Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFirst prove whether mysqld is crashing or a client is merely losing its connection. Run mysqladmin version and compare the reported uptime with the time of the failure. A reset uptime means the server restarted; unchanged uptime points toward a network, client, timeout, or resource problem. For a real restart, the MySQL error log is the primary evidence: read the entries immediately before the exit, preserve any stack trace, and note InnoDB, operating-system, memory, and storage messages. If the same query appears before every exit, reproduce the failure in a controlled window with the general query log enabled. Do not delete redo logs or jump straight to forced recovery before you have preserved logs and assessed the data.

Use uptime to separate a crash from a lost connection
Run:
mysqladmin version
The output includes server uptime. Record it with the current time, then run the command again after the next reported incident. If uptime has reset to a small value, the server restarted. If it continues increasing, the client may have timed out, the network path may have failed, or an application connection may have been closed without a server crash. This single check prevents destructive recovery work on a healthy server.
Build a restart timeline before changing anything
- Record the incident time. Use the application error timestamp, monitoring alert, or the time a connection failed. Note the time zone used by each system.
- Capture uptime. Save the complete output of
mysqladmin versionimmediately after the event. - Copy the relevant error-log interval. Include messages before the exit and the complete startup sequence after it. Preserve the original log rather than editing it in place.
- Mark every restart. A sequence of short uptimes indicates repeated exits; one long uptime with intermittent client failures indicates a different investigation.
- Avoid uncontrolled reproductions. Repeatedly stopping and starting the service can overwrite useful context and can make recovery harder if storage is already damaged.
The timeline should answer three questions: when did the process last run normally, what was the final server action before it stopped, and what happened during the next startup? Those answers determine whether you investigate SQL, InnoDB, hardware, or the operating system first.

Read the MySQL error log first
Oracle MySQL’s troubleshooting guidance states that if mysqld has died and restarted, the reason may be found in the server error log. Read the log around the exact restart time rather than searching only for the word “error.” Warnings, shutdown notices, storage-engine diagnostics, and stack traces can be more informative than a single fatal line.
Stack traces and assertion failures
Save every line of a stack trace, assertion, signal, or fatal exception. Keep the server version, operating system, and the query or workload that preceded the failure with that trace. A reproducible trace is valuable for a minimal bug report; changing configuration or deleting files before preserving it can remove the evidence needed to identify a server defect.

InnoDB messages
Messages about corrupt pages, tablespaces, redo logs, failed reads, or recovery indicate a storage-engine or file-integrity problem. Let InnoDB complete its normal recovery when it can. If startup stops with an explicit corruption or missing-file error, protect the original data files and move to backup-based recovery rather than repeatedly forcing the server to start.
Operating-system, memory, and storage messages
Out-of-memory reports, failed writes, input/output errors, filesystem errors, and abrupt operating-system kills can explain a restart without a SQL defect. MySQL specifically advises investigating defective memory and disk subsystems because hardware faults can corrupt data. Treat an operating-system message as a lead, not proof that the database itself is at fault.
Deadlock information
A deadlock normally causes transactions to be rolled back, not the entire server to exit. If the failure appears related to lock pressure or deadlock diagnosis, set innodb_print_all_deadlocks so details are written to the server error log. This separates ordinary transaction conflicts from a process-level failure and gives you the participating transactions to examine.

