For a personal Claude Free, Pro, or Max account, open Settings > Privacy on the web or desktop app to manage data export and shared-chat links. Other choices work differently: the Model Improvement setting governs eligible regular chats, Incognito chats are excluded from model improvement but retained temporarily, and deleting a conversation or account has separate consequences. Team and Enterprise users should also check their organization’s policies.
Which Claude privacy controls apply to your account?
The steps below cover personal Free, Pro, and Max accounts unless noted. Anthropic’s Help Center guidance available on October 9, 2026 describes separate controls for model improvement, temporary chats, saved conversations, shared links, exports, and account deletion. Those controls are not interchangeable: changing one does not automatically change the others.

Start by identifying what you want to happen. If you want an ordinary conversation not to be used for model improvement, review the Model Improvement setting. If you want a new chat to stay out of history and memory, start it in Incognito before sending a prompt. If you have already saved a conversation, use its Delete action. If you shared a chat, manage the link separately. Exporting is for making a copy of data, while account deletion is a permanent step that removes access to the account and its information.
Team and Enterprise accounts are organization-managed. The customer organization controls submitted data and may access or export it, so an individual user’s account settings may not answer questions about organizational access or retention. Ask your administrator how your organization’s policies apply.

The 30-day figures above are Anthropic Help Center policy statements, not independent measurements. For covered commercial models, separate guidance describes at least 30 days of prompt and completion retention by default, with safety-investigation and legal exceptions; Zero Data Retention is unavailable in specified covered-model contexts. That covered-model policy is model- and context-specific, and Anthropic says it does not change consumer Free, Pro, or Max use of Claude on web, desktop, mobile, or Claude Code.
For practical decisions, distinguish visibility from retention. A chat disappearing from the sidebar does not mean every related copy has been immediately removed from backend systems. Likewise, a chat that is absent from your history is not necessarily retained for zero days. Anthropic gives separate timelines for Incognito retention and backend deletion of a regular conversation.
Open Privacy settings and manage model improvement
In a personal Free, Pro, or Max account, the documented web and desktop route for privacy tools is initials in the lower-left corner > Settings > Privacy. Anthropic says consumers can adjust model-improvement privacy settings at any time. Its available guidance does not establish the precise current switch label or a reliable toggle-by-toggle path, so use the Privacy page’s current controls rather than relying on an older label or assumed platform-specific instructions.
Model Improvement is not the same as a promise that no conversation can ever be reviewed or used for safety purposes. Anthropic’s consumer guidance says Incognito conversations are excluded from model improvement even if the setting is enabled, but safety-classifier-flagged conversations may still be used to improve internal trust-and-safety models, detect harmful content, enforce policies, or advance safety research.
When you change the setting, keep in mind that it addresses model improvement for eligible consumer conversations; it does not delete chats, disable a shared link, or make the account anonymous. If those are your goals, use the corresponding conversation, sharing, or account controls as well. Anthropic says you can adjust the model-improvement privacy settings at any time, but the exact control wording may change as the interface changes.
If deciding whether to enter sensitive information, Anthropic recommends caution with financial data, health records, passwords, and confidential documents. A privacy setting does not make it prudent to submit information you do not need Claude to process. Consider whether the task can be completed with less sensitive details before sending a prompt.
Start an Incognito chat when you do not want a saved conversation
- Start a new chat outside a project. Incognito is not available inside projects.
- Select the ghost icon in the upper-right corner of the standard interface.
- Check that the interface displays the Incognito chat label before entering your prompt.
On the newer Claude experience, the Help Center says Incognito opens in the previous chat experience. In that experience Claude cannot create files or run code, so choose another chat mode if you need those capabilities. The ghost icon and interface labels described here may change, so confirm the Incognito label before sharing anything sensitive.

Incognito is a temporary-chat mode, not a deletion command or a zero-retention option. Anthropic’s Help Center states a 30-day default retention period, with longer retention possible under an Enterprise organization’s custom policy. After closing an Incognito chat, you cannot reopen it or turn it into an ordinary saved conversation.
Its practical distinction from a regular chat is therefore specific: Incognito chats are not saved to chat history or Claude memory and are not used to improve Claude, even when Model Improvement is enabled. The stated safety-classifier exception still applies. If your aim is to remove a chat you already saved, do not assume switching to Incognito later changes that earlier chat; delete the existing conversation separately.
Export your Claude data before making an irreversible change
- Use Claude on the web or in Claude Desktop; the iOS and Android apps cannot initiate an export.
- Click your initials in the lower-left corner, then choose Settings > Privacy.
- Select Export data.
- Watch for the download link sent by email. Download the export within 24 hours of delivery, when the link expires.
Anthropic says the export includes conversation data and account user information. If you are considering deleting your account, export first if you want to keep a copy. The export is a copy of data, not a way to restore an account or change the retention status of chats.
The 24-hour window begins when the email containing the download link is delivered. If the link expires before you download the file, use the current Privacy settings page to request an export again. Do not wait until after permanent account deletion to decide you need a copy. The documented export route is for individual Free, Pro, and Max accounts; workplace accounts may have organization-specific export processes, so ask an administrator about those.
Review or disable shared-chat links
Shared-chat links are managed separately from chat history and data export. In a personal Free, Pro, or Max account, open Settings > Privacy and use the Manage control for shared chats to review links and unshare a snapshot.
Anyone who has a public link can see its snapshot. Changing visibility to Private disables direct access. The Help Center says Team and Enterprise users can share only with members of the same organization. If you shared something sensitive, review the link settings rather than assuming that changing Model Improvement, deleting a different chat, or using Incognito has disabled it.
Think of a shared link as a separate access path to a snapshot, not as a synonym for the chat being saved in your private history. Review the links listed under Manage and unshare snapshots you no longer want accessible. If a link is no longer public, that does not itself delete the underlying conversation; use the conversation’s deletion control separately if that is what you want.

