The password location depends on the image that created your server. On a DigitalOcean LAMP 1-Click Droplet using local MySQL, SSH in as root and read /root/.digitalocean_password. A Droplet configured with a managed database instead uses /root/.digitalocean_dbaas_credentials, the DATABASE_URL environment variable, and the database cluster’s control-panel details. Bitnami images generate an application password that also serves as the MySQL password, while an Amazon Lightsail Bitnami LAMP instance exposes it in bitnami_application_password.

Credential locations at a glance
There is no universal “one-click LAMP password” file. The image publisher and the database architecture determine both the file path and the account you should use.

DigitalOcean LAMP 1-Click with local MySQL
1. Connect to the Droplet
Open an SSH session as root using the password selected during Droplet creation or the SSH key attached to the Droplet. If you normally log in with another account, switch to a root shell before reading a file under /root.

2. Read the generated MySQL password
sudo cat /root/.digitalocean_password
DigitalOcean’s LAMP catalog identifies this file as the location of the MySQL root password. The image initializes the MySQL root account, runs mysql_secure_installation, and creates the debian-sys-maint system user used by service-management scripts.
3. Test the password without exposing it
mysql -u root -p
Press Enter when prompted for the password, then paste or type the value from the file. A successful login opens the MySQL monitor. If your application uses a separate database or user, authenticate with that account instead of assuming every application connection should use root.
Protect the file and its contents
- Treat
/root/.digitalocean_passwordas a secret, not as documentation. - Do not paste the value into tickets, chat rooms, source control, screenshots or public logs.
- Keep the password prompt interactive; avoid forms such as
mysql -u root -pYOUR_PASSWORD. - If you must copy the value, verify that no trailing spaces or newline characters were added.
The file contains the initialized root credential, not necessarily the credentials your PHP application uses. A production application should normally have its own database user, database name and least-privilege grants. Check the application’s environment or service configuration for those values, but avoid printing complete secrets into a shared terminal transcript.
DigitalOcean LAMP configured with a managed MySQL database
Selecting Add a Database changes the architecture. The one-click image stops and disables the Droplet’s local MySQL service, so the local root password file is no longer the credential you need for the application’s database.
Read the Droplet-side credential data
sudo cat /root/.digitalocean_dbaas_credentials
The Droplet receives managed-database details in this file and in the DATABASE_URL environment variable. Depending on how the application was configured, the variable may contain the username, password, host, port, database name and connection options in one URL. Treat that entire value as a secret: URLs can expose passwords in shell output, diagnostics and process listings.
Confirm the cluster values in the control panel
Open the managed MySQL cluster’s Overview page and verify the hostname, port, database name, username, password and SSL or trusted-source requirements. DigitalOcean documents doadmin as the default accessible user. The conventional MySQL port is 3306, but a cluster can specify another port; use the value shown for your cluster rather than assuming 3306. The control panel can reveal or copy the current password and connection details when you have the required account permissions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesConnect with an interactive prompt
mysql -u doadmin -p -h HOSTNAME -P 25060 -D DATABASE
Replace HOSTNAME and DATABASE with the values displayed for your cluster. The 25060 value is an example connection shape, not a universal port; if the Overview page lists a different port, use that port. Enter the password only when MySQL prompts for it. If the cluster supplies a different username, use that account instead of forcing doadmin.
Check network access before blaming the password
- Ensure the Droplet is an allowed trusted source for the managed cluster.
- Use the cluster hostname, not
localhost;localhostpoints back to the Droplet. - Use the cluster’s required SSL mode or certificate settings.
- Confirm that the database name exists and that
doadminhas access to it.
A timeout, certificate error or rejected trusted source is different from an authentication failure. Validate the endpoint and network policy first, then retest the username and password. This separation prevents unnecessary password changes when the credential was correct all along.