Run the server in the foreground when practical
During a controlled maintenance window, MySQL recommends starting the server from a command prompt instead of hiding its output behind mysqld_safe or a Windows service. Foreground output can expose a fatal message at the instant the process exits. On Windows, use the --console option so diagnostic output is directed to the console.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsmysqld --console
Use the same configuration and data directory as the service normally uses; otherwise you may start a different instance and draw the wrong conclusion. Do not run a second instance against the same data directory. Stop the normal service first, confirm which process owns the data directory, and keep the console transcript with the error log. Foreground execution is an evidence-gathering step, not a permanent production launch method.
Test whether a particular query triggers the exit
Oracle MySQL’s troubleshooting guide says that about 95% of all bugs are related to a particular query. That is a statement in the guide, not a current independent measurement of production crash causes, so use it as a reason to test for reproducibility rather than as a probability for your server.
Enable the general query log for a controlled test
Turn on the general query log only for the shortest practical reproduction window. A typical dynamic configuration is:
SET GLOBAL log_output = 'FILE';
SET GLOBAL general_log = 'ON';
After the test, disable it:
SET GLOBAL general_log = 'OFF';
Exact privileges and configuration behavior vary by MySQL edition and version. If the statement is rejected, use the server’s documented configuration method instead of repeatedly changing settings at random. The general log can contain credentials, personal data, and high-volume traffic, so restrict access and protect the file.

Reproduce and isolate
- Choose a quiet, controlled period and record the server uptime before the test.
- Run the suspected workload once while watching the error log and the general query log.
- Compare the final query in the log with the timestamp of the process exit.
- Repeat only enough to establish that the same statement reliably precedes the failure.
- Reduce the case: remove unrelated clauses, tables, parameters, or application steps while preserving the crash. Keep the smallest statement that still reproduces it.
If the same statement precedes every exit after the tables have been checked, preserve the complete logs and prepare a minimal bug report. A query that merely appears near the crash is not proof of causation; the repeatable sequence is the important evidence.
Check table and storage-engine health
Use CHECK TABLE for a suspected table
For a table named in the error log or implicated by the failing query, run:
CHECK TABLE database_name.table_name;
Run checks during a controlled period and save the result. MySQL cautions that CHECK TABLE cannot detect every kind of corruption, so a successful result does not prove that all pages, indexes, or external files are healthy. A failed check is evidence to preserve the table and consult backup-based recovery, not an invitation to keep writing to it.
Handle MyISAM files with the server stopped
For MyISAM, stop mysqld before operating on table files with myisamchk. Point the utility at the table’s index file, for example:
myisamchk path/to/table.MYI
Never run file-repair operations against a live table. Confirm that the path belongs to the affected instance, make a copy first, and keep the original files unchanged. MyISAM repair procedures do not apply to InnoDB tables.

Know what normal InnoDB crash recovery does
After an ordinary unexpected exit, restart MySQL and allow InnoDB to finish recovery. InnoDB reads redo logs, rolls back uncommitted transactions, and in most situations completes automatically without DBA action. Recovery can take time after heavy activity; an apparent pause during startup is not, by itself, proof that the process is stuck.
Watch the error log until recovery reaches a completed state. Do not kill the process simply because recovery is slow. Record the recovery messages so you can distinguish a one-time clean recovery from a repeating failure at the same page, redo record, or file.
Do not delete redo logs to speed recovery
Removing redo logs can destroy information InnoDB needs to recover. MySQL says deletion should be considered only after a clean shutdown with innodb_fast_shutdown set to 0 or 1. An unexpected crash is not that condition. If the server has not completed a clean shutdown, preserve the redo logs and follow the recovery procedure for your exact version.
Recovery when corruption prevents startup
Restore a known-good backup first
If a hardware failure or severe system error corrupted InnoDB data, MySQL may refuse to start. Stop making changes to the damaged instance and identify the newest known-good base backup. Restore it to a separate location when possible, verify that it starts, and then apply binary-log changes with mysqlbinlog for point-in-time recovery. The recovery target is the last safe moment before corruption, not necessarily the most recent files.
Replace only the damaged table when evidence supports it
In some cases, one or a few corrupt tables can be dumped, dropped, and recreated while the rest of the instance remains usable. Do this only after you have a backup and have confirmed that the affected objects are isolated. Dropping a table is irreversible against the live copy; preserve a file-level copy and the diagnostic output before issuing destructive SQL.

