Record the exact moment of an audio pop, game stutter, or input hitch with Windows Performance Recorder (WPR), inspect that interval in Windows Performance Analyzer (WPA), map the active module to its device or driver, then make one reversible change and record the same workload again. This process shows whether DPC/ISR activity is actually involved and prevents you from replacing hardware that was never the cause.
What high DPC latency means
Windows devices signal work with hardware interrupts. A driver services the interrupt in an interrupt service routine (ISR), then commonly queues a deferred procedure call (DPC) for follow-up work. A DPC runs in a DPC context at IRQL DISPATCH_LEVEL, while the ISR runs at the device’s interrupt level. Microsoft advises that an ISR should return control to the system as soon as possible for overall system and driver performance. See Microsoft’s introduction to DPCs and its DpcForIsr guidance.

DPCs and ISRs execute at elevated priority. If they consume too much processor time, ordinary threads can be delayed. Microsoft’s CPU Analysis documentation notes that excessive DPC/ISR time can leave insufficient CPU time for threads, affecting time-sensitive work such as video playback or animation. In a game, that delay can appear as a brief frame-time hitch, a crackle or pop in audio, delayed input, or a short stall. The symptom alone does not prove DPC latency: the relevant DPC/ISR activity must overlap the event you noticed.

Do not use 100 and 25 microseconds as universal failure limits
Microsoft’s driver-testing example recommends that a DPC should not run longer than 100 microseconds and an ISR should not run longer than 25 microseconds. Those numbers are engineering guidance for driver testing, documented in Example 15: Measuring DPC/ISR Time; they are not consumer guarantees or a one-reading diagnosis.
| Activity | Microsoft testing guidance | How to interpret it on a PC |
|---|---|---|
| DPC execution time | Should not run longer than 100 microseconds | A brief value above this is a clue to investigate, not proof that it caused your glitch. |
| ISR execution time | Should not run longer than 25 microseconds | Consider duration, repetition, workload, and overlap with the observed symptom. |
Frequency and context matter. A short event that occurs while the system is idle may be harmless, while a smaller but repeated burst during audio playback can be disruptive. Compare the timing, duration, and CPU share of the activity with the exact second in which the problem occurred. Avoid comparing a maximum value from one workload with a maximum from a different workload as though they were equivalent.
Define a reproducible symptom before collecting data
A trace is useful only when you can relate it to an event of interest. Write down what you experience, the application or game in use, and the action that tends to trigger it.
- Describe the failure: for example, one audible pop, a sequence of crackles, a half-second stutter, a frozen animation, or delayed controller input.
- Record the workload: note the game scene, audio application, video stream, capture session, or other activity running at the time.
- Record timing: use the clock to note when the event starts and ends. Include whether it happens once, in bursts, or at regular intervals.
- Keep the test repeatable: use the same level, media file, benchmark section, or in-game action for each recording.
Do not begin by changing drivers or BIOS settings. First obtain one trace that contains the failure and, if possible, an unaffected interval under the same workload. The comparison gives you a baseline and helps separate normal background activity from the event that matters.
Install Windows Performance Recorder and Analyzer
Windows Performance Recorder and Windows Performance Analyzer are components of the Windows Performance Toolkit. Microsoft distributes that toolkit through the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK). The supported ADK release and operating-system list change over time, so use Microsoft’s current installation page rather than relying on an old version number.

