Find Staryu in Wild Zone 2 at night, then use a Water Stone to evolve it into Starmie. You can buy a Water Stone at the Stone Emporium in southern Lumiose City, south of Vernal Pokémon Center. If you would rather catch the evolved Pokémon, Starmie is listed in Wild Zone 16 at night.
Where to find Staryu
Wild Zone 2 at night
The clearest route is to search the water in Wild Zone 2 at night. Nintendo Life and Gamer Guides both list this nighttime location for Staryu: Nintendo Life’s Wild Zone locations and Gamer Guides’ Staryu location guide.
Wild Zone 10 as another option
Nintendo Life also lists Staryu in Wild Zone 10, but its location table does not state a time of day for that area. Treat it as an additional place to check, not as a confirmed all-day encounter.
How to make it night
If it is not night when you arrive, Thonky says you can use a bench to advance the time; benches outside Pokémon Centers are one example. See Thonky’s Staryu guide for its location and time details.

How to evolve Staryu into Starmie
- Get a Water Stone. Thonky says the Stone Emporium in southern Lumiose City sells them. The shop is south of Vernal Pokémon Center.
- Use the Water Stone on Staryu. Staryu evolves into Starmie when the stone is used.
The official Pokémon Legends: Z-A gameplay page describes the Stone Emporium as a shop that carries evolution stones and related items; the specific Water Stone location is given by Thonky.
Can you catch Starmie instead?
Yes. Nintendo Life lists wild Starmie in Wild Zone 16 at night. This is an alternative if you prefer to look for Starmie directly rather than catch Staryu and evolve it.

- Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.
- As you catch, train, and battle Pokémon, there will be plenty of people to meet too—like AZ, the enigmatic owner of Hotel Z.
Approaching Pokémon to catch them
The official game page gives general stealth advice: “Some Pokémon will flee immediately if they spot you, so hide out of sight or approach from behind to make yourself harder to notice.” The statement is general and does not single out Staryu, but it is useful when approaching Pokémon that might run.
