Compare your map against a region-by-region shrine list, then use the Purah Pad’s Shrine Sensor to search the specific area. Tears of the Kingdom has 152 Shrines of Light: 120 on the Surface and 32 in the Sky. For Surface shrines, the Depths map offers an extra cross-check: each Surface Shrine location corresponds to a Lightroot below. Sky shrines need a separate search.
Start by checking the right map layer
Use the total as an audit: there are 120 Surface shrines and 32 Sky shrines, for 152 overall, according to Nintendo Life’s regional guide, published November 6, 2023. Compare your map with its regional list and coordinates rather than relying on memory or sweeping all of Hyrule again.
Check Surface and Sky separately. A Surface shrine checklist cannot account for the 32 Sky shrines, and a missing marker on one map layer does not tell you whether you have searched the other.
Narrow the search with the Shrine Sensor
The Purah Pad’s Shrine Sensor pings when a shrine is nearby. It is a local detector, not a global checklist: it can help you home in once you know which region or coordinates to investigate, but it will not identify every shrine you have yet to find across the whole map. GameSpot’s shrine guide, published May 19, 2023, explains the sensor and shrine-finding mechanics.

Use Lightroots to audit Surface shrines
Switch to the Depths map and compare Lightroot markers with Surface shrine locations. Each Surface Shrine location corresponds to a Lightroot below, so an unexplored or unmarked Lightroot location can point you toward a Surface shrine to check. This comparison applies only to Surface shrines; there are no shrines in the Depths, and Lightroots do not account for Sky shrines.
Check whether the shrine is gated
A shrine may be missing from your map because you have not discovered its location, because its challenge or quest remains incomplete, or because access depends on a quest or campaign progression. Not every shrine is simply waiting in plain sight. GameSpot describes Shrine Quests involving a Sky Crystal or a timed ring challenge, as well as mirror puzzles, riddles, labyrinths, and progression-related access.
Rank #2
- Ultrahand: Using the new Ultrahand ability, Link can pick up, move, and rotate almost any object, and can even attach objects together to create bridges, vehicles, and more!
- Fuse: Magically fuse almost any object to Link’s current weapon, shield, or arrow to increase durability, damage, or even add a new effect. Experiment with lots of different combinations to come up with surprising—and sometimes hilarious—results!
- Ascend: Add a new dimension to your exploration with Ascend, which gives Link the ability to pass through solid objects above him. Rise up through ceilings, hillsides, and even certain enemies to create seemingly impossible shortcuts.
- Recall: Use Recall to make objects in motion move backward through time, letting Link ride fallen boulders skyward, recover thrown weapons, or send projectiles back where they came from.
- No marker at the listed coordinates: Search the surrounding area with the Shrine Sensor and look for a nearby quest or challenge.
- A pedestal or crystal is involved: Investigate whether a Sky Crystal needs to be carried to the pedestal to reveal or access the shrine.
- The location points to a timed challenge, mirror, riddle, or labyrinth: Follow that challenge rather than treating the coordinates as an ordinary entrance.
- The location remains inaccessible: Check whether the relevant campaign or quest progression has been completed.
Finish with a separate Sky-shrine audit
Once you have checked Surface locations against the Depths, return to the Sky map and compare it with the guide’s Sky-region list. Use the Shrine Sensor locally when you have narrowed down a likely area, and check for a challenge or progression requirement if a listed shrine is not yet available. The Lightroot shortcut cannot find these 32 shrines.
