How to Find Out Whether a Game Uses Generative AI

A store-page disclosure is a useful starting point, not a complete audit. Learn how to check its scope, verify claims, and distinguish confirmed use from inference.

Start with the game’s store-page disclosure, then check what it actually covers and when it was made. On Steam, the Content Survey distinguishes AI-made content that ships for players from AI tools used for general development efficiency. If a disclosure is missing or vague, look for a specific statement from the developer, publisher, performer, or relevant union. A missing label—or an asset that merely looks unusual—is not proof that a game is AI-free or AI-generated.

What counts as generative AI in a game?

For this question, the useful distinction is whether generative AI helped create content that players encounter, or creates content while the game is running. That is different from using “AI” as a broad label for a game’s ordinary computer-controlled behavior. A character following a fixed dialogue tree, for example, is not by itself evidence that the dialogue was generated by AI.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Steam’s current Content Survey guidance uses two categories for AI-generated content. Pre-generated content is made with AI tools during development and ships with the game. Live-generated content is created while the game runs. Steam lists artwork, sound, narrative, and localization as examples of content types that may be involved. Its guidance says general efficiency gains from AI tools are not the focus of this disclosure section.

Those distinctions matter because “uses AI” can refer to very different things: a finished background image made during production, dialogue generated in response to a player, or a tool that helped a team work more efficiently. A useful answer names the kind of use rather than treating these cases as interchangeable.

How can I tell if a video game uses AI?

  1. Open the game’s store page. On Steam, find the developer’s AI-generated-content disclosure in the store-page information. Read the statement itself rather than relying on an icon, search snippet, or someone else’s summary.
  2. Identify the content it describes. Does it say that shipped artwork, writing, sound, or localization was made with AI? Does it describe content generated during play? Or does it discuss tools used in production without saying that AI-created content appears in the game?
  3. Check the scope. Note whether the statement is about the playable game, store-page material, community assets, or marketing. These are not necessarily the same thing, and a disclosure about one does not automatically establish anything about the others.
  4. Record the date and source. A developer statement is evidence of what that developer said at that time. Store policies and wording can change, so avoid treating an old statement as a current, complete description without checking for a newer one.
  5. Corroborate important or ambiguous claims. Look for a named developer or publisher statement, an official production note, or a relevant performer or union statement. If the available evidence is only a visual impression or an anonymous post, describe the claim as unconfirmed.

Steam says its Content Survey helps customers understand a product’s content and forms part of its pre-release review process. The survey is still developer-provided information: it is a starting point for checking a title, not independent proof of every detail of its production.

A practical checklist for one title

When you check a particular game, write down the platform, the exact statement, who made it, its date, and the kind of material it mentions. Then separate the claim into a few plain questions: Is the material in the playable game? Was it made before release or generated during play? Is the statement about artwork, sound, narrative, localization, or another named feature? Does it cover the store page or marketing instead? This prevents a broad phrase such as “AI was used in development” from being mistaken for a specific claim about what players will encounter.

If the title is available on more than one storefront, check the relevant store page rather than assuming every platform displays the same disclosure. Policies vary by storefront, and the guidance described here verifies Steam’s approach rather than a comparable system across all major stores. Keep a link or quotation to the statement you relied on, so another reader can see its scope for themselves.

How to read Steam’s AI disclosure

Pre-generated content

This category concerns AI-assisted content created during development that ships with the game and is consumed by players. For instance, a developer might disclose AI-created artwork, sound, narrative, or localization included in the release. The key questions are whether the material is in the game and what the developer says was made with AI; a broad label alone may not answer either question.

Do not collapse “used an AI tool” and “AI-generated content ships in the game” into one claim. Steam’s wording is focused on player-consumed content, while a team’s production process may involve tools whose efficiency gains are not the subject of this section. If a statement only describes workflow efficiency, report that narrow claim; do not turn it into an assertion that players will see generated assets.

Live-generated content

This category covers content created while the game is running, such as an output that responds to player input. Steam asks developers using live-generated content to describe the guardrails intended to prevent illegal output. A disclosure of live generation therefore raises a different question from a disclosure about fixed assets: what can be generated during play, and what limits does the developer say are in place?

Read the guardrail description as a statement about the developer’s stated safeguards, not as a guarantee that every possible output has been independently verified. Steam says its pre-release review evaluates AI-generated output under the same content promises as other content. It also says, “Products on Steam must adhere to the content rules, regardless of whether it is disclosed in these surveys.” The point is that disclosure and compliance are separate matters: a survey response does not replace Steam’s content rules.