WPR captures Event Tracing for Windows (ETW) events into an ETL file. WPA opens that file and provides graphs and pivotable tables for examining CPU, DPC, and ISR activity. The Windows Performance Toolkit overview explains the package, while the WPA documentation covers trace analysis.
- Install the toolkit on the Windows installation where the problem occurs.
- Ensure you have enough free storage for an ETL trace and permission to start a performance recording.
- Close unrelated applications that could make the reproduction inconsistent, but leave the software that normally triggers the fault running.
Capture the glitch with WPR
Use a general or basic system recording that includes DPC and Interrupt system keywords. Microsoft’s Recording for Basic System Diagnosis describes this workflow.
- Open WPR. Start Windows Performance Recorder from the Windows Performance Toolkit.
- Select the general/basic system profile. Confirm that the profile includes the DPC and Interrupt system keywords; the WPR General Profile includes them.
- Start recording immediately before the test. Begin with the system in the same state you use when the problem normally appears.
- Reproduce the symptom once or twice. Perform the documented action and wait only long enough to capture the event. Avoid creating unrelated load after the glitch.
- Stop soon after reproduction. Save the ETL file with a descriptive name that includes the date and workload. Keep the original file unchanged.
- Write down the event time. Record the start and end time of each glitch relative to the trace so you can zoom to that interval in WPA.
A long recording filled with unrelated activity is harder to interpret. If the problem is intermittent, make several short traces rather than one recording that covers hours of normal operation. Preserve a trace in which the symptom is definitely present; an idle trace cannot establish causality.
Inspect DPC and ISR activity in WPA
- Open the ETL in WPA. Load the file and wait for WPA to process the event data.
- Locate CPU and DPC/ISR views. Use the graphs and tables for DPC and ISR execution, CPU usage, and the modules handling that work. WPA tables can be pivoted so you can examine time, process, module, count, and duration from different angles.
- Zoom to the symptom interval. Select the time range surrounding the recorded glitch, then inspect a nearby unaffected interval from the same trace when available.
- Check duration and repetition. Look for long individual calls, repeated bursts, or a sustained increase in DPC/ISR CPU time. Note whether the pattern begins before, during, or after the user-visible event.
- Identify the module. Record the driver or module associated with the activity, then follow its device association. A module name is a lead, not proof that the physical device or driver is the root cause.
Microsoft’s CPU Analysis guidance recommends focusing on events of interest and understanding which component is involved. Do not diagnose from a “top driver” list that is detached from the symptom’s timestamp. A module can have the largest count or total time and still be unrelated to the click or stall if its work occurred outside that interval.
Use the trace to decide what the evidence means
| What you see in the symptom interval | What it supports | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| A DPC/ISR burst starts or peaks at the same time as the glitch and is absent or lower in the unaffected interval. | DPC/ISR activity is a plausible contributor. | Map the responsible module to its device or driver and test one targeted change. |
| A module has a high total count but little activity when the glitch occurs. | The module may be busy normally without causing this event. | Do not change it solely because it tops a sorted list; capture another reproduction if necessary. |
| No DPC/ISR increase overlaps the symptom, while another CPU or application event does. | The problem may not be DPC latency. | Investigate the event that does overlap the symptom instead of forcing a DPC explanation. |
| One ISR is short but occurs frequently during the workload. | Repetition may matter even when each call is below the testing guidance. | Compare its frequency and CPU share with the unaffected interval and identify the associated device. |
| DPCs are long or repeated but the trace contains no user-visible glitch. | The activity may be workload-dependent or benign in that scenario. | Repeat the recording under the workload that actually produces the failure. |
This is correlation, not a promise that every overlapping event is causal. A reliable diagnosis requires the same pattern to recur when the symptom recurs and to change when the implicated component is changed.

Map a module to a device before changing anything
Driver names are often less informative than the hardware function they serve. Follow the module from WPA to the corresponding driver package and device in Windows. Confirm that the device is active during the workload and that its timing matches the event. If the trace identifies only a shared system component, collect another trace with a narrower reproduction and compare the module’s activity across affected and unaffected intervals.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchDo not infer a failing network adapter, audio interface, graphics device, motherboard, or storage controller from the article title or from a single maximum value. The correct component depends on the ETL evidence and the hardware in the individual system. Microsoft’s manual CPU-analysis guidance supports component-level investigation rather than a universal replacement part.
Apply one targeted, reversible fix
Once the trace ties the symptom to a specific device, driver, or configuration, change only that variable. Record the current driver version and settings first so you can undo the test.
| Candidate change | When it is justified | Risk and control |
|---|---|---|
| Update or roll back the implicated driver | The trace links the device’s module to the symptom and a suitable driver version is available from the device or system manufacturer. | Keep the previous installer or restore path; test one driver change at a time. |
| Change a component-specific configuration | The trace and reproduction implicate a device whose documented settings can be changed without altering the rest of the system. | Write down the original value and change only one setting for the next trace. |
| Temporarily disconnect or replace the implicated component | The evidence consistently follows that component and a controlled substitution is practical. | Use a reversible test and preserve the original hardware until the result is confirmed. |
Microsoft’s performance guidance describes component-level changes or a related driver upgrade after the implicated component has been identified. It does not support a universal driver, BIOS option, power plan, or replacement device for every high-latency report. A broad change made before identification can hide the cause and create new variables.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Validate the change with the same measurement
- Recreate the original workload and trigger the same action that produced the glitch.
- Record another ETL with the same WPR profile and timing.
- Compare the affected interval before and after the change: symptom frequency, DPC/ISR duration, repetition, CPU share, and the implicated module’s activity.
- Keep the change only when the user-visible problem improves and the trace evidence moves in the expected direction.
- If nothing changes, restore the original setting or driver and test the next evidence-based hypothesis.
Do not compare an idle run after the change with a heavily loaded run before it. The workload, reproduction steps, recording profile, and time window should be as similar as possible. A change that lowers a peak but leaves the glitch untouched has not solved the reader’s problem.

