Look for bears in the Black Forest, where they can roam across the biome; a Bear Cave is a more specific landmark if you want a predictable search target. In a fight, use fire to influence a bear’s movement, stay out of its forward attack arcs, and clear the slam’s area. The stats and behavior below come from community-maintained game references, not official developer testing, and may change with patches.
Where to find bears
Bears are associated with the Black Forest. The Valheim – EN community reference describes them as rare, roaming spawns that can appear anywhere in the biome, with a local limit of one; it says daytime spawns are capped at one star. The ESO-UI Valheim reference likewise places bears across the Black Forest and says only one roams a given area.

Roaming bear or Bear Cave?

A Valheim Wiki/ValheimHub location page marked “Verified 1.0” reports 50 Bear Cave placement attempts per world, subject to terrain checks, and a minimum 256 m separation between similar placements. Its sample of 600 worlds found the nearest cave 505 m from spawn, a typical distance of 868 m, and nine worlds in ten with a cave within 1,173 m, measured straight-line. These are sampled-world figures, not guarantees for a particular seed. The page says placement follows the Black Forest “Median” rule, requires altitude above 5 m, and reserves a 12 m exclusion radius. Know the bear’s strength and attacks
Community references list 800 health for a zero-star bear. The ESO-UI page gives 1,600 health and 150% damage for one star, and 2,400 health and 200% damage for two stars. Treat these as community reference values rather than independently confirmed current-build stats.

The attack figures and timings are reported by the Valheim – EN bear reference. The ESO-UI page summarizes several attacks as occurring on roughly a four-second cycle; the Gamecore reference distinguishes the slam with a 12-second cooldown. Attack-specific timings above follow the more detailed listing.
How to fight a bear
Use fire and manage your distance
Both bear references say bears avoid fire and may flee when close to a fire source. The reported threshold is about 3 m. Fire can influence movement, but it does not make the bear harmless: it may still attack outside the fire’s range, and its attacks can miss as it changes direction. The Gamecore page advises facing the bear when using a torch because the fire radius is calculated from the fire itself.
The ESO-UI bear page lists fire as a weakness, blunt, pierce, and frost as resistant damage types, and spirit as ineffective. The general damage reference defines weak, resistant, and immune tiers as 150%, 50%, and 0% damage respectively. This supports favoring fire over the listed resisted types; it is not a tested ranking of particular weapons. See the bear’s damage and behavior listing and the general damage reference.
Read the attack, not just the bear’s position
- Move clear of the forward arc when the bear bites, rears for a claw strike, or begins a swipe; those attacks are described with forward reach.
- When it begins the stationary slam, get outside the listed 2.5 m radius rather than trying to evade with a small sidestep.
- Fire is a movement-control tool, not a guarantee of safety. The sources do not establish a particular shield tier or guarantee that blocking or parrying will work.
Plan for a retreat
The Gamecore bear page says bears regenerate health faster than most creatures and gives 50 minutes as the time for full recovery. That exact interval is source-dependent and may be version-sensitive. If you leave the encounter and return much later, expect that the bear may have recovered substantially.

The community references list bear hide, bear meat, bear paw, and bear trophy. Their reported base quantities and star scaling are:

Are bears tameable?
No. The bear references say bears are not tameable; using fire to influence one’s movement does not turn it into a tamed creature.
