“Sonic the Hedgehog 3” refers to two different soundtracks: the music in the 1994 game and the score album for the 2024 motion picture. They are unrelated releases. Start by deciding which one you mean, then compare editions within that category rather than treating every Sonic 3 recording as one soundtrack.
For the game, the useful checkpoints are the original Genesis/Mega Drive release, the Windows Sonic & Knuckles Collection presentation, and Sonic Origins. For the film, use Paramount Music’s separately listed Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Music from the Motion Picture). The procedures below show how to identify the edition you have, check what music it presents, and avoid claiming track-level differences that have not been verified.

First decide whether you mean the game or the movie
The 1994 game
The game soundtrack is interactive music heard during gameplay, menus, special stages and other in-game situations. Different releases can alter the audio presentation, and some releases package the game with its linked sequel content. A comparison therefore needs both an edition name and a platform.

Game editions worth comparing
These three checkpoints give you a practical historical range. The table distinguishes what is established about each presentation from what still requires listening to the particular copy you own.
| Edition or presentation | Platform context | Game scope | Music comparison value | Best choice for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original Sonic the Hedgehog 3 | Genesis/Mega Drive cartridge release | The standalone game as originally issued | Baseline for the original Genesis sound presentation | Hearing the historical release music as it was delivered on the console |
| Sonic & Knuckles Collection | Windows PC compilation | Use the collection’s own menu and documentation to confirm which Sonic titles are installed in your copy | A later PC presentation; the available evidence here does not establish a complete track-by-track map against Genesis | Comparing the Windows-era interpretation with console hardware |
| Sonic Origins | Modern collection on supported platforms | Includes Sonic 3 & Knuckles; SEGA’s manual explains that Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles were originally separate titles but are combined in the collection | Not all original Genesis sounds are retained; music was adapted for the collection | Playing the combined game in a current collection |
The table does not imply that every cue changes between every release. It identifies where a comparison is meaningful and where you must listen to the edition itself.
What is known about the game music differences
Genesis/Mega Drive is the historical reference point
If your question is “What did the original game sound like?”, use a genuine Genesis or Mega Drive release as the reference. Record the region and hardware setup, because a comparison is only useful when you can identify exactly what produced the sound. A cartridge played on original hardware is a different reference from a later collection, even when both display the same game title.

