phpMyAdmin normally has no separate account database. It signs in to MySQL or MariaDB with a database user, so the username and password you need are usually the credentials for that database account. On a local installation that account is often root; on shared hosting it is commonly a site-specific user created in the hosting panel.

Find the account assigned to your site, identify whether phpMyAdmin uses cookie or config authentication, then change the database password with an administrator account and update every application that stores the old value. The steps below cover local stacks, hosting panels, configuration files, ordinary SQL resets, and the locked-out recovery path.

What a phpMyAdmin login actually is
phpMyAdmin is a web interface for a MySQL or MariaDB server. It does not usually create an independent “phpMyAdmin password.” The login prompt passes a database username and password to the server, which then checks that account’s privileges.
The account is identified by both a name and a host, such as 'root'@'localhost'. Two accounts with the same username but different hosts can have different passwords and permissions. A reset must target the account and host that phpMyAdmin really uses.

- Local development:
rootis common, and some preconfigured stacks initially use a blank root password. - Shared or managed hosting: the account is usually a custom database user listed in cPanel, Plesk, or the provider’s database section.
- Application installations: a CMS or PHP application may use a separate database user recorded in its own configuration file.
Cookie and config authentication
The $cfg['Servers'][$i]['auth_type'] setting in config.inc.php determines how phpMyAdmin obtains credentials.

If the file uses cookie, changing the user or password lines will not recover the account; you must use the database account’s real password. If it uses config, the stored value must be changed after the server-side password is reset.
Find the username and password for your setup
Shared or managed hosting
- Sign in to the hosting control panel, not to phpMyAdmin.
- Open the section labelled Databases, MySQL Databases, or a similar name.
- Find the database assigned to the site and note its database user. Hosting providers often add an account prefix, so copy the complete name rather than only the part you chose.
- Use the panel’s Change password or equivalent control if you still have panel access. This is generally safer on a live server than changing the account manually in SQL.
- Record which database and user belong to the site before making a change. A site can have several databases and several users.
The hosting-panel password is not necessarily the database password. Changing the panel login alone does not change the MySQL account, and changing the MySQL account does not change the panel login.
XAMPP, MAMP, WAMP, and similar local stacks
Open the stack’s database tools and inspect its MySQL or MariaDB settings. The account is often root, but the initial password differs by package and by how the installation was configured. Some local stacks ship with a blank root password; do not assume that is still true after setup.

Search the project for its database connection settings as well. Common locations include a framework environment file, a CMS configuration file, or a PHP file containing a host, username, password, and database name. The application may use a restricted account instead of root, and that is the account phpMyAdmin should use when you are testing the application’s database.
Docker and other containerized installations
Check the container environment variables, compose file, secret store, or startup documentation for the database user and password. A phpMyAdmin container can connect to a database container with credentials supplied at runtime; editing a host machine’s unrelated config.inc.php will not change those values. Also check whether the database data volume preserves an older password: changing an initialization variable does not necessarily alter an already-initialized database account.

Locate phpMyAdmin’s config.inc.php on the server or local installation and search for:
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['auth_type'] = 'cookie';
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['user'] = '...';
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['password'] = '...';Only the user and password values in a config-authenticated setup are the saved login. In cookie mode they may be absent, empty, or irrelevant to the login prompt. Treat this file as a secret: anyone who can read a config-authenticated file can obtain the database credentials stored in it.

Identify the exact account before changing anything
Before running a reset, establish all three of these details:
- Username: for example,
rootor a hosting-panel user. - Host: commonly
localhost, but possibly127.0.0.1, a container hostname, or a wildcard host. - Server: the MySQL or MariaDB instance that phpMyAdmin reaches, which may differ from another local or remote instance on the same machine.
A common mistake is to reset 'root'@'localhost' while phpMyAdmin connects as another user or through another host entry. If you can still log in, open phpMyAdmin’s server information or account-management area and verify the current account. If you cannot, compare the hosting panel, config.inc.php, and the application’s connection settings.
Reset the password with SQL
When you have an administrator login
Use an account that still has permission to alter the target account. In phpMyAdmin, select the SQL tab for the server, enter the statement with the correct account and host, and execute it:
ALTER USER 'root'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'MyNewPass';This is the syntax shown in the official MySQL 5.7 Windows procedure. Replace both the account name and host when your installation uses different values, and use a password you have not used elsewhere. Server syntax and authentication plugins can differ in later MySQL releases and in MariaDB, so confirm the command for your installed server version before applying it.