Common mistakes that waste time
- Treating 100 µs and 25 µs as hard consumer thresholds. They are driver-testing recommendations. Use them as investigation prompts and interpret them with timing and workload.
- Blaming the top-listed module. Sort order alone does not establish causality. Require overlap with the symptom and a device/driver association.
- Changing several things at once. Simultaneous driver updates, BIOS changes, power-plan edits, and hardware swaps make it impossible to know which change mattered.
- Buying generic replacement hardware. A title about DPC latency cannot identify a faulty adapter or motherboard. Hardware replacement is justified only after repeatable trace evidence points to that component.
- Reinstalling Windows as a first step. A clean installation may remove variables, but trace-based identification and a related component or driver change are the evidence-led first steps described by Microsoft.
- Applying broad power-management tweaks by default. Unless the trace and device documentation implicate a specific setting, a global change can alter performance without addressing the event.
- Recording without the failure. A technically clean trace from an unaffected interval cannot explain a glitch that never occurred in it.
When the trace does not identify a clear cause
The symptom is too intermittent
Use the same trigger and make several short recordings. Note which files contain a confirmed glitch. Compare only intervals with the same workload; a long idle section does not substitute for a failed reproduction.
DPC/ISR activity does not overlap the event
Stop pursuing DPC latency as the sole explanation. WPA may show another CPU, application, storage, or scheduling event at the same timestamp. The absence of overlapping DPC/ISR activity is useful evidence that the original hypothesis needs revision.
A module is visible but cannot be mapped confidently
Capture again with a narrower workload and preserve the ETL. Follow the module’s driver and device association before making a change. If the association remains ambiguous, do not guess a replacement part from the module name alone.
The targeted change improves the symptom but not the trace
Repeat the measurement under identical conditions. If the trace pattern and user-visible result do not move together, the improvement may be coincidental or caused by a different variable. Restore the change and test the next component supported by the timing evidence.
The trace shows a change but the symptom remains
A lower DPC/ISR value is not the goal by itself. Keep investigating the event that still overlaps the glitch, and do not declare success until the workload is stable and the actual click, pop, or stutter is gone.
A practical workflow for gaming and audio systems
For a game-related hitch, reproduce the same scene, frame-rate cap, audio output, and background capture conditions used during normal play. For an audio pop, use the same project, stream, sample rate, and playback route. Start WPR immediately before the action, trigger the problem, and stop recording while the event is still easy to time. In WPA, mark the interval and compare it with a successful run under the same conditions.
- Keep a small log containing the ETL filename, workload, symptom timestamp, implicated module, driver version, change made, and validation result.
- Test one variable per run so a successful result can be reproduced and a failed result can be rolled back.
- Preserve the original ETL files; they provide the baseline for later comparisons.
- Escalate to the device or system manufacturer when the trace repeatedly implicates their component and the available driver or firmware choices do not resolve the issue.
What a defensible diagnosis looks like
You have a defensible DPC-latency diagnosis when the symptom is reproducible, a WPR trace contains the event, WPA shows DPC/ISR activity overlapping it, the module is mapped to a specific device or driver, and one controlled change alters both the trace pattern and the user-visible result under the same workload. If any link is missing, describe the result as a lead rather than a confirmed cause. This standard keeps a single number, a popular tweak, or a parts list from replacing measurement.
