One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor Minecraft Java servers running version 1.7 or later, the active session log is logs/latest.log inside the server’s root folder. Older sessions are compressed .log.gz files in that same directory, while crash details are stored separately in crash-reports/. Download the complete relevant file, remove IP addresses and tokens, then share it through a paste service such as mclo.gs.

Know which Minecraft log you need
A server can have several diagnostic files. Choosing the right one before you download anything prevents a support request from missing the event that caused the problem.

|---|---|---|
| The server is running now or the issue occurred in the current session | logs/latest.log |
The live session log; Minecraft continues writing to it while the server runs. |
| The issue occurred after a restart | logs/YYYY-MM-DD-N.log.gz |
A compressed log from an earlier session. The date and number identify that session. |
| The server stopped because of a crash | crash-reports/ |
A crash report generated separately from the normal log. |
| The server is running Minecraft 1.6.4 or earlier | server.log in the server root |
Older releases used a single root-level log according to the available historical guidance. |
The version boundary is important: the logs/ layout described here applies to 1.7 and later. The older server.log location comes from historical guide material rather than a confirmed current Mojang reference. If your release or host uses another arrangement, use the actual folder and filenames shown by that installation instead of renaming files or creating a substitute.
Locate the server root folder
The server root is the directory that contains the files and folders used to launch that server. You will normally see the logs directory beside other server files. How you reach it depends on where the server is hosted.

Using a hosting control panel
- Sign in to the panel that manages the Minecraft server.
- Open the section labelled Files, File manager, or a similar file-browsing tool. Panel wording varies.
- Open the server’s
logsdirectory. - Select
latest.logfor the active session. For an earlier session, select the matching dated.log.gzfile. - Use the panel’s download control. Some panels also expose a download button from the console view; if it is present, it may download the current log without opening the file manager.
If the panel opens a directory that has no logs folder, check that you are browsing the server’s installation directory rather than a general account or backup area. Do not assume that a console transcript is the same as the complete file on disk; helpers generally need the full log.
Using FTP or SFTP
- Connect to the server with your FTP or SFTP client and authenticate with the account supplied for that server.
- Browse to the server root, then open
logs. - Download
latest.logor the dated.log.gzassociated with the incident. - If the server crashed, go back to the root and also download the relevant file from
crash-reports/.
SFTP is preferable when your host offers it because it transfers files over an encrypted connection. The choice of transfer protocol does not change which Minecraft files you need.
On a locally hosted server
- Go to the machine and storage location where the server was installed.
- Open the server root, then open
logs. - Copy the file rather than moving it. For a live incident, copy
latest.log; for a previous incident, copy the appropriate dated archive. - Open
crash-reportsas well when the process actually crashed and include the report that matches the event.
Copying leaves the original available to the server and preserves the evidence in its original location. If the file is still changing, make a second copy after stopping the server or after the error has occurred so the ending of the session is included.
Understand the files inside logs
latest.log: the current session
latest.log is the file to retrieve when the server is currently running or the problem happened since its most recent start. Minecraft writes to it during operation, so a download taken while the server is running can represent only the log contents available at that moment. Capture it after reproducing the fault, and make sure the copy reaches the end of the relevant event.

Dated .log.gz files: previous sessions
When the server starts new sessions, older logs are kept as compressed files named in the form YYYY-MM-DD-N.log.gz. The date helps you identify the day; the final number distinguishes sessions with the same date. If the incident followed a restart, compare the time of the restart with these filenames and choose the archive from that session.
A .gz file is compressed, not corrupt. Extract it with a utility such as 7-Zip or WinRAR before reading or uploading it if the support service does not accept compressed files. Keep the original archive as well, because a helper may ask for the unmodified file.

Crash reports
A crash report is separate from the ordinary log and appears in crash-reports/ only after a crash has generated one. Download the report associated with the crash and the corresponding server log. The report can provide a focused failure description, while the log supplies the events leading up to it.
Share a complete log safely
Support volunteers usually need the complete file, not just the final screenful. The first warning or error can appear many lines before the final shutdown message, and removing the beginning can hide the trigger.

