How to Find the Best-Reviewed Horror Games on PS5

A practical method for finding well-reviewed PS5 horror games: verify the PS5 edition, compare critic aggregates and review counts, keep player ratings separate, and choose between action-forward and psychological horror.

There is no single objective “best” horror game on PS5. A useful shortlist starts with platform-specific critic scores, keeps player ratings separate, and then matches the game’s style of fear to your taste. Two well-documented reference points are Resident Evil 4, an action-forward survival-horror game, and Silent Hill 2, a psychological, atmosphere-led horror game. Their published scores are snapshots rather than permanent rankings, so check the current listing before buying.

The method below shows how to find highly reviewed PS5 horror games without mistaking a high number for a guarantee that you will enjoy the experience.

What “best-reviewed” should mean on PS5

“Best-reviewed” is a filtering method, not a genre verdict. Start with a critic aggregate that is specific to the PS5 edition, record how many reviews produced it, and then check player sentiment as a separate signal. Finally, decide whether the game delivers the kind of horror you actually want: fast action, sustained tension, psychological unease, or something designed around shared play.

Critic aggregates answer one question: how did professional reviewers assess the release? Player scores answer another: how did a particular group of owners rate it on a different scale and at a different point in the game’s life? Neither number measures your personal tolerance for combat, puzzles, disturbing themes, or slow pacing.

Resident Evil 4 - PS5
  • Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
  • Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
  • Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
  • Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

Two PS5 reference points with published evidence

The available PS5-specific evidence supports a comparison of two games rather than a definitive ranking of every horror title on the console.

Game PS5 critic snapshot Player-score context Broad horror profile Platform and store notes
Resident Evil 4 93 Metascore from 126 critic reviews on Metacritic; classified as Universal Acclaim (2023 page snapshot). 9.0 Metacritic user score from 9,743 ratings at the snapshot. Action-forward survival horror. PlayStation’s genre listing identifies Horror, Adventure, and Action. PlayStation lists PS4 and PS5 versions, with a 24 March 2023 release date. PlayStation warns that some PS4 features may be absent when played on PS5.
Silent Hill 2 86 Metascore from 105 critic reviews on Metacritic; classified as Generally Favorable (2024 page snapshot). 9.0 Metacritic user score from 5,122 ratings; PlayStation Store snapshot shows 4.75/5 from 64,942 ratings. Psychological horror built around atmosphere and dread, as reflected in critic descriptions. US PlayStation Store listing shows Standard and Deluxe editions. The snapshot displayed $69.99 for Standard and $79.99 for Deluxe, with discount presentation, and said PlayStation Plus Extra subscribers could access it in the catalogue. Verify all of these volatile details before purchase.

The table deliberately places critic and player figures in separate columns. A 9.0 Metacritic user score is not directly interchangeable with a 4.75/5 PlayStation Store rating: the services use different scales, populations, moderation systems, and rating counts.

Choose the horror experience before you chase a score

Action-forward survival horror

Resident Evil 4 is the clearer starting point if you want horror combined with frequent action and variety. Leon Hurley’s GamesRadar review described the remake as “full of action and variety that’s as exhilarating now as it ever was.” That is a reviewer’s editorial judgment, not a promise that every player will react the same way, but it accurately signals a faster, more active comparison point than a purely atmosphere-led game.

Use this category when you want danger to be expressed through encounters and forward momentum rather than long stretches of uncertainty. A high critic aggregate here indicates broad approval of that overall design, not that the game will feel frightening to every player.

Psychological, atmosphere-led horror

Silent Hill 2 is the better fit when your priority is psychological horror, oppressive atmosphere, and dread that builds gradually. Critics describe it in those terms, making it a useful counterpoint to an action-heavy survival-horror recommendation.

Capcom Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition PlayStation 5 Game
  • Intense horror experience with dark narrative
  • Improved images and refined game mechanics included
  • Players take on the role of Leon S Kennedy
  • Mission to save the president's daughter from danger
  • Challenging environments and strategic combat scenarios await

Choose this profile if you value mood and unease over constant intensity. A lower aggregate than the action-forward example does not make it an inferior choice for someone who specifically wants psychological horror; it shows why score alone cannot settle a taste-based decision.

Solo immersion versus shared play

A separate decision axis is whether you want a solitary, immersive campaign or a game designed around shared or multiplayer scares. The two documented examples here are useful solo reference points, while a broader search should identify multiplayer support explicitly on the store page. Do not infer a multiplayer mode from a game’s popularity or from a generic “horror” label.