Production efficiency is not the same as shipped AI content

Steam’s current guidance says, “Efficiency gains through the use of these tools is not the focus of this section.” The distinction is between using AI tools to improve a production workflow and disclosing AI-created content that ships for players. If a developer says it used AI somewhere in development, do not infer from that alone that generated art, writing, voice, or other content appears in the game.

When a developer uses a broad phrase such as “AI-assisted,” ask what it means in that particular statement. It might refer to an asset that appears in the game, a live feature, or a tool used during production. Unless the source identifies which one, keep the answer at the same level of generality and say the details are unspecified.

Check the scope, not just the label

Steam’s current documentation focuses this survey section on shipped, player-consumed content. Valve’s initial announcement described an AI disclosure section and said much of the disclosure would appear on a game’s store page, but the current documentation is the better guide to the present scope. GamesRadar reported on January 20, 2026, that Steam’s wording had shifted toward content shipped with a game and consumed by players, drawing on Simon Carless’s observation of Steam’s backend. Treat that report as context about the wording’s history, not as a substitute for the live Steamworks documentation.

When reviewing a claim, keep at least four details together: who made it, what content it covers, when it was made, and whether it is a direct disclosure or an inference. A statement about marketing imagery does not establish that in-game assets were AI-generated; a statement about in-game content does not necessarily cover community material or later updates.

The date matters because a store policy or a game’s public description can change. The January 20, 2026 GamesRadar report is useful for understanding that Steam’s wording has changed; for a current decision, compare the relevant statement with Valve’s Steamworks Content Survey documentation as it stood when accessed on October 13, 2026. Do not quote an earlier description as if it necessarily set out the current rule.

How strong is the evidence?

Evidence What it can establish What it does not establish by itself
A game’s store-page disclosure What the developer disclosed about the scope described in that statement. That every AI use has been disclosed, or that the statement covers material outside its stated scope.
A named developer or publisher statement The organization’s stated account of a specific tool, asset, feature, or production practice. That a broad or undated statement answers questions it does not address.
An official production note Details the publisher or development team chose to document about a particular production decision. That the note is an exhaustive inventory of every tool used.
A performer or union statement Information relevant to the performer, agreement, or covered work identified in the statement. A universal label for every game, performer, voice, or AI feature.
A journalist’s report Reported context or attributed information, depending on what the article documents. A direct disclosure from the game’s developer unless the report cites one.
An anonymous post or visual impression A lead that may be worth checking against attributable sources. Reliable proof of how an asset was made.

This is a practical ranking, not a guarantee that any one source is complete. For a specific claim, prefer the source closest to the people or organization responsible, and quote or summarize only what that source actually says. If the source does not identify a feature, asset, or date, leave that uncertainty visible rather than filling it in.

Compare claims using the same four questions

If a store disclosure, an interview, and a social post seem to conflict, do not simply count sources on each side. Compare what each one is actually saying. First, who made the claim: the developer, platform, union, journalist, or an anonymous poster? Second, what does it cover: in-game assets, live generation, marketing or store material, or workflow tools? Third, when was it made, and could the policy wording or public account have changed? Fourth, is it a direct disclosure, an attributed report, or an inference based on clues?

Two statements can appear inconsistent while describing different scopes. For example, a statement that a title uses AI in production does not, without more detail, contradict a store disclosure focused on content shipped for players. Likewise, a report about a change to Steam’s disclosure wording is not itself a declaration about the production of a specific game. Keep claims separate until a source actually connects them.

What if the store page has no disclosure?

A blank or absent disclosure does not prove that a game uses no generative AI. The sources cited here do not establish a universal, exhaustive reporting system across every game storefront, and a store-page statement is not the same thing as an independent audit. Steam also says, “Products on Steam must adhere to the content rules, regardless of whether it is disclosed in these surveys.” That statement concerns Steam’s content rules; it should not be mistaken for a promise that an absent disclosure verifies the game’s production history.

If the page is silent, check the developer’s or publisher’s official news, production notes, and public statements for a specific answer. Search for the title together with the material in question—such as dialogue, voice, art, or localization—rather than relying only on a general statement that “AI” was used. If you cannot find an attributable statement, the accurate conclusion is that the use is unconfirmed, not that it did or did not happen.

It is also important not to assume that every storefront uses Steam’s survey or the same categories. Policies vary, and the guidance summarized here does not provide a current, comparable disclosure regime for every major store. For a game sold on a different platform, look for that platform’s own disclosure and the developer’s statements, then describe exactly what those sources say rather than importing Steam’s labels.

