the same Add a Friend tools.
Desktop Steam client
- Open Steam and look at the lower-right corner of the client window.
- Select Friends & Chat to open the friends panel.
- Choose the friend-plus icon, or open Add a Friend from the friends panel.
- Find the section labeled Your Friend Code.
- Copy the code and send it to the person you trust through a private channel.
The code identifies your Steam account for friend invitations. It is not a password, a Steam Guard credential, or a license key. Sharing the code lets someone locate the account for a friend request, but it does not give them access to your account.

How to add someone with a Steam friend code
Both people do not need to be in the same game or on the same server. One person shares a code, and the other uses Steam’s Add a Friend field to create the invitation.
- Open Friends & Chat in the desktop client, or open the Friends area in a browser.
- Select the friend-plus icon or Add a Friend.
- Enter the other person’s code in the Add a Friend field. Paste it carefully instead of retyping it when possible.
- Review the account shown by Steam so you do not invite the wrong profile.
- Send the friend request.
- Tell the recipient to open pending invitations and accept the request.
The request is not complete until the recipient accepts it. If the recipient does not see it, have them check pending invitations and confirm that the code belonged to the intended account. A mistaken code can lead to a request being sent to an unrelated profile with a similar name.

Sharing the code safely
- Send only the friend code through a trusted private message or another channel where you can verify the recipient.
- Never send your Steam password, Steam Guard code, recovery code, or email verification code with the friend code.
- If someone asks for login details “to accept” a request, stop. A friend invitation does not require your password or security codes.
How to add a Steam friend without a code
Steam documents several alternatives when a code is inconvenient or unavailable. These methods still create a normal friend invitation and still require the sender’s account to be allowed to send invitations.

Search the Steam Community
- Open Steam Community or the Friends area.
- Search for the person’s Steam name or profile.
- Open the profile that matches the person you know. Check the avatar, profile details, or other identifying information before acting.
- Select Add Friend on the profile.
- Wait for the person to accept from their pending invitations.
Name search is convenient, but display names are not unique and can change. Compare the full profile before sending a request; a matching name alone is not reliable identification.
Use a Steam invite link
- Open Add a Friend from Friends & Chat or the browser Friends area.
- Choose the page’s option to create or share an invite link.
- Copy the link and send it to the intended recipient through a trusted channel.
- Have the recipient open the link while signed in to the correct Steam account and follow the prompt to accept the invitation.
An invite link can be easier than copying a string of numbers, especially when you are coordinating outside Steam. Treat it like an invitation: share it only with the person you want to add, and do not post it publicly.
Choosing between a code, profile search, and an invite link
Each method reaches the same friend-request system. The practical difference is how much information the two people have and how much chance there is of selecting the wrong account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Method | Do both users need to know a code? | Sender account requirement | Speed and precision | When it is easiest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Friend code | No. One person shares a code and the other enters it. | The sender must be allowed to send invitations; limited accounts cannot send friend invites. | Usually the most direct and precise option because the code points to an account without relying on a display-name search. | You are adding someone remotely and can exchange a short code privately. |
| Steam Community profile search | No. | The sender must be allowed to send invitations; limited accounts cannot send friend invites. | Can be quick, but names are not unique and profiles should be checked before inviting. | You know the person’s Steam name or can recognize their profile. |
| Invite link | No. | The sender must be allowed to send invitations; limited accounts cannot send friend invites. | Often the easiest method to share once, because the recipient follows the link instead of entering a code. | You are communicating in another app and want a tap-or-click invitation. |
Use a code when accuracy matters and you can verify the number. Use profile search when you can confidently identify the person’s account. Use a link when exchanging a code would be awkward, but keep the link private.