A repeatable process for finding highly reviewed PS5 horror games

1. Confirm that the exact release has a PS5 version

  1. Open the game’s official PlayStation product page or PlayStation Store listing.
  2. Check the platform field for “PS5,” not merely a PS4 title that might run through backward compatibility.
  3. Record whether the listing is for a cross-generation release, a separate PS5 edition, or an upgrade path.
  4. Read the compatibility notes. For example, PlayStation’s Resident Evil 4 page lists both PS4 and PS5 and warns that some PS4 features may be absent on PS5.
  5. Check the edition name before comparing scores. A standard edition, deluxe edition, remake, remaster, and original release may have different store pages and review histories.

This step prevents a common mistake: finding a highly reviewed horror game and only discovering at checkout that the listed version is not the PS5 product you intended to buy.

2. Use the PS5-specific critic aggregate

On Metacritic, select the page for the PS5 version rather than relying on an all-platform score. Write down both the Metascore and the number of critic reviews. The review count provides context: a score built from 100-plus reviews is a broader snapshot than one built from a handful.

For the two reference games, the recorded pages show 93 from 126 critic reviews for Resident Evil 4 and 86 from 105 critic reviews for Silent Hill 2. Those values describe the pages as accessed on 13 October 2026; they are not fixed specifications.

3. Read the review descriptors, not just the number

Open several of the linked critic reviews and look for recurring descriptions of pacing, action, atmosphere, and tone. A score tells you the direction of consensus, while the language explains what reviewers were rewarding.

Rank #3
Resident Evil 4 Remake for PS5 (100% UNCUT) (German Packaging)
  • Resident Evil 4 Remake for PS5 (German Packaging)
  • If descriptions repeatedly emphasize action and variety, expect a more active survival-horror experience.
  • If they emphasize psychological pressure, atmosphere, and dread, expect a slower or more mood-driven experience.
  • If they discuss cooperative or competitive systems, verify the mode on the official listing before assuming it is central to the game.

Do not convert one memorable quotation into a universal fact. Hurley’s statement about Resident Evil 4 is a review opinion and should be read as such.

4. Check player sentiment as a second, separate signal

Metacritic lists a 9.0 user score for each reference game, but the underlying rating totals differ: 9,743 for Resident Evil 4 and 5,122 for Silent Hill 2 at the snapshot. Use those numbers to understand how much owner feedback is represented, not to declare a tie or a winner.

The PlayStation Store offers another perspective for Silent Hill 2: 4.75 out of 5 from 64,942 ratings in the captured listing. That store-owner rating should remain separate from the Metacritic user score because the scale and audience are different. When two services disagree, investigate the written comments and the timing of the ratings instead of averaging the numbers.

5. Sort candidates by horror style

Create a short list under headings such as action-forward survival horror, atmospheric psychological horror, space or science-fiction terror, and multiplayer scares. This category structure helps you avoid comparing games that aim for different emotional effects. A high score in one category does not automatically make a game the best choice in another.

The documented evidence gives you two anchors: action-forward horror through Resident Evil 4 and psychological, atmosphere-led horror through Silent Hill 2. For additional candidates, apply the same checks rather than assuming that every game commonly called “horror” offers the same kind of fear.

6. Verify edition, price, and access immediately before purchase

Store information is volatile. The captured US listing for Silent Hill 2 showed Standard and Deluxe editions at $69.99 and $79.99 respectively, with discount presentation, and stated that PlayStation Plus Extra subscribers could access the game in the catalogue. Treat those as dated US listing details, not a standing price or subscription promise.

  1. Confirm the country or region of your store account.
  2. Check the current edition name and included content.
  3. Look for the current price rather than relying on an old article or screenshot.
  4. If you are using a subscription, confirm that the title is still included and whether access applies to your plan.
  5. Review the platform label one more time before payment.

How to interpret scores without creating a false ranking

Critic aggregates and review counts

A critic aggregate is most useful for identifying broadly acclaimed releases within the same platform and time frame. The review count tells you how wide that snapshot is. It does not correct for differences in publication standards, launch timing, patches, or the kinds of games a publication tends to cover.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comparing 93 and 86 can establish that the two Metacritic pages recorded different levels of critic consensus at the access date. It cannot establish that one game will be scarier, more replayable, or more suitable for your preferred style.