sudo cat /home/bitnami/bitnami_credentials
Newer Bitnami images generate the password randomly. Older image revisions can differ, so do not assume that a universal password such as bitnami will work. The image’s credential file is authoritative for that particular installation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use the value with MySQL
mysql -u root -p
When prompted, enter the application password read from the credential file. If the application itself uses a non-root database user, inspect its configuration for that username and database name; the file supplies the generated password, not a guarantee that every application connection uses root.
Use the correct SSH account
Bitnami images commonly provide a bitnami operating-system account rather than asking you to log in directly as root. Log in with the account supplied by the image or provider, then use sudo to read the file. A “permission denied” result usually means the command was run as an unprivileged account without sudo.
Do not confuse the operating-system account with the MySQL account. Logging in over SSH as bitnami does not mean that bitnami is the database username; Bitnami’s documented database username is root, while the generated application password is shared by the application and MySQL.
Amazon Lightsail Bitnami LAMP instances
Open the provider’s browser SSH session
- Open the Lightsail instance in the console.
- Choose the Connect tab.
- Select Connect using SSH.
- Wait for the terminal session to open in your browser.
Read the password file
cat bitnami_application_password
The file is normally in the instance user’s home directory. If the shell starts elsewhere, use its absolute home-directory form:
Recommended Free Tools
cat $HOME/bitnami_application_password
AWS documents this as the default application-password procedure for its Bitnami LAMP instance. Use the displayed value at the MySQL password prompt rather than putting it on the command line. If the file is not found, verify that you opened the intended Bitnami LAMP instance and that the shell’s home directory belongs to the instance user; do not substitute a DigitalOcean path.
How to identify which deployment you have
When a path does not exist, stop and identify the image instead of trying random password files. The following checks narrow the possibilities without changing authentication settings.
Check the provider and image label
- A Droplet created from a DigitalOcean LAMP 1-Click image generally follows the
.digitalocean_passwordor.digitalocean_dbaas_credentialsconvention. - A virtual machine described as Bitnami LAMP generally uses the
bitnami_credentialsfile. - A Lightsail Bitnami LAMP instance exposes
bitnami_application_passwordin the instance home directory.
Determine whether MySQL is local or managed
On a DigitalOcean LAMP deployment with Add a Database, the local service is stopped and disabled. A connection to localhost can therefore fail even when the managed password is correct. Use the managed hostname and port from the cluster page, and inspect DATABASE_URL when the application was configured through an environment variable.
Inspect application configuration carefully
Applications often keep a database name, username, host and SSL mode in an environment file or service configuration. Read those settings without printing secrets into a shared terminal transcript. The credential file tells you where the generated password is; it does not prove that the application uses the MySQL root account.

Separate provider access from database access
Your cloud-console login, SSH key, operating-system account and MySQL account are four different access layers. A valid SSH key proves only that you can reach the server. It does not reveal which database endpoint the application uses, and a valid database password does not grant permission to read a root-owned file. Identify the layer that failed before changing credentials.
Local versus managed MySQL: what changes
| Decision point | Local MySQL on the Droplet | Managed MySQL cluster |
|---|---|---|
| Primary credential location | /root/.digitalocean_password |
/root/.digitalocean_dbaas_credentials, DATABASE_URL and cluster control panel |
| Typical username | root |
doadmin |
| Network endpoint | Usually the Droplet itself, often localhost |
Cluster hostname supplied by the provider |
| Port | Local MySQL port configured on the server | Use the cluster’s listed port; 3306 is the standard MySQL port, but it is not guaranteed |
| Local service state | Enabled and serving the database | Stopped and disabled by the one-click setup |
| Access controls | Operating-system and MySQL permissions on the Droplet | Trusted sources, network reachability and SSL settings in addition to MySQL permissions |
| Maintenance responsibility | You maintain the database service, backups and upgrades on the server | The provider operates the managed service; you still manage users, application access and backup policy choices |
| Failure clues | Local socket or service errors often indicate the server-side service or account | Timeouts, SSL errors and trusted-source failures can occur before password validation |
Managed service credentials are also more likely to be rotated from the provider console, while local credentials are changed through MySQL administration on the server. Document which workflow owns the secret so a future operator does not reset the wrong account.
Why the password in the file may not work
You read the wrong file for the image
The most common mistake is applying a DigitalOcean path to a Bitnami machine, or using the local-password file after selecting a managed database. Verify the provider, image and architecture before changing anything.
The deployment is managed, not local
If the local service was disabled, mysql -u root -p may connect nowhere useful. Use the managed hostname, its username and its port. A correct password cannot fix an incorrect endpoint.

