To find a genuinely good Steam sale price, compare what you would pay now with the game’s own price history—not just the percentage-off badge. Wishlist games ahead of time, check their current price in your region, and compare relevant bundles or legitimate storefront offers before deciding whether to buy or wait.
What makes a Steam sale discount a good deal?
A discount is worthwhile when the current price is one you are comfortable paying for a game you actually want. The percentage off is only one clue: a large discount from a high list price can still cost more than the game has during other sales. Compare the amount you would pay with the game’s recorded price history and your own budget.

Use the price shown for your Steam region and currency. Regional prices are not interchangeable, and changing your account region to seek a lower price violates Steam’s Terms of Service, according to SteamDB’s price-history FAQ.
How to check a game’s price history
- Open the game’s SteamDB price-history page. SteamDB is an independent service, not an official Steam rating or judgment. Its price-history pages show recorded prices in tables and graphs, and it says it tracks 41 Steam currencies with data going back to 2012. Those figures describe SteamDB’s own service.
- Match the currency to your Steam store. Compare the history for the region and currency in which you would actually buy the game.
- Check the history’s date range. A displayed low may be the lowest price captured during the tracker’s recording window, not an all-time low. SteamDB’s separate Steam Dashboard tool also cautions that its listed low covers its recording window. Avoid calling a price an all-time low unless the history supports that claim.
- Compare the current price with past sale prices. Look at the amount payable and the dates and frequency of earlier discounts. History can help you judge whether today’s offer is unusual, but it cannot establish what the next sale will bring.

How to find deals on games you actually want
Build your Wishlist before the sale
Add games you are interested in to your Steam Wishlist ahead of time. Steam Support points users to the Wishlist for sale notifications. Valve says discounts of 20% or greater trigger email notifications to players who have the game on their Wishlist; the notification threshold does not mean the offer is necessarily the game’s best price. Filter the sale listings
During a sale, narrow the selection to games you might buy and prices you can afford. SteamDB’s sales listings document filters for price, discount percentage, tags, features, release date, Wishlist status, owned games, and followed games. A filter can make browsing more manageable; it does not replace checking an individual game’s price history.

Compare bundles and other legitimate offers
A bundle or another legitimate storefront may change which offer is best. SteamDB lists bundles and supports filtering sale listings for them. When comparing offers, make sure they cover the same game edition, region, and license type; a different edition or product is not a like-for-like price comparison. SteamDB’s sale guidance also recommends comparing stores because another store may sometimes offer a Steam key for less. Check the seller and terms before buying, and compare the final price you would pay.
Use the game’s price history alongside the current offer, rather than assuming a bundle or alternate store is automatically better. Start with SteamDB’s price-history and sale tools to check game, bundle, and package pages.

Should you buy now or wait?
Set a price you are willing to pay. If the current offer is at or below that threshold and the game is worth that amount to you, buying now is a reasonable choice. If it is not, keep the game on your Wishlist and wait for another offer.
Past sale frequency and discount depth can inform your expectations, but they cannot guarantee a future discount or price. Publishers set discounts, and SteamDB says it cannot know which games or prices will be discounted in an upcoming sale. Treat historical patterns as context, not a promise.

How Steam’s seasonal sales fit into your plan
Valve’s Steamworks documentation lists four seasonal sales each year. As of October 7, 2026, its schedule listed the Autumn Sale for October 1–8, 2026, and the Winter Sale for December 17, 2026–January 4, 2027. Sale dates and live offers can change, so check Valve’s current seasonal-sales schedule and Steam’s sale page for the active dates and end time.
SteamDB’s calendar says seasonal sale prices have not changed during an event since 2015, after flash and daily deals were removed. That is SteamDB’s guidance, rather than a guarantee from Valve; check the live sale and current official information if timing matters. See the SteamDB sales calendar.