You can run the same statement from a command-line client or another administrative database tool instead of phpMyAdmin. A successful statement changes the server-side credential; it does not automatically rewrite configuration files, environment variables, or application code.
Reset from a hosting panel instead
When a provider offers a database-user password control, use that control if possible. It selects the provider’s actual account and host mapping and avoids exposing an administrative SQL session on a production server. After the panel reports success, update the site’s stored credential and test both the site and phpMyAdmin.
Reset a non-root application user
Do not switch an application to root merely because its original user is forgotten. Reset the existing least-privilege account, preserving the permissions that the application expects. If the account was deleted rather than locked, an administrator must recreate it and grant the required privileges; that is a different operation from changing its password.
Update every place that stores the old password
A password reset is incomplete until clients stop sending the old value. Change the credential in the locations that apply to your installation:

- phpMyAdmin config mode: replace
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['password']inconfig.inc.php, and check the correspondinguservalue. - PHP applications: update the database settings in the application configuration or environment file.
- Command-line jobs and workers: inspect cron jobs, queue workers, import scripts, and deployment variables.
- Container and hosting secrets: update the secret or environment variable used to start the client, then restart the affected service if it reads credentials only at startup.
- Other tools: update desktop database clients, monitoring checks, migration tools, and connection pools that use the account.
Keep the new value out of public repositories and error messages. If a configuration file is served by the web server, verify that it cannot be downloaded as plain text.

Use another administrator account first
If any other MySQL or MariaDB account with sufficient privileges still works, connect with it and run ALTER USER for the forgotten account. This is the least disruptive recovery method because normal authentication and privilege checks remain enabled.

The official MySQL 5.7 Windows procedure describes a fallback in which the server is stopped and the account data is changed directly. A common variant starts the server with skip-grant-tables, which disables normal password checks while the server is running in that mode.
- Stop the database service cleanly and prevent ordinary clients from continuing to use it.
- Start it in the documented recovery mode for your exact MySQL or MariaDB version. Treat this as a temporary emergency state, not a normal operating mode.
- Connect locally, set a real password for the intended account, and make any required account-table change according to that version’s official instructions.
- Stop the recovery instance, start the server normally, and verify that authentication checks are active again.
- Test the new password, then update phpMyAdmin and application configuration files.
While grant tables are bypassed, anyone who can reach the server may be able to connect without a password or alter accounts. Use this route only on a computer or private test system you administer. Never leave the server running with authentication bypassed, and do not expose a recovery-mode database to a network.
When the database is on managed hosting
Do not attempt to stop or start a provider-managed database unless the provider explicitly documents that procedure. Use the hosting panel’s reset control or request support. Provider interfaces and account naming rules differ, and a direct server-recovery method may be impossible or prohibited.

- In cookie mode, sign out of phpMyAdmin and sign in with the changed username, host, and password.
- In config mode, reload phpMyAdmin after saving the updated file. If it still fails, check for a second server entry in the same file.
- Open the application’s database-backed pages and run a harmless operation that requires its normal account.
- Check the database server log for authentication failures if the application still reports an error.
- Verify that background jobs and scheduled tasks use the new secret rather than a cached process value.

Secure the account after recovery
- Use a long, unique password and store it in a password manager or an appropriate secret store.
- Prefer a dedicated application account with only the permissions the site needs; reserve administrative accounts for administration.
- Use cookie authentication when practical so a database password is not permanently embedded in phpMyAdmin’s configuration.
- If config authentication is required, restrict the file’s permissions and keep it outside publicly served paths where the installation permits.
- Remove temporary recovery settings and restart the server normally immediately after a bypass procedure.
- Review access logs and scheduled jobs after a suspected compromise. If the old password may have been exposed, rotate it everywhere that used it, not just in phpMyAdmin.