Use innodb_force_recovery only for extraction
If ordinary startup fails and you need to dump recoverable data, innodb_force_recovery may permit a controlled start. Treat it as an emergency extraction setting, not a repair. Follow the version-specific MySQL guidance, use the lowest setting that permits a read-only dump, and plan to rebuild or restore the affected instance afterward. Data written while forcing recovery can worsen damage, so do not return such a server to normal production service.
Match evidence to the least destructive response
| Evidence pattern | Likely direction | Response and reversibility |
|---|---|---|
| Uptime never resets; no server startup sequence | Client, network, timeout, or resource issue | Investigate connections and host resources; no database repair is justified yet |
| Repeatable final query plus a matching stack trace | Application statement, optimizer path, or server bug | Isolate the minimal query and preserve logs for a bug report; configuration changes can be reverted |
| Corrupt page, tablespace, redo-log, or missing-file messages | File or storage integrity problem | Preserve files, run appropriate checks, and prefer backup restoration |
| Out-of-memory, I/O, or filesystem errors | Operating-system, disk, or memory failure | Correct the infrastructure and validate the restored data before normal use |
| Startup succeeds after an unexpected exit and recovery completes | Routine InnoDB crash recovery | Keep the recovered instance, archive the logs, and investigate the original trigger without deleting redo logs |
Investigate hardware and the operating system alongside SQL
A database error log can report the symptom of a failing subsystem rather than its cause. Examine host memory pressure, disk errors, filesystem messages, and any operating-system event that killed the process. MySQL specifically calls out memory and disk as priorities because defective hardware can both crash the server and corrupt its files.
Apparent page corruption can occasionally come from the operating system corrupting its own file cache. MySQL notes that restarting the computer may eliminate that apparent condition in some cases. Such a restart is a diagnostic step, not a substitute for checking the disk, memory, filesystem, and backups. If the same page fails again, assume the problem remains until the infrastructure evidence says otherwise.
When MySQL will not start: a safe sequence
- Read the complete startup error log and capture the first fatal message, not just the final shutdown line.
- Confirm that the data directory, tablespace files, and redo logs are present and belong to this instance.
- If the message indicates ordinary recovery, allow it to finish once without interruption.
- If corruption or hardware failure is reported, stop write attempts and preserve the original files.
- Test a known-good backup on separate storage and plan point-in-time recovery with the available binary logs.
- Only if data extraction is urgent and normal startup remains impossible, use the version-specific
innodb_force_recoveryprocedure to dump data.
This order keeps reversible actions ahead of destructive ones. A forced start, file deletion, or table drop can remove the opportunity to recover information that a clean backup restore would preserve.
What to include in a minimal crash report
A useful report lets another administrator reproduce the failure without guessing. Include the MySQL version and operating system, the exact restart times, uptime output, the relevant error-log interval, the complete stack trace, storage-engine check results, and the final general-log query when one exists. Describe whether the failure is deterministic, whether it occurs during startup or under load, and whether a clean shutdown changes the result.
Attach the smallest reproducible SQL case rather than an entire application dump. Redact credentials and sensitive values, but do not remove schema details that determine the execution path. Keep an untouched copy of the original logs so redaction does not erase timing or sequence information.

Operational checklist
- Use
mysqladmin versionto prove whether uptime reset. - Preserve the error log before restarting repeatedly or changing files.
- Capture stack traces, InnoDB diagnostics, operating-system errors, and the final query.
- Use foreground execution and
--consoleonly in a controlled maintenance window. - Enable the general query log briefly, protect it, and disable it after reproduction.
- Run
CHECK TABLEwith its limitations understood; stop MySQL before usingmyisamchk. - Let normal InnoDB recovery complete and never delete redo logs after an unclean shutdown.
- For confirmed corruption, restore a known-good backup and apply binary logs with
mysqlbinlogwhen point-in-time recovery is required. - Reserve
innodb_force_recoveryfor controlled data extraction, not production repair. - Check memory, disk, filesystem, and operating-system cache behavior as well as SQL.
The reliable path is evidence first, then the least destructive remedy: prove the restart, correlate the error log, isolate a query if one is reproducible, verify the storage engine, and restore rather than improvise when corruption is confirmed.
