For the most dependable picture of an NFL player’s availability, check the NFL.com injury report during the week, then check the NFL.com inactive report for the specific game close to kickoff. Practice participation, a game-status designation and the final inactive list are different updates; none should be mistaken for another.
Check the weekly injury report first
Open the NFL.com injury report and select the current week and relevant team. Use it to see the reported injury, practice participation and the club’s game-status designation. The NFL presents practice status and game status in separate fields, so a player who did not practice is not automatically inactive for the game.
Read the game-status designation
- Questionable: It is uncertain whether the player will play.
- Doubtful: The player is unlikely to participate.
- Out: The player will not play.
The NFL says players who are certain to play are not listed on the Game Status Report. A Questionable designation is not a prediction that the player will or will not suit up; it means the outcome remains uncertain.
Use the inactive report for the final game-day check
Close to kickoff, open the NFL’s separate inactive report and find the report for the correct game and week. This is where to confirm the announced inactive list rather than infer availability from practice notes or the earlier game-status designation. NFL.com publishes game-specific lists during the season.

When to check
NFL Support says inactive designations are made about 90 minutes before the game is scheduled to start. NFL Football Operations describes club representatives delivering inactive lists during the 90-minute officiating meeting. Treat that as a useful window, not a guarantee that every list will appear at one exact minute. Refresh the game-specific report as kickoff approaches.
Know when the weekly report is filed
For the 2026 regular season, NFL guidance sets a 4:00 p.m. New York time deadline—or as soon as possible after practice—for clubs to file the Game Status Report on the designated reporting day. The designated day varies by game day: Saturday for Monday games, Tuesday for Wednesday games, Wednesday for Thursday games, Thursday for Friday or Saturday games, and Friday for Sunday games. This timetable is specific to 2026; check the league’s guidance for the applicable season.

The initial report is not necessarily the last word. The NFL’s 2026 guidance requires a club to report a change if a player’s condition changes after the initial Game Status Report. If the player’s status could affect a fantasy decision or your game-day plans, recheck the official report and then confirm against the game’s inactive list near kickoff.

Secondary coverage can help you spot late news, but verify it against the NFL’s report or the team’s own announcement before treating the player’s status as settled. For a weekly injury or practice update, use the league injury report; for the final announced game-day availability, use the specific game’s inactive report.
