The Secret Source Automaton: Configuration Device is at Toyac Springs in Natlan. To interrupt its Boltsphere Cannon, climb the Solid Phlogiston during its charge and enter the energy field around its Accretion Mechanism. This is the specific Secret Source Automaton meant here—not the separate Overseer Device.
Where to find the Secret Source Automaton
Open the Natlan map and look for the Configuration Device at Toyac Springs. HoYoverse identifies Toyac Springs as its location in the Version 5.1 update details. A HoYoLAB guide to reaching the Version 5.1 boss also covers its Natlan location. Use the in-game map to plan the final approach; the available location information does not establish a reliable sequence of waypoint-by-waypoint directions.
Make sure you have the right automaton
The full name is Secret Source Automaton: Configuration Device. Natlan also has a separate boss called the Secret Source Automaton: Overseer Device. If you are looking for the Toyac Springs boss and its cannon-charge mechanic, select the Configuration Device.
How to beat the Configuration Device
The central mechanic is tied to Nightsoul’s Blessing. HoYoverse explains that “When characters enter and maintain the Nightsoul’s Blessing state, the Secret Source Automaton: Configuration Device will start progressing through its Adaptive Countermeasures.” The boss’s attack pattern can therefore change as characters enter and remain in that state; the official notice does not prescribe a particular team or rotation.

Interrupt the Boltsphere Cannon
- Watch for the Configuration Device to begin preparing its Boltsphere Cannon.
- As it charges, the boss activates an Accretion Mechanism that digs into Solid Phlogiston and gathers phlogiston, producing an energy field.
- Climb the Solid Phlogiston and enter the energy field around the mechanism. Doing so destroys the Accretion Mechanism and interrupts the cannon charge.
Prioritize reaching the mechanism when this sequence begins: the key response is interacting with the field, not relying on a specific element or character lineup.

The Configuration Device drops an ascension material used by Xilonen, according to the HoYoLAB location guide. Game8 also lists Mavuika and Lan Yan as users of the drop in its Configuration Device guide. Check the characters’ current in-game ascension requirements if you need to confirm whether you should farm this boss for a particular character.
