Rare Ghosts appear only in ScareScraper, not in Luigi’s Mansion 3’s hotel Story Mode. Look for them on floor 5 of a 10-floor tower, or floors 5, 10, and 15 of a 20-floor tower. Stun each ghost with the Strobulb, vacuum it with the Poltergust, then Slam it while sucking to deal damage.
Where to find Rare Ghosts
Nintendo says Rare Ghosts are special ghosts with special powers, found only in ScareScraper mode. They do not appear as Rare Ghost encounters in Story Mode. Nintendo’s Play Nintendo guide identifies the eligible floors:
- 10-floor tower: Floor 5.
- 20-floor tower: Floors 5, 10, and 15.
These are encounter opportunities, not a guarantee that a particular variant will appear. The 20-floor tower option was added in Ver. 1.3.0, released March 4, 2020, so update the game if that option is missing. Nintendo’s Ver. 1.3.0 update notes also record five new Rare Ghost types in that update.
How to reach an eligible floor
- From the game’s title menu, select ScareScraper. If it is unavailable, progress through Story Mode until Luigi obtains Gooigi; Nintendo Support says ScareScraper opens after that point. See Nintendo’s ScareScraper instructions.
- Choose a 10-floor tower for the floor-5 opportunity, or a 20-floor tower for opportunities on floors 5, 10, and 15.
- Complete each floor’s objectives to advance. The Rare Ghost opportunity is on the eligible floors, not every floor.
- Capture the Rare Ghost when encountered. Repeat the run or continue to another eligible floor if you are looking for additional encounters.
How to capture a Rare Ghost
Use the standard Poltergust sequence: flash the ghost with the Strobulb to stun it, start vacuuming with the Poltergust, and Slam while holding on to inflict damage. Nintendo’s gameplay guidance notes that every ghost has a weakness; Rare Ghosts add special powers and can be difficult to catch. Avoid assuming every variant has the same behavior.

If playing cooperatively and you need a particular Gallery entry, coordinate who will finish the capture. A specialist guide reports that the player who personally completes the capture receives that ghost’s Gallery credit; Nintendo confirms that captured ghosts count toward E. Gadd’s Gallery. The credit detail comes from the specialist guide, not Nintendo’s support material.
Choosing a tower and playing with others
| Tower | Eligible floors | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| 10 floors | 5 | One eligible floor opportunity; shorter route. |
| 20 floors | 5, 10, and 15 | Three eligible floor opportunities; longer route. |
The floor counts come from Nintendo’s guidance; neither tower length guarantees a specific Rare Ghost variant. ScareScraper supports up to eight players through local wireless or online play. Online features require a Nintendo Switch Online membership; see Nintendo Support for play options.

Rare Ghost types and update history
A specialist guide names nine original variants: Speed Goob, Speed Hammer, Speed Oozer, Regen Goob, Regen Hammer, Regen Slinker, Bomb Goob, Bomb Hammer, and Bomb Oozer. It describes Speed variants as moving very fast, Regen variants as recovering health when not engaged, and Bomb variants as throwing bombs.
That nine-name list is not the complete current roster. Nintendo’s update history says Ver. 1.3.0 added five Rare Ghost types on March 4, 2020, and Ver. 1.4.0 added another five on April 30, 2020. Nintendo’s Ver. 1.4.0 update notes do not name those ten additions or describe their individual counters. Because those details are not established in Nintendo’s published notes, use the general capture sequence rather than relying on an unverified type-specific tactic.
