If the demo is missing, check the signed-in account, Library filters, and View > Hidden Games before troubleshooting storage or downloads.
Where Steam demos appear
A demo is distributed through Steam like other software in the Steam catalog, but its visibility depends on the publisher’s current store listing and on your account and Library settings. The most reliable workflow is to begin in the Store, then use the Library only after Steam has added the demo to your account.

Search the Store for the exact game
- Open the Steam Store in the Steam client or in a web browser signed in to the account you use for Steam.
- Search for the game’s title followed by
demo. For example, search forgame title demorather than relying on a general web result. - Open the game’s official Steam store page and look for the demo offer on that page. The control may be presented as an install or play action, depending on whether the demo is already installed and how the publisher has configured the listing.
Store availability is controlled by the publisher. A demo may be listed separately, presented on the full game’s page, or no longer offered. If the current store page does not show a demo control, Steam’s interface cannot install that missing listing; check that you opened the correct game and that the publisher still lists a demo.

Use the Library when you already added the demo
Once a demo has been added to your Steam account, it normally appears as its own Library entry. If you cannot see it, first confirm that Steam is signed in to the account that obtained the demo. Steam identifies the wrong account and an incorrect Library filter as common reasons a game appears to be missing.

- Clear or adjust the Library filters so that demos and other game types are not excluded.
- Open View > Hidden Games. If the demo is listed there, right-click it, choose Manage, and select Remove from Hidden.
- Search the Library by the title instead of browsing a filtered collection.
Removing an item from the Hidden list changes its visibility; it does not install the local files. You may still need to use the store page or the Library’s install control to download it again.
How to install a Steam demo
Installation starts from the demo’s store page or its Library entry. Steam then downloads the files to one of your Steam Library folders.
Install from the store page
- Open the demo’s store page and select the install or play control for the demo.
- If Steam asks where to install it, choose a Steam Library location with enough free space. The store page shows the download and disk-space information supplied for that demo; use those values rather than estimating from the full game’s size.
- Confirm the installation. Steam places the request in its download queue.
- Open the client’s Download Manager to watch progress, pause or resume the transfer, change queue order, and review any update or error state. Steam states that downloads and updates can all be managed through the Download Manager.
- When the download and installation finish, open Library and select Play on the demo.
A demo can finish downloading while another title is ahead of it in the queue. If nothing appears to happen, check the Download Manager for a paused item, a scheduled download, or an error rather than repeatedly clicking the store button.

- A Steam account signed in to the client or browser where you are initiating the install.
- A current Steam client with permission to write to the selected Library folder.
- Enough free disk space for the demo’s stated download and installation requirement, plus room for Steam’s temporary installation work.
- A network connection that allows Steam’s download service to operate. Security software, firewalls, or managed networks can interfere with the connection or with disk writes.
The demo’s store page is the authority for operating-system support, controller support, accessibility information, and current storage requirements. Those values vary by publisher and by version, so do not assume that a demo supports every platform supported by the full game.
Choose or change the Steam Library location
Steam can use Library folders on additional drives. Selecting a different folder is useful when the system drive is short on space or when you keep games on a dedicated SSD.
Add another Library folder
- Open Steam’s storage management interface and choose the option to add a Library location.
- Use the plus button in Storage Manager to select or create a Steam Library folder on the other drive.
- Return to the demo’s installation prompt and select that Library location.
If an existing installation is on a drive that Steam no longer recognizes, add that drive’s original Steam Library folder in Storage Manager. Steam says existing games in an added folder should appear after the location is registered again.

Move an installed demo
To move a demo that is already installed, use Steam’s documented path:
- Open Library.
- Right-click the demo and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Move Install Folder.
- Choose another registered Steam Library folder and confirm the move.
Let Steam complete the move before launching the demo. Moving through Steam keeps the installation associated with the Library entry; manually dragging folders in File Explorer or Finder can leave Steam pointing to the old location.
Launch and manage the demo after installation
Launch the demo from Library with Play. Keep the Download Manager available if Steam is still processing other downloads, updates, or queued installation tasks. It provides the controls for queue order and download state, so it is the first place to look when a demo appears installed but is not ready to run.
Use the demo’s store page for version-specific details such as controller compatibility, supported operating systems, accessibility features, save-data behavior, and whether progress carries into the full game. These are not universal Steam rules: each publisher configures its demo independently, and a demo can change when its listing is updated.
How to uninstall a Steam demo
Uninstalling removes the demo’s local installation files from the selected Steam Library. It is separate from removing Steam itself and does not require deleting your entire Steam installation.
- Open Library in the Steam client.
- Right-click the demo’s Library entry.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Uninstall and confirm when Steam asks.
Afterward, the demo will no longer occupy its installed disk space. If you later want to play it and the publisher still offers it, return to the demo’s store page or use the Library entry to install it again. If you only want to stop seeing an unused entry, use Steam’s hide function instead of uninstalling; hiding changes the Library view, while uninstalling removes local files.

Do not confuse demo removal with uninstalling Steam
Removing the Steam application is a much broader operation. Steam warns that deleting Steam also deletes installed game content unless the steamapps folder is moved or backed up first. For a single demo, always use the Library entry’s Manage > Uninstall path.
Fix a demo that is missing from your Library
Work through visibility and account checks before reinstalling or changing files. Most missing-demo reports are caused by the account, a filter, or the Hidden Games list.
1. Confirm the account
Check the account name currently shown in Steam and compare it with the account that originally added the demo. A demo associated with another account will not appear in this Library, even if the same computer and Steam installation are being used.
2. Remove restrictive filters
Clear Library filters, collections, and search terms that could exclude demos. Switch to a broad Library view and search the title directly. A filter that shows only installed games, for example, will omit a demo that was added but is not currently installed.
3. Check Hidden Games
Open View > Hidden Games. For a hidden demo, right-click the entry, choose Manage, and select Remove from Hidden. Steam’s support instructions use that exact removal path for hidden items.
4. Check the store listing
If the account and Library settings are correct but the demo still cannot be found, open the game’s current store page. The publisher may have removed or changed the demo listing. Steam cannot restore an offer that is no longer present on the store page.