Can you tell from the art or dialogue?

Not reliably. A polished, awkward, inconsistent, or unusual-looking asset is not conclusive evidence of how it was made. The same visible result can have different production histories, while AI-assisted material may not have an obvious tell. Treat visual or textual clues as a reason to seek a source, not as proof of provenance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Be especially careful when a claim is based on a cropped image, a short voice clip, or an excerpt without context. The material may be altered, mislabeled, or taken from somewhere other than the game. Even an authentic asset does not reveal on its own whether it was generated, edited with a tool, or created through another process.

Style-based claims can be useful as leads, but they are not a reliable test. A claim that an image “looks like AI” is an inference about appearance, not an attributable account of how the asset was produced. If you repeat such a claim, make the distinction explicit and look for a developer or publisher statement that names the asset or process.

How to check claims about AI voices or performer likenesses

For a claim about a performer’s voice or likeness, look for a statement from the game’s developer or publisher and, where relevant, the performer or their union. The 2025 SAG-AFTRA Interactive Media Agreement, approved July 9, 2025, includes consent and disclosure requirements for covered AI digital-replica use. Its FAQ says employers must provide a reasonably specific description of intended use, with details such as the project code name, genre, role, and whether the character will be used for real-time generated dialogue. The agreement also requires usage reports for digital replicas to help identify possible employer non-compliance.

These requirements have a defined scope: they concern work covered by that agreement. They are not a general labeling rule for every game, do not automatically cover non-union performers, and do not establish that every AI-generated voice is a digital replica. Use the agreement to understand the covered performer context, not as a universal checklist that can certify whether any game uses AI.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you find a performer or union statement, preserve its context. A statement about consent, intended use, or reporting duties can help answer questions about a covered digital replica, but it does not necessarily describe every voice in a game or every feature that generates dialogue. Check whether the statement names the project, role, or use in question before applying it to a particular title.

A concise way to report what you find

When explaining whether a particular game uses generative AI, state the platform and the evidence before drawing a conclusion. A precise summary can follow this pattern:

  • Confirmed: name the developer, publisher, or platform statement, its date if available, and the content or feature it specifically identifies.
  • Limited scope: say whether the statement concerns shipped in-game content, live generation, production tools, marketing, or another category.
  • Unconfirmed: if the claim rests on an inference or lacks an attributable source, label it that way instead of presenting it as fact.

For a Steam title, link the store-page disclosure or the relevant developer statement when sharing the conclusion. If the claim concerns performer consent or a digital replica, point readers to the applicable performer or union material and describe its coverage accurately. This makes it possible to distinguish a documented use from a rumor, a workflow-tool claim, or a statement that answers a different question.

A careful conclusion may be narrower than a simple yes or no. For example, you may be able to say that a developer disclosed AI-assisted artwork in shipped content, while being unable to say whether the same process was used for every asset. Or you may find a statement about a production tool but no disclosure identifying player-facing generated content. Say what is established, what remains unclear, and which source supports each part.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find out whether a video game has AI-generated content?

Start with the game’s store page and read the developer’s disclosure. On Steam, identify whether it describes pre-generated content that ships for players or live-generated content created during play. If the wording is missing or vague, look for a specific, attributable statement from the developer, publisher, performer, or relevant union.

Does a missing Steam AI disclosure mean a game is AI-free?

No. An absent disclosure is not proof that a game used no generative AI. The disclosure is developer-provided information, and it is not an independent audit or a universal record of every production tool.

Can I tell whether game art was made with AI just by looking at it?

Not reliably. A visual style or an unusual-looking detail is not conclusive evidence of how an asset was made. Treat visual clues as a reason to seek an attributable statement, not as proof.

Is using an AI tool during development the same as shipping AI-generated content?

Not necessarily. Steam’s current guidance focuses on AI-created content that ships and is consumed by players, and says general efficiency gains from AI tools are not the focus of that section. A broad claim about AI use does not by itself establish that players encounter generated content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I check if a game uses an AI-generated voice?

Look for statements from the developer or publisher and, where relevant, the performer or union. SAG-AFTRA’s 2025 Interactive Media Agreement includes consent and disclosure requirements for covered AI digital-replica use, but its scope does not extend automatically to every game or performer.

The Bottom Line

To find out whether a game uses generative AI, read the platform disclosure, identify exactly what it covers, and corroborate important claims with attributable statements. Distinguish shipped content from live generation and workflow tools. If the evidence is missing, visual-only, or outside the claim’s scope, report the answer as unconfirmed rather than guessing.
