This checklist covers the Link’s Awakening Nintendo Switch remake: it has 32 Heart Pieces and 50 Secret Seashells. The Game Boy versions have 12 Heart Pieces and 26 shells, so use the Switch route only for the remake. Four Heart Pieces combine into one Heart Container.
The most reliable way to collect them is to follow item progression, then use the linked maps and numbered entries for exact routes. Locations below are grouped by approximate availability, not a mandatory order; some can be reached sooner depending on your route and equipment.
Before following the checklist: Switch and Game Boy counts
The counts and locations here are for the Nintendo Switch remake. Nintendo Life’s Heart Piece guide and Secret Seashell guide cover that edition; the Game Boy versions have fewer collectibles, as summarized by Zelda’s Palace. If you are playing on Game Boy, do not expect these Switch totals or locations to match.
Every Heart Piece: approximate route by progression
The Switch remake has 32 Heart Pieces. The route outline below names every checklist stop; open the numbered guide and map for exact directions, cave solutions, and prerequisites.

Before Tail Cave: Heart Pieces 1–5
- Win the first Heart Piece at the Trendy Game.
- Check the Mabe Village Tool Shop.
- Fish up the small fish at the Mabe Village Fishing Hole.
- Catch the large fish at the Fishing Hole.
- Use the Sword to reach the well in northwest Mabe Village.
After Tail Cave: Heart Pieces 6–7
Once you have the Roc’s Feather, look for one Heart Piece inside a circle of pits in Koholint Prairie and another along a line of pits in Tabahl Wasteland.
After Bottle Grotto: Heart Pieces 8–12
With the Power Bracelet, explore the cave in Mysterious Forest, the cave in Ukuku Prairie, the reward at Seashell Mansion for five shells, Pothole Field behind Richard’s Villa, and the cave network in Tal Tal Mountain Range.

After Key Cavern: Heart Pieces 13–18
With the Pegasus Boots, return to the Trendy Game for its second Heart Piece. The other stops are Dampé’s Shack’s tier-one “Fill Up Your Hearts” challenge, a cemetery cave, a cave behind black barriers in Ukuku Prairie, the area behind Animal Village houses, and a bombable wall in Lanmola’s lair in Yarna Desert.
After Angler’s Tunnel: Heart Pieces 19–23
After obtaining the Flippers, search the flooded cave at Tal Tal Heights, the Kanalet Castle moat, the tunnel between Ukuku Prairie and Animal Village, the flooded tunnel in southwest Martha’s Bay, and the waters south of Martha’s Bay.

After Catfish’s Maw: Heart Pieces 24–31
With the Hookshot, tackle Dampé’s Tier Two challenges and revisit a Mysterious Forest cave. The remaining stops are two separate pickups on the Rapids Ride or at its raft shop, a Rapids Race prize for finishing in under 40 seconds, the Animal Village cave-and-chasm route, and two locations in Western Tal Tal Mountain Range.
Late game: Heart Piece 32 and the final Heart Container
The last Heart Piece is outside Level 8, Turtle Rock, on the peak reached from a room inside the dungeon. After Turtle Rock, finish Dampé’s first 11 challenges and complete the twelfth, final Tier Three dungeon to earn the final Heart Container. Consult the numbered guide for the exact route through the peak and Dampé’s challenges.

Every Secret Seashell: use the map and the 1–50 list
The Switch remake has 50 Secret Seashells. The full numbered guide and map are the practical checklist: follow its entries from 1 through 50 rather than relying on landmark names alone, since several areas contain more than one shell and later pickups have item or story requirements.
The route reaches eastern and central Mabe Village, the Trendy Game, CiaoCiao’s kennel, Mysterious Forest, Toronbo Shores, Koholint Prairie, Tail Cave, Tabahl Wasteland, Goponga Swamp, Ukuku Prairie and its caves, Martha’s Bay, Seashell Mansion, Richard’s underground passage, Kanalet Castle, the Fishing Hole, Animal Village, the Rapids Ride, Ancient Ruins, Face Shrine, and Western Tal Tal Mountain Range.

What to check as you explore
- Cut grass or lift rocks, and dig with the shovel where the guide indicates.
- Bomb cracked walls and open chests, including side paths in dungeons.
- Complete the relevant trading-sequence deliveries and talk to the reward-giver.
- Fish for special catches, dive once you have the Flippers, and use the Hookshot where required.
- Explore the Rapids Ride and meet the Rapids Race time target for its prizes.
Examples in the numbered route include a shell hidden in eastern Mabe Village grass, a Trendy Game prize available after the Yoshi Doll and first Heart Piece, one revealed by digging in CiaoCiao’s kennel, and one behind a bombable wall in Tail Cave. Later entries include the Trendy Game’s second shell prize, a reward from Christine after delivering the Goat’s Letter, a Cheep Cheep at the Fishing Hole after Catfish’s Maw, Rapids Ride pickups and race rewards, and a shell from a friendly Zora after acquiring the Magnifying Lens.
Seashell Mansion rewards and the 50-shell completion
Take collected shells to Seashell Mansion to claim rewards at these milestones. Nintendo Life’s guide also explains that the Seashell Sensor beeps when Link is within five or six tiles of a shell.

The Koholint Sword replaces the ordinary sword, deals more damage, and fires a beam when Link has full health. Nintendo’s Play Nintendo tips also describe the broad Seashell Mansion and Sensor mechanics.
At 50 shells, the Mansion’s in-game message reads: “…You have discovered every secret. The proof is in the seashells you hold. I acknowledge the perseverance it took. May fortune bless you wherever you roam. My task here is finished.”
