Start with the NFL’s official injury report for the correct week, then read the injury, practice participation, and game-status fields separately. Check again close to kickoff: a practice report is not a final decision about whether a player will play, and late updates can change the picture.

Where to find the official NFL injury report

Open the NFL’s official injury report and confirm that you are looking at the relevant week. The linked page is the league’s Week 4 report for the 2026 season, so use the week selector or corresponding report for another week rather than treating Week 4 as a live report for every matchup.

Find the player under the correct team. The report separates the injury description, practice participation, and game status into distinct fields. That layout is useful because those fields describe different things, not three versions of the same availability forecast.

How to read practice participation and game status

Practice participation: what happened at practice

Practice participation records whether a player had full, limited, or no participation. It describes the player’s practice status; on its own, it does not establish whether the player will be active for the game or how much they will play.

Game status: the team’s designation for the game

Game status is a separate designation. The NFL report may list Questionable, Doubtful, or Out, while some players have practice information without a listed game designation. Do not convert a limited or missed practice into a definitive game-status label when the report does not give one.

Also read annotations. A player may have no or limited practice participation for a reason unrelated to injury. The 2026 report includes the annotation “Not injury related – resting player”; it would be misleading to interpret that note as evidence of an injury.

When to check for updates before kickoff

The filing schedule depends on the day the game is scheduled. The NFL’s 2026–27 important dates page sets out practice-report and game-status-report timing. For Sunday games, it lists practice reports for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, with the Game Status Report due Friday. The guidance says reports are due by 4 p.m. New York time or as soon as possible after practice; consult the schedule for the relevant game day rather than applying Sunday deadlines to every matchup.

The same schedule guidance requires a club to report an update if a player’s condition changes after the initial Game Status Report. Refresh the official report close to the player’s game, especially if no definitive game designation is listed or the situation remains unsettled. If it is still unclear, check the team’s latest communication for a later update. An earlier practice report should not be presented as the final active/inactive decision.

A practical check for your fantasy lineup

  1. Confirm the week and matchup. Open the NFL report for the player’s team and the correct game week.
  2. Read all three fields independently. Note the injury description, practice participation, and game status; include any non-injury annotation.
  3. Check the filing schedule. Use the schedule for that game day to understand when reports are expected and when a status may be updated.
  4. Refresh before the player’s game. Look for a newer league report or team update that supersedes earlier information.
  5. Make the lineup decision using the latest available information. Apply your league’s lineup deadline and rules; the injury report is an availability resource, not a prediction of fantasy points.

What the injury report can—and cannot—tell you

The NFL’s 2017 injury-report policy says, “To avoid confusion, the club’s Practice Report and its Game Status Report should be clearly separated when disseminating the information to the media.” The policy is useful context for why participation and game status should not be conflated; for current weekly timing and updates, use the league’s 2026 schedule guidance and the current report.

The official sources establish reporting categories and update timing, not a percentage chance that a player will suit up or a forecast of fantasy production. Treat the report as a time-sensitive status check, not a guarantee based on practice participation.
