Protocite is a resource associated with the Frackin’ Universe (FU) mod for Starbound, not a confirmed feature of the unmodded game. FU’s community wiki lists Proto Worlds as its main source, with additional reported sources including Proto biomes, certain trees, and Mineral Rich Asteroid Mech Missions. Protocite Ore and Liquid Protocite are separate resources with different uses. Because the relevant wiki pages flag revision or overhaul concerns, check the recipes and item locations against your installed FU version.

Where to find Protocite Ore

The FU community wiki identifies Proto Worlds as the typical place to find Protocite Ore. It also lists Proto biomes on other planets, some trees on other planets, and Mineral Rich Asteroid Mech Missions as possible sources. The wiki does not provide drop rates for these sources, so it cannot establish which is fastest.

Gathering on a Proto World

The ore page describes Protocite as less common above ground and says underground digging yields more after reaching roughly the depth where many vanilla ores appear. This is qualitative guidance: it gives no precise depth coordinates or measured comparison. Bring suitable equipment and plan for the planet’s hazards; the Proto-World wiki page reports Proto-Poison, damaging storms, and Bio-Ooze in pools or storm precipitation.

Other reported sources

  • Proto biomes: The ore page lists these on planets other than Proto Worlds.
  • Trees: Some trees on other planets are reported to yield Protocite.
  • Mech Missions: Mineral Rich Asteroid Mech Missions are another listed source.

These are wiki-listed leads, not a rate-based comparison. The Protocite Ore page is marked “Needs Revision,” so verify any source in your installed FU version.

Preparing for Proto-World hazards

The Proto-World page reports exposure to Proto-Poison, storms that can cause damage, and Bio-Ooze that may appear in pools or as storm precipitation. It says harvesting and eating Vextounge grants temporary immunity to Proto-Poison, but does not establish how long that protection lasts. Do not assume it prevents storm damage or protects against Bio-Ooze.

What Protocite Ore is used for

The Protocite Ore page lists Protocite Bar, Protocite Fuel Canister, Protocyte Bow, and Protocyte Block under “Used In / Unlocks.” A separate generated Protocite page also describes the ore as an uncommon crafting material associated with Proto Worlds and shows extraction and crafting relationships. The pages differ in format, and the ore page needs revision; treat their entries as recipe leads rather than guaranteed current instructions.

Liquid Protocite: a separate resource

Liquid Protocite is not the same item as Protocite Ore. Its FU wiki page reports a Chemistry Lab recipe using research, nitrogen, and a Protocite Bar to produce three Liquid Protocite. That page lists downstream recipes including Protocite Fuel Canister and Morphite, among other items. It also warns that the wiki is undergoing an extensive overhaul and additions may be deleted, so confirm the recipe in-game before gathering ingredients.

How to verify recipes in your game

Starbound crafting recipes may require a particular station or an unlock. The general crafting overview supports checking both, but does not independently confirm FU’s specific Protocite recipes.

  1. Check that Frackin’ Universe is installed and note the version you are playing.
  2. Inspect the relevant in-game recipe or crafting interface for the item you want.
  3. Use the station shown by the game; for the reported Liquid Protocite recipe, the wiki names a Chemistry Lab.
  4. If an item or recipe is missing, check its unlock requirements and compare against a current FU reference for your version before making a long gathering trip.

What the available version information can—and cannot—tell you

Starbounder describes itself as a player-maintained wiki. Its landing page displays PC 1.4.4 (updated August 7, 2019), Mac 1.4.4 (updated November 18, 2024), and Xbox One/Series 1.4.5.2 (updated December 9, 2024). Those are the versions displayed there, not a guarantee of the latest version on every platform. The Protocite locations and recipe details cited here come from FU community pages, so the base-game version listings do not verify that those details apply to your installation.