The Windows Sonic & Knuckles Collection should be treated as its own listening target, not as a guaranteed digital duplicate of the cartridge. Keep the compilation name, operating system and release package in your notes. The evidence available for this comparison does not provide a definitive list of every cue that differs from Genesis, so describe a difference only after checking the relevant passage yourself.
Sonic Origins adapts the music
SEGA’s public explanation, reported by VGC, says that Sonic Origins could not use all of the original sounds from the Genesis version. VGC quoted SEGA social media manager Katie Chrzanowski: “Jun Senoue has been working really hard to adapt the original music that was composed in 1993 for Sonic Origins.” This supports an edition-level conclusion: Origins presents adapted music rather than preserving every Genesis sound unchanged. It does not, by itself, prove that every track is different or establish why a particular cue sounds different.
Combined game content changes the comparison
Sonic Origins includes Sonic 3 & Knuckles, while the original releases treated Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles as separate titles. When you compare a soundtrack, note whether you are listening to Sonic 3 alone or to the combined progression. A playlist or recording that moves into Sonic & Knuckles material is not evidence that the original Sonic 3 cartridge contained the same sequence.
Step-by-step: compare the game editions without overclaiming
- Identify the exact edition. Write down “Genesis/Mega Drive,” “Windows Sonic & Knuckles Collection,” or “Sonic Origins,” along with the platform. If you are using a re-release, record its product name exactly as shown on the title screen or store library.
- Confirm the game scope. Check whether the menu launches Sonic 3 by itself, combines it with Sonic & Knuckles, or offers multiple modes. In Origins, the combined Sonic 3 & Knuckles scope is part of the collection’s documented design.
- Choose repeatable listening conditions. Use the same headphones or speakers, volume level and playback point for each edition. If one version is emulated or captured as video, label that method rather than presenting it as an original-hardware test.
- Use the same in-game cue as your anchor. Start from an identifiable menu, level or event and note the exact point where you began listening. Do not compare a cue from one edition with a different cue from another merely because both appear in a similar part of the game.
- Record what you actually hear. Describe instrumentation, melody, rhythm, sound effects masking the music, looping behavior and whether the cue ends at the same gameplay event. Use “appears different in this passage” when you have not checked the complete track.
- Separate observation from documentation. Label a statement as documented when it comes from SEGA’s explanation or its manual. Label a statement as an observation when you listened to the passage yourself. Do not turn one observed difference into a claim that the entire soundtrack was replaced.
- Repeat at least once. Replay the same section after restarting the game or loading a second save. A transition, timing difference or sound-effect overlay can make two otherwise similar passages seem different.
A comparison worksheet
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Edition | Exact title shown by the game or collection |
| Platform | Genesis, Mega Drive, Windows PC or the platform running Sonic Origins |
| Game scope | Sonic 3 alone, Sonic & Knuckles alone, or combined Sonic 3 & Knuckles |
| Playback point | Menu, level, event or other identifiable cue |
| Observed difference | Specific audible change, with the time or gameplay location |
| Confidence | Repeated listening, single listening, or documented edition-level information |
How to verify a suspected track difference
A reliable comparison has a narrow claim. “This Origins passage uses a different arrangement from the Genesis passage” is defensible if you listened to both passages. “Every Origins track is different” is not established by the edition-level statement about adapted music.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Capture the same start and end points in both editions.
- Check the loop boundary; a different loop length can sound like a new arrangement.
- Listen for the melody first, then percussion, bass and timbral changes.
- Keep game sound effects separate from music when possible.
- Write down the edition before describing the result in a forum, video or article.
- Use “not checked” for cues you did not compare rather than filling the gap with a generalization.
This method is especially important for the Windows compilation, for which the material available for this comparison does not supply a complete track matrix. It is also the safest way to discuss Sonic Origins: the adapted presentation is documented, while the exact list of changed cues must be established by listening to each one.
Make the comparison reproducible
Two listeners can report different results if they use different hardware, game modes or starting points. Make your notes detailed enough that another person can repeat the test. Record the title-screen wording, the operating system or console, whether the copy is physical or digital, and the date you listened. For the Genesis/Mega Drive reference, note the region and whether the cartridge was played on original hardware. For the Windows compilation, record the complete compilation name rather than simply writing “PC version.” For Sonic Origins, identify the platform running the collection and whether you entered the combined Sonic 3 & Knuckles mode.
Use a short, fixed listening set instead of trying to judge an entire game in one sitting. Pick a menu cue, one early level passage, a later level passage and a transition. Replay each selection in the same order, with the same volume and headphones or speakers. If you capture audio or video, preserve the unedited file and note whether the capture includes sound effects. A visual gameplay upload is useful for locating a cue, but its compression and mixing may conceal a small timbral change.
Do not use a soundtrack playlist with unknown provenance as a reference. A playlist may combine recordings from several editions, omit loops or use fan-made edits. Its title alone cannot establish which game build produced the audio. Link your observation to a named edition and a specific gameplay location.
Distinguish a documented fact from an audible judgment
There are two kinds of statements in a careful version guide. Documentation establishes that Sonic Origins combines Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, and that SEGA said Jun Senoue adapted music because the collection could not use all the original Genesis sounds. Listening establishes whether a particular passage has a changed melody, patch, rhythm, mix or loop. Keep those categories separate in captions, reviews and videos.
Use precise wording: “SEGA’s statement describes adapted music,” “I heard a different percussion pattern in this passage,” or “the Windows cue was not checked against the cartridge.” Avoid stronger wording such as “the complete soundtrack was replaced” unless you have evidence for every cue. The available edition-level information does not provide a definitive track-by-track matrix for the Windows collection or Sonic Origins, so a complete list requires your own systematic listening.
The film score album is a different product
Paramount Music lists Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Music from the Motion Picture) as a soundtrack album with music by Tom Holkenborg. The listing contains 33 tracks and gives a total running time of 1:02:46. Apple Music dates the album’s release to December 20, 2024 and credits the rights to Paramount Pictures under exclusive license to Milan Records, a label of Sony Music Entertainment.

| Album detail | Published information | How to use it in a comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Title | Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Music from the Motion Picture) | Use this title to distinguish the film score from game editions |
| Composer | Tom Holkenborg | Identifies the film-score creator, not the composer of the game’s original music |
| Track count | 33 tracks | Album metadata from Paramount Music’s listing |
| Total duration | 1:02:46 | Album metadata from Paramount Music’s listing |
| Release date | December 20, 2024 | Date shown by Apple Music |
| Listening destinations | Apple Music, Amazon Music and Qobuz are linked from Paramount Music’s page | Check the service in your territory because catalog availability can change |
Step-by-step: find the official movie album
- Search the complete album title. Include “Music from the Motion Picture” so results for the game do not crowd out the film release.
- Check the composer. Confirm that the listing names Tom Holkenborg. This is a quick way to reject an incorrectly labeled game playlist.
- Verify the album metadata. The official Paramount Music listing should show 33 tracks and the 1:02:46 total time. Apple Music provides the December 20, 2024 release date.
- Choose a service available to you. Paramount Music links to Apple Music, Amazon Music and Qobuz, but a link or catalog entry does not guarantee access in every country.
- Save the edition information. Record the service, territory and date you checked. Streaming catalogs can change, so this note matters if you revisit the comparison later.
What to check before buying or subscribing
The best option depends on whether you want to play the game or listen to a linear album. A copy of Sonic Origins Plus is a game collection, not a soundtrack release; it can provide access to the collection’s Sonic 3 & Knuckles presentation, but it does not promise a separate album of extracted music. Confirm the platform, region and physical-versus-digital format before ordering.
No stable price comparison is available for these products because retailer listings, territories and editions change. Treat the displayed price as a transaction detail, not as evidence that one soundtrack version is more authoritative. For the movie, the official Paramount page points to Apple Music, Amazon Music and Qobuz; access, subscription requirements and catalog presence can differ by country. Check the destination immediately before paying or subscribing.
Do not assume a marketplace listing proves that an authorized physical pressing exists. Current listings do not establish a consistently available official physical release for either the game music or the film score. Verify the seller, format, licensing information and product identity before treating a disc or cartridge listing as an official soundtrack edition.
Game music or film score: use the right comparison question
| If you want to know… | Compare… | Do not use… |
|---|---|---|
| How the original 1994 game sounded | Genesis/Mega Drive against later game presentations | The 2024 film album |
| Whether a current game collection preserves the old sound | Genesis/Mega Drive against Sonic Origins, using matched gameplay cues | Album track counts or film-score listings |
| How the Windows release presents the music | The Windows Sonic & Knuckles Collection against a clearly identified console reference | An unspecified PC video or playlist |
| What music was written for the movie | The Paramount Music album and its official service listings | In-game recordings labeled “Sonic 3” without a film-album title |
Availability and physical-copy cautions
Digital access is easier to verify than physical inventory. Paramount Music’s page identifies listening services, but service catalogs are regional and can change. Check the album page in your country immediately before buying or subscribing.
Sonic Origins Plus is a game collection that can let you hear the Sonic 3 & Knuckles presentation; it is not a soundtrack album. Before purchasing, confirm the platform, region and whether the listing is physical or digital. Current evidence does not establish a consistently available authorized physical pressing of either the game music or the film score, so do not treat a retailer listing as proof of an official release without checking the seller and product details.