User scores and store ratings

User scores often move as a game reaches a wider audience, receives updates, or attracts coordinated rating campaigns. Store ratings may include owners who played through a subscription, purchased a discounted copy, or rated soon after launch. Treat a large count as useful context, not as proof of quality in every dimension.

Never combine a 10-point Metacritic user score and a 5-point store rating into a homemade average. The scales and rating populations are not equivalent.

Review age and snapshot dates

The two Metacritic pages represent 2023 and 2024 releases, while the score and rating snapshots were accessed on 13 October 2026. A later update can change a user score or rating count without changing the original critic reviews. Put the access date beside every number you publish or record for your own comparison.

A practical decision framework

If your priority is… Start with… Why What to verify next
Frequent action and variety within survival horror Resident Evil 4 Its PlayStation genre listing includes Horror, Adventure, and Action, and critic coverage presents it as action-forward. That you are buying the PS5 listing and have read the PS4-feature compatibility note.
Psychological pressure and atmosphere Silent Hill 2 Critic descriptions frame it as psychological horror built around atmosphere and dread. The current edition, price, and any subscription access in your region.
A broad consensus signal Compare both Metacritic pages Each page supplies a platform-specific Metascore and a critic-review count. The access date and whether a newer score snapshot has appeared.
Owner sentiment Read both Metacritic users scores and the relevant store rating Separate services reveal different audiences and scales. Rating counts, written reviews, and whether the figures are current.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Mistake: using an all-platform score

A game can perform differently across hardware versions. Always open the PS5 page when your purchase is for PS5, and record the platform beside the score.

Resident Evil 3 The Board Game: City of Ruin Expansion
  • As consciousness returns and you blink shadows from your eyes, all you can hear is the ringing in your ears. At first, you think it might be from the bells, as you recall racing through the Clock Tower in search of gears to sound the great bell.
  • Then the blood drains from your face as the memories begin to surface. You thought you’d escaped Raccoon City. But it isn’t over yet.
  • Continue your desperate escape with 11 hours of new gameplay, nine gripping new scenarios, three terrifying new enemy types, and two large-and-lethal bosses.
  • This expansion will drastically change the course of your Resident Evil 3: The Board Game campaign, taking you beyond the built-up city streets to brand new locations plagued by new enemies.
  • But new enemies aren’t your only threat. To move forward, you must adapt to new gameplay mechanics introduced by the changed environment. Creep silently through the City Hospital. Wade through flood water in the City Park.

Mistake: treating the highest number as the scariest game

Aggregates measure review approval, not fear intensity. A reviewer may praise action, variety, or craft even when the game is less psychologically unsettling than another title.

Mistake: merging critic and player ratings

Keep critic aggregates, Metacritic user scores, and PlayStation Store ratings in separate columns. Their scales, audiences, and counts are different.

Mistake: ignoring the edition and region

Standard and Deluxe editions can have different prices and contents, while store access varies by country. Check the live listing in your account’s region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: assuming a PS4 listing guarantees feature parity

Resident Evil 4 demonstrates why compatibility notes matter: PlayStation warns that some PS4 features may be absent on PS5. Read the platform-specific notes for every cross-generation release.

Mistake: publishing old prices or subscription claims as current

Prices, discounts, and catalogue membership change. Date-stamp the information and recheck it immediately before recommending a purchase.

Building a shortlist you can trust

For each candidate, create a record with these fields:

  • Exact title and edition.
  • PS5 availability and any cross-generation caveat.
  • Critic aggregate, platform, review count, and access date.
  • Metacritic user score and rating count, if available.
  • PlayStation Store rating and count, kept separate from Metacritic.
  • Horror style: action-forward, psychological, atmospheric, science-fiction, or multiplayer.
  • Current regional price and subscription status, checked on the live store page.
  • Your own deal-breakers, such as slow pacing, intense action, or preference for solo play.

Then eliminate games that fail a hard requirement before you compare scores. If you require a PS5 edition, remove PS4-only results. If you dislike action-heavy horror, do not let a higher aggregate force an action-forward title ahead of an atmosphere-led alternative.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you

The documented pages establish two strong comparison points and a sound way to evaluate additional games. They do not establish a complete top-ten list, a market-wide ranking, or a universal winner. No market-size or audience study is available here, and no personal playtesting should be inferred from the published scores.

Use the numbers to narrow the field, the review language to understand the design, and the official store listing to confirm that the product you are buying is the PS5 edition available in your region. Your final choice should reflect the type of fear you want, not just the largest aggregate.