Fix “demo is uninstalled” when files are still on a drive
This message commonly means Steam is no longer connected to the Library folder containing the files. It can happen after a drive letter changes, an external drive is disconnected, or a Library folder was removed from Steam’s storage list.

- Open Steam’s Storage Manager.
- Use the plus button to add the existing Steam Library folder on that drive.
- Allow Steam to rescan the folder and check the Library again.
If the folder is unavailable or the files were actually deleted, add a valid Library location and install the demo again. Do not create a second empty folder with the same name while the original drive is disconnected; first reconnect the original location so Steam can identify the existing files.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix a Steam demo that will not download or install
Use the following sequence for a stalled download, an installation error, or a demo that repeatedly returns to the queue. The steps move from low-risk client resets to storage and network checks.
Restart the client and computer
Exit Steam completely, reopen it, and retry the download. If the problem remains, restart the computer. This clears temporary client and operating-system states without changing the Library files.
Clear Steam’s download cache
Use Steam’s setting for clearing the download cache, then sign in again if prompted and restart the download. Steam explains that clearing the cache flushes locally cached configuration data and obtains it again from Steam’s servers. A cache reset can remove a stuck queue state, but it does not create disk space or repair a disconnected drive.
Repair the Library folder
In Steam’s storage settings, select the Library folder involved in the installation and use the repair option when available. This addresses permission or folder-state problems that prevent Steam from writing files. If the folder is on an external or secondary drive, confirm that the drive is mounted and writable first.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Verify local files when Steam offers that option
For a partially installed or damaged demo, open its Library properties and use Steam’s local-file verification command when it is available. Steam compares the local installation with the files it expects and reacquires missing or damaged content. Verification cannot recover a demo that the publisher has removed from the store, and it cannot repair a drive that the operating system cannot access.
Try another Download Region
Steam’s download-region setting determines which content server the client uses. If a download repeatedly fails, select another available region, restart the client if requested, and retry. This is a diagnostic step: if the alternate region works, the original region may have been temporarily congested or experiencing an outage.
Check firewall, antivirus, and other interfering software
Security software can block Steam’s network connections or prevent it from writing and renaming installation files. Temporarily review the relevant firewall and antivirus rules according to your security product’s documentation, then restore normal protection after testing. On a managed computer or network, an administrator may need to allow Steam’s traffic and disk access.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Confirm space and permissions
- Compare free space on the selected drive with the demo’s current store-page requirement.
- Make sure the Library folder is not read-only and that your operating-system account can write to it.
- Check that another process is not locking the folder or drive.
- Use a different registered Library folder if the current drive is full or unreliable.
After each change, retry from the Download Manager so you can see whether the error state changes. Keeping one failed item in the queue while starting several new downloads can make the cause harder to identify.
Start a demo remotely
Steam’s Remote Downloads feature can start a download from the web Games list or the Steam Mobile app. For this to work, the Steam client must be left running and signed in on the home PC or Mac, and the computer must be reachable. Steam recommends using remote downloads only on a private, secured computer.
- Leave Steam running and signed in on the home computer.
- From the web Games list or Steam Mobile app, locate the demo and choose the remote-download command.
- Check the home client’s Download Manager later to confirm that the job started, completed, or reported an error.
Remote start does not bypass storage requirements, publisher availability, account ownership, or download errors. It only initiates the same Steam download remotely.
How to compare two Steam demos before installing
Steam demos are not standardized packages. Compare the current store listings rather than assuming that two demos from the same publisher behave alike.
| Comparison point | What to check on each store page | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Platform and operating system | Supported operating systems and any platform-specific notes | A demo may support fewer platforms than the full game. |
| Download and disk space | The listed download size and required storage | Use the current values to choose a Library drive and avoid failed installs. |
| Progress carry-over | Whether demo progress carries into the full game | Carry-over is a publisher decision, not a general Steam feature. |
| Controller support | Controller details shown in the listing | Input support can differ between demos and full releases. |
| Accessibility | Accessibility features and supported options | Features may be documented specifically for the demo and can change by version. |
| Save-data behavior | How saves are handled and whether they are usable by the full game | Do not assume that a demo save is transferable without an explicit statement. |
| Current availability | Whether the publisher still shows a demo offer | A previously available demo can be withdrawn or replaced. |
Record the listing details on the day you install if a particular feature is important to you. Publisher-controlled values can change with updates, and Steam does not publish a universal catalog of demo sizes, retention rates, or progress-transfer rules.
Quick Recap
A practical decision path
- You have never installed the demo: search the Store, open the game page, and use the demo install control.
- You installed it before but cannot see it: confirm the account, clear Library filters, and inspect View > Hidden Games.
- Steam says it is uninstalled but you see its folder: reconnect the drive and add the existing Library folder in Storage Manager.
- The download is stuck: inspect Download Manager, restart Steam, clear the download cache, and then work through Library repair, verification, region, and interference checks.
- You need to free disk space: use Library > right-click the demo > Manage > Uninstall, not Steam’s application uninstaller.
- You want to begin while away: use Remote Downloads only with a running, signed-in Steam client on a private, secured home computer.