Credential files normally end with a newline. When copying from a terminal, select only the password characters. Do not add quotation marks, spaces or a second line. Retest with mysql -u ... -p so the client handles the prompt.
The account or database name is wrong
A valid password for root does not authenticate as doadmin, and a valid login can still fail when the requested database does not exist or the account lacks permission. Match the username and database name to the application or cluster configuration.
Network, SSL or trusted-source settings block the connection
Managed services can reject a request before password authentication if the Droplet is not an allowed source or the client does not use the required SSL options. Check the cluster’s connection instructions and test basic reachability separately from credential entry.
The image revision uses a different authentication setup
DigitalOcean confirms that the one-click image initializes the root password and runs mysql_secure_installation, but its catalog does not promise one reset procedure for every image revision or authentication plugin. If the expected file is absent or the value is rejected, follow the current recovery documentation for that exact image. Do not blindly switch authentication plugins or edit MySQL system tables.
The secret was rotated after the file was created
A credential file reflects the value written during image initialization. If an administrator later changed the MySQL or managed-cluster password, the old file may remain while the server accepts only the newer value. Compare the file with the current provider control-panel credential and with the application’s configured secret before assuming the image is broken.

Safe recovery when the credential file is missing
- Record the provider, image name, image version if shown, and whether a managed database was selected.
- Check the provider’s current recovery instructions for that exact image and account model.
- Confirm whether the application is reading a secret from
DATABASE_URLor another environment setting instead of the file you found. - Take a backup or snapshot according to your operational policy before making authentication changes.
- Change one setting at a time and test with an interactive MySQL client.
A missing file is not evidence that a random password reset command is safe. Image revisions can use different authentication plugins, service users or initialization logic, so recovery must match the image that actually built the server. If you no longer have the original SSH key or console access, restore that provider access first; database recovery cannot compensate for an unreachable host.

Create an application-specific account
Use a dedicated MySQL account for the web application with only the privileges it needs. Keep root or administrative credentials for maintenance rather than embedding them in application code.
Rotate exposed credentials
If the password appeared in a ticket, shell history, repository, log or screenshot, treat it as compromised. Rotate it through the provider or MySQL administration workflow, update the application’s secret, and restart the service that caches the old value.
Document the architecture, not the secret
Record whether the database is local or managed, the image/provider, the credential-file path, the endpoint source and the recovery owner. Do not put the password itself in operational notes.
Verify backups and restoration access
Finding a password proves only that authentication is possible. Confirm that backups run, that the application can reach the intended database, and that an authorized administrator can restore access without relying on an undocumented one-click default.

Frequently asked questions
Is there one default password for every one-click LAMP server?
No. DigitalOcean, Bitnami and Lightsail images use different files and account models, and Bitnami images can generate a random password.
Why does /root/.digitalocean_password not exist?
You may be using a different image, a different provider, or a managed-database configuration. Identify the image first, then check the matching credential source.
Can I use localhost for a managed database?
No. A managed database uses its cluster hostname. On the DigitalOcean Add a Database setup, the local MySQL service is stopped and disabled.
Is port 3306 always correct?
It is the standard MySQL port, but a managed cluster can use another value. Always use the port shown in the cluster’s connection details.

Where does Lightsail store the Bitnami password?
Open the instance’s Connect tab, choose Connect using SSH, and run cat bitnami_application_password. If the shell is not in the home directory, run cat $HOME/bitnami_application_password.
Why does the password work in the file but not in my application?
The application may use a different username, database, endpoint or password, especially after a managed database was configured or credentials were rotated. Compare its settings with the provider’s connection details and test the matching account interactively.
Should I put the password after -p?
No. Use -p by itself so MySQL prompts for the secret. A password typed directly in the command can appear in shell history, process listings or logs.

Read it only in a private SSH session, avoid shared transcripts, and never paste the value into tickets, repositories, screenshots or public logs. Use an interactive mysql -u ... -p prompt.
The Bottom Line
Identify the provider and whether MySQL is local or managed before trying a password. DigitalOcean local LAMP uses /root/.digitalocean_password; DigitalOcean managed deployments use DBaaS credentials and cluster details; Bitnami uses its generated application password; and Lightsail exposes bitnami_application_password. Keep every credential out of command arguments and rotate it if it has been exposed.