- Make a working copy. Never redact the only copy stored with the server. Work on a duplicate of
latest.log, the selected.log.gzafter extraction, or the crash report. - Inspect for private values. Look for server IP addresses, access tokens, and other sensitive values before posting. Remove or replace those values while leaving surrounding timestamps, messages, and stack traces intact.
- Preserve structure. Do not paste only the last 10 lines, remove every warning, or reformat stack traces into a summary. A helper needs the sequence of events and the original error text.
- Upload the full copy. mclo.gs is commonly recommended for Minecraft logs. Paste the entire text or upload the file according to that service’s current interface.
- Send the resulting link. Include the paste link in your support request rather than inserting a huge log into a chat message. If the issue belongs to an earlier session, provide the matching extracted archive as well; if the server crashed, provide the crash report.
Redaction should remove the secret value, not the whole line, whenever possible. For example, preserve a line’s timestamp and event description while replacing an exposed token with a neutral marker such as <redacted>. Do not publish credentials merely because they appear in a configuration-related message.
Choose the right session before uploading
It is common to have several dated archives. Use the incident timeline to select one rather than uploading every file.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Issue still happening: reproduce it once, then copy
latest.log. - Issue happened before a restart: identify the restart time and select the dated archive from that session.
- Issue happened on another day: use the date in the archive filename to locate that session.
- Crash after a normal-looking log: include both the matching log and the file in
crash-reports/. - Several crashes: match each report to the log session and tell the helper which pair belongs to the failure being investigated.
If you are uncertain which archive applies, providing the nearest complete sessions is more useful than trimming each file to a few lines. State the approximate time of the event so the reader can locate it quickly.
Troubleshoot a missing or empty log
There is no logs folder
First confirm the version and the directory you opened. For 1.7 and later, the expected current-session location is under the server root in logs. A control panel may initially show a home directory, a backup directory, or a console screen instead of the installation directory. Use its file manager to navigate into the server’s actual root.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For 1.6.4 and earlier, look for root-level server.log instead. Because the historical location is not confirmed here against a primary release document, verify it with the documentation for the exact old version if the file is absent.
The file appears empty or stops early
If the server is still running, the file may not yet contain the later part of the event. Reproduce the problem, wait for the failure message, and download a fresh copy. If the panel provides both a console download and file-manager access, compare them; use the complete file from disk when available.
You found only compressed files
That normally means you are looking at previous sessions rather than the active one. Open the directory for latest.log. If the incident occurred before the latest restart, extract the matching .log.gz with 7-Zip or WinRAR and share that extracted content.
The server crashed but no report exists
The crash-reports/ folder is created only when a crash report is produced. If there is no report, share the complete log anyway and explain that the process stopped without a report. Do not invent a crash-report filename or substitute an unrelated archive.

You cannot download the file
Check whether the account has file-download permission and whether the panel requires the server to be stopped before packaging a file. If the panel’s console has a download button, try that route; otherwise use FTP or SFTP credentials supplied by the host. Avoid editing or deleting the server file while trying to retrieve it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Include useful context with the link
A log link is most effective when the accompanying message identifies what the helper should look for. Provide concise context without replacing the file itself.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Describe the symptom: startup failure, disconnects, missing content, shutdown, or another observable result.

Privacy checklist before you post
| Check | Action |
|---|---|
| Server address | Remove public or private IP addresses if they appear in the log and are not needed to diagnose the error. |
| Tokens | Replace authentication or API-style tokens with <redacted>. |
| Other sensitive values | Review lines containing private connection details or secrets and redact only the value, retaining the surrounding diagnostic text. |
| Completeness | Keep timestamps, warnings, errors, and stack traces; do not post a hand-picked excerpt as the only evidence. |
| Correct session | Match latest.log, a dated archive, and any crash report to the same incident. |
| Original files | Keep an untouched local copy in case further analysis requires it. |
A practical workflow for common incidents
Startup failure
- Start the server or attempt the normal launch once.
- Wait until the failure is printed, then copy
logs/latest.log. - If the process produces a crash report, copy the matching file from
crash-reports/. - Redact addresses and tokens, upload the complete copies, and state the approximate launch time.
Problem after a restart
- Determine when the restart occurred.
- Open
logsand select the datedYYYY-MM-DD-N.log.gzfrom that session. - Extract it with 7-Zip or WinRAR, preserving the original archive.
- Share the complete extracted log and explain what changed after the restart.
Unexpected shutdown or crash
- Copy the current or matching historical log.
- Open
crash-reports/and copy the report generated for that event, if present. - Redact sensitive values in both files.
- Upload both and identify which file is the crash report in your message.
Version and hosting caveats
File names and panel labels can vary by Minecraft release and hosting environment. The documented layout here is the standard 1.7-and-later arrangement: an active latest.log, compressed historical logs, and a separate crash-report directory. Historical 1.6.4-and-earlier installations used root-level server.log according to the available guide excerpts. Newer releases and individual host panels were not independently checked against primary Minecraft documentation for this article, so a mismatch should be resolved by checking the exact release or host instructions rather than assuming the file is missing.
Do not rename a file to make it fit an expected pattern. Tell the person helping you the version, the path you actually found, and whether the file came from a panel, FTP/SFTP, or a local machine. That information lets them interpret an unusual layout without losing the original evidence.
What to send in a support request
A compact, complete request normally contains one paste link and a short set of facts:
- the Minecraft version;
- the symptom and approximate time;
- the relevant complete log link;
- the extracted historical log when the issue predates the current session;
- the crash report when a crash generated one; and
- a note identifying any redactions.
This format gives helpers the sequence of events, the file that belongs to the incident, and enough context to search without exposing information that does not belong in a public post.