Delete an individual conversation
- On the web, locate the conversation in the left sidebar or under Chats and tasks.
- Open its three-dot menu, choose Delete, and confirm.
The Help Center also describes multi-select deletion and separate steps in the mobile apps, but the exact mobile sequence is not specified here. Deleting a conversation removes it from visible history immediately; Anthropic says backend deletion occurs within 30 days.
Conversation deletion is not the same as deleting all account data. Other associated information, including projects and account information, remains unless you delete it separately or delete the account. If you need an export, create it before removing data you may want to retain.
Deletion also differs from using Incognito. Incognito affects how a new chat is saved and used; deleting removes a saved conversation from visible history and starts the stated backend-deletion timeline. If you are trying to revoke access to a snapshot shared by link, check the shared-chat manager too rather than relying only on the chat deletion action.
Delete your Claude account
Account deletion is permanent: Anthropic says it removes access to conversations, projects, and account information, and the account cannot be recovered. Export data first if you need a copy.
- On the web, open the account menu and choose Settings, or go to Settings > Account.
- Select Delete account and follow the prompts.
- If you have a Pro or Max subscription, first cancel it in Billing settings and wait until the current subscription period ends before deleting the account.
Mobile account-deletion paths differ by platform; follow Anthropic’s current guide for the device you use rather than assuming that the web menu is identical in the iOS and Android apps.

What Team and Enterprise users should check
For Claude for Work, Anthropic describes the customer as the controller of submitted user data and Anthropic as the processor. Anthropic says it processes the data on the customer’s instructions to provide Claude. In practical terms, your organization—not an individual consumer privacy setting—sets the applicable rules for submitted work data and may access or export user data.

Anthropic says commercial product data is not used to train its models unless the customer chooses to participate in the Development Partner Program. Ask your administrator about who can access your conversations, the organization’s retention policy, and whether it has chosen to participate. Do not assume the consumer account’s Incognito, export, or deletion behavior fully describes organization-managed data.
For organization-managed accounts, useful questions include whether administrators can access or export user data, what retention policy applies, and whether the organization participates in the Development Partner Program. The answer may depend on the customer’s configuration and policy. Anthropic’s commercial guidance states: “Anthropic only processes the data as instructed by the customer in order to provide the Claude service.” Your administrator is the appropriate contact for how those instructions and organizational policies apply to your account.

This is not a blanket rule for every Claude conversation. Anthropic says the change does not affect consumer Free, Pro, and Max use on web, desktop, mobile, or Claude Code, which follows consumer practices.

- Keep a conversation out of history and memory: use Incognito before sending the prompt; it still has a stated retention period.
- Remove one saved chat from your account: use that conversation’s Delete action, then allow for the stated backend deletion timeline.
- Keep a copy of your data: request an export on web or desktop and download the emailed link before it expires.
- Stop access through a shared link: review the shared-chat manager and unshare the snapshot or change its visibility to Private.
- Remove your account: export first if needed; Pro and Max subscribers must cancel and wait until the current subscription period ends.
- Understand workplace data handling: ask your Team or Enterprise administrator, because organization policies govern access and retention.
A useful order of operations is to identify what you want to preserve, export if you need a copy, and then take the narrowest action that meets your goal. Use link management to change link access, conversation deletion to remove a saved chat, and account deletion only if you intend to permanently lose access to the account and its information.

Where are Claude’s Privacy settings?

How do I export my Claude data, and how long is the link valid?

Claude’s controls solve different problems: review Model Improvement for eligible regular chats, choose Incognito before sending a chat you do not want in history or memory, manage shared links separately, and use export before deleting data you may want to keep. Incognito and deleted conversations still have stated retention timelines; account deletion is permanent. For Team and Enterprise accounts, ask the organization’s administrator how its policies apply.
