How to Find and Compare Steam Game Prices Before You Buy

Compare a Steam game’s local price with its history and current PC-store offers. Match editions, regions and refund terms before deciding whether to buy or wait.

To judge a Steam game deal, compare the price in your own Steam store region with the game’s price history, then check current offers for the same edition at other PC stores. A sale percentage or record-low label alone does not tell you whether an offer is right for you: match the product, currency, platform, seller and refund terms before buying.

How to check a Steam game’s current price and history

  1. Find the exact product. Search the Steam store and confirm whether you want the base game, a deluxe edition, a bundle or DLC. Record the price only after checking that the store page matches the product you intend to buy.
  2. Note the offer in your own store region. Record the displayed price and currency, the discount and, if shown, when the offer ends. Steam does not have one universal price: Valve says developers set the prices they submit for 37 currencies and four region groups. Its regional-pricing explorer describes different currency-conversion approaches and says the public data used for those methods is as of January 2026.
  3. Look up the same game on SteamDB. Search by title, verify the result, then open its price-history chart and table. Compare today’s price with previous lows and note how often the game has been discounted. SteamDB says its historical-price data covers 41 currencies and goes back to 2012; those are claims about SteamDB’s dataset, not Valve’s records.
  4. Compare live offers at other stores. Search for the game on IsThereAnyDeal, which lists current offers attributed to Steam and other PC game stores. Check the retailer’s checkout page before deciding: listings and final terms can change.

SteamDB says price changes are recorded in real time as Steam updates prices, but its history is third-party data, not an official Valve price-history guarantee. Its regional-pricing tool says it queries Steam’s official storefront API daily for seven regions; that collection detail should not be taken to mean every region or tool updates on the same schedule.

How to tell whether a sale is a good deal

Compare the actual purchase, not just the discount badge. A 50% discount can still be poor value if the price remains well above earlier offers, while a smaller discount may bring a game close to its prior low. SteamDB’s chart provides context for that judgment, but a past low records an earlier price—it does not predict when or whether a similar sale will return. SteamDB explicitly says it cannot know future prices or discounts.

What to compare What to check Why it matters
Product Exact title, edition, bundle contents and DLC A cheaper bundle, add-on or different edition is not a like-for-like offer.
Local total Price in the currency and region that apply to you Steam’s regional prices are set by developers and vary across currencies and region groups. See Valve’s pricing information.
Price history Current price against previous lows and the game’s discount pattern It helps put a sale in context, but cannot forecast the next one. See SteamDB’s price-history page.
Store and platform Seller, launcher or platform, and region activation Third-party listings may involve a different storefront or activation experience. Confirm the offer with the retailer at IsThereAnyDeal.
Refund route Which store handles the purchase and what its policy allows Refund terms depend on where you buy and may differ by product and eligibility. Valve says it cannot refund purchases made outside Steam. See Steam’s refund policy.

How to compare Steam with other PC stores

Before choosing an outside offer, verify that it is for the same game and edition, works with the platform or launcher you want, and can be activated in your region. Then compare the final local-currency total—not just the headline price—with Steam’s offer. Check the retailer’s own checkout terms and refund policy as well. A lower listed price is not automatically the better purchase if the product, activation region or protection differs.

What a Steam refund covers—and what it does not

Valve’s general refund offer for games covers requests made within 14 days of purchase when the game has been played for less than two hours, subject to the detailed policy and its exceptions. Valve cannot refund purchases made outside Steam, including third-party CD keys or Steam Wallet cards. If buying through another store, check that seller’s refund process rather than assuming Steam will handle it. See Steam Refunds for the policy, last updated April 23, 2024.

How to decide whether to buy now or wait

If the current local price is acceptable compared with the game’s past offers and you want to play now, buying can make sense. If you would rather wait, add the game to Steam’s wishlist or use SteamDB’s watchlist, then check again when you are ready. Those tools can help you notice an offer; they cannot guarantee the next sale price or date.

SteamDB also offers an optional browser extension for Chrome, Firefox and Edge that can display recorded lowest prices on Steam product pages. It is a convenience, not a requirement: you can look up the history directly on SteamDB’s extension page or its price-history site.

Compare the price available to you—not another region’s

Use the currency and region that apply to your own Steam account. Regional prices are set for Steam’s storefront by developers, and comparing another region’s price does not establish that it is available to you under Steam’s rules. Valve’s 2023 notice about Argentina and Turkey said pricing there began using USD on November 20, 2023, alongside new regional pricing groups. For a specific question about regional purchasing eligibility, check Steam’s current rules directly.