Mixing the game and movie because they share a title
Symptom: A playlist combines game stage music with Tom Holkenborg’s film cues. Fix: Split your notes into “1994 game” and “2024 film,” then verify the exact album or edition name.
Calling every Origins cue a replacement
Symptom: An edition-level statement is expanded into a track-by-track claim. Fix: Say that Origins uses adapted music and identify only the passages you personally checked.

Ignoring combined-game scope
Symptom: Sonic & Knuckles material is attributed to a standalone Sonic 3 release. Fix: Record whether the software presents Sonic 3 alone or the combined Sonic 3 & Knuckles experience.
Treating streaming availability as permanent
Symptom: A service link works for one reader but not another. Fix: State the service and territory you checked, and avoid promising availability outside that context.
Using a vague “PC version” label
Symptom: A comparison cannot be reproduced because the Windows package is unnamed. Fix: Write the full compilation title and operating system, then identify the exact cue and playback point.
Comparing unlike listening formats
Symptom: A compressed gameplay video is compared with a direct console capture and the difference is called a new arrangement. Fix: Match the capture method where possible, or disclose the format and treat subtle differences cautiously.
Assuming a release date is a version number
Symptom: The film album’s December 20, 2024 date is used to identify a game build. Fix: Keep album metadata separate from game-edition details; the date identifies the Apple Music album listing, not a Genesis, Windows or Origins revision.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s soundtrack from the game or the movie?
It can mean either. The 1994 game has interactive music, while the 2024 movie has a separate score album. Identify the year and use the complete film album title when you mean the movie.
Recommended Free Tools
Which game versions should I compare?
Use the original Genesis/Mega Drive release, the Windows Sonic & Knuckles Collection, and Sonic Origins as the main comparison points.
Best Value
Does Sonic Origins contain the original Genesis music?
Not unchanged in every respect. SEGA, as reported by VGC, said the collection could not use all the original Genesis sounds and that Jun Senoue adapted music for Sonic Origins. That does not prove that every cue differs.
Does Sonic Origins include Sonic & Knuckles?
Yes. SEGA’s manual describes Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles as originally separate titles that are included together as Sonic 3 & Knuckles in the collection.
How many tracks are on the Sonic 3 movie score?
Paramount Music lists 33 tracks with a total running time of 1:02:46. Apple Music dates that album to December 20, 2024.

Who composed the film score?
Tom Holkenborg is credited with the music on Paramount Music’s listing for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Music from the Motion Picture).
Where can I listen to the movie album?
Paramount Music links to Apple Music, Amazon Music and Qobuz. Availability, subscription requirements and catalog listings can vary by territory.
Is Sonic Origins Plus a soundtrack album?
No. It is a game collection that can let you hear the Sonic 3 & Knuckles presentation. Confirm the platform, region and physical or digital format before buying.
Can I claim that every track changes between editions?
No. The documented information supports edition-level differences, especially adapted music in Sonic Origins, but not a complete track-by-track matrix. Check and document each cue before making that claim.
Is an online physical soundtrack listing automatically official?
No. Inventory and authorization were not established consistently. Verify the seller, format, region and product details instead of treating a marketplace listing as proof of an authorized pressing.
The Bottom Line
Separate the 1994 game from the 2024 film first. For the game, identify Genesis/Mega Drive, the Windows Sonic & Knuckles Collection or Sonic Origins, record whether Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles are combined, and compare matched gameplay cues. Sonic Origins uses adapted music, but only a cue-by-cue listen supports a specific track claim. For the movie, use Paramount Music’s 33-track, 1:02:46 Tom Holkenborg album, dated December 20, 2024 on Apple Music, and recheck regional service availability before purchasing.