Steam account limits and why a request may be blocked
Steam distinguishes between receiving and sending invitations. Steam Support states: “Every account on Steam can receive friend invites. However limited user accounts cannot send friend invites.” A limited account can therefore accept an invitation sent by someone else, but it cannot initiate the request itself.
If the Add a Friend controls are unavailable or Steam refuses to send your request, check whether your account is limited. The other person can send the invitation instead, and you can accept it, provided their account is permitted to send invitations.
Friend-list capacity is another limit. Steam Support says the initial friend cap is 250. Each Steam profile level adds five friend slots. Outstanding invitations you have sent also count toward capacity, so a long list of unanswered requests can prevent new additions even when your visible friends list does not look full.
What to do when capacity is reached
- Open your sent or outstanding invitations and identify requests that are no longer needed.
- Cancel stale invitations to free capacity.
- Review your current friend list and remove accounts you no longer need, if appropriate.
- Raise your Steam profile level when you need a larger friend cap; each level adds five slots.
Do not assume that buying or installing a game changes the friend cap. The documented increase is tied to Steam profile level.

Troubleshooting a missing or failed friend request
The Add a Friend page is missing
First, verify that you are using the signed-in account you expect. In the client, open Friends & Chat from the lower-right corner and then the friend-plus icon. In a browser, enter the Friends area and choose Add a Friend. If sending controls remain unavailable, check whether the account is limited.
The request appears to be stuck
- Ask the recipient to inspect pending invitations rather than searching for a new request repeatedly.
- Confirm the recipient is checking the same Steam account that owns the profile you intended to add.
- Check whether an earlier invitation is already pending. Sending another request may not create a second usable invitation.
- Review your outstanding sent invitations and cancel obsolete ones if your capacity is full.
You may have used the wrong profile
Display names can match, and a person can change a display name after you copied it. Compare the profile’s avatar and other identifying details before sending. If you used a code, ask the owner to confirm the code and the account shown by Steam. Do not keep sending requests to several similar profiles; that creates confusion and can contact the wrong person.
One of you may have blocked the other
Check both users’ blocked lists. A block can prevent normal interaction, and Steam does not bypass a block. Steam also does not disclose whether another user has blocked you, so an unexplained failure cannot be diagnosed solely from the error message. The practical checks are to verify the account, inspect pending invitations, confirm that neither user has blocked the other, and check friend capacity.

The other person cannot send the request
If the sender has a limited account, they cannot initiate a friend invitation even though they can receive one. Have an eligible account send the request, then let the limited account accept it. If both accounts are limited, neither can initiate the invitation; account status must change before one can send.

Security checks before accepting a Steam invitation
Friend codes and invite links are identification tools, not proof that a message is genuine. Scammers can copy a real profile name or send a link that leads to a fraudulent login page.
- Ignore unsolicited messages from anyone claiming to be Steam Support through Discord, Steam Chat, or another chat service. Steam Support warns never to follow instructions from someone claiming to represent support through those channels, even if the message appears to come from a friend or mentions a false report.
- Verify that a login page is on an official Steam domain before entering credentials. Do not sign in through a shortened or unexpected link sent by a stranger.
- Never disclose your password, Steam Guard code, recovery code, or email verification code to a friend, moderator, trader, or supposed support agent.
- If a link feels suspicious, open Steam yourself, navigate to the Friends area, and check invitations there instead of using the message link.
A legitimate friend request can be handled entirely through Steam’s own Friends and Community interfaces. No outside “verification,” payment, remote-access session, or security-code exchange is needed.
A quick decision checklist
- Have you exchanged a code? Open Add a Friend and enter it for the most precise lookup.
- No code, but you know the profile? Search Steam Community, verify the profile, and select Add Friend.
- Sharing outside Steam? Create an invite link from Add a Friend and send it privately.
- Can nobody send the request? Check whether the intended sender has a limited account.
- Is the request failing? Check pending invitations, blocks, outstanding sent requests, and the 250-plus-five-per-profile-level capacity rule.
- Does a message ask for credentials? Stop and use Steam’s own Friends area instead.
For most people, the friend code is the safest balance of speed and precision: find it under Add a Friend, share only that code, enter the other person’s code, and have the recipient accept the pending invitation.
