The fastest way to find a Trial Chamber in Minecraft is to run /locate structure minecraft:trial_chambers while you are in the Overworld. The command works in both Java and Bedrock Edition, but cheats must be enabled. If you want to stay in Survival without commands, trade with a journeyman cartographer for a Trial Explorer Map or search underground cave systems around Y 0 to Y -40.
What are Trial Chambers?
Trial Chambers are underground Overworld structures added in Minecraft 1.21. They do not generate in the Nether or the End, and they have no required surface entrance. Their rooms contain combat challenges, including trial spawners and the chamber’s distinctive tuff-and-copper construction.

Look for tuff bricks and related constructed tuff variants combined with copper blocks, grates, doors, or trapdoors. A naturally generated patch of ordinary tuff by itself is not proof that a Trial Chamber is nearby. See the Trial Chambers reference for additional structure information.

With commands enabled, this is the most reliable method in either major edition:
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
/locate structure minecraft:trial_chambers
The structure identifier is plural: use trial_chambers, not trial_chamber or trial chamber. The command searches for the nearest matching structure in your current dimension. Because Trial Chambers are Overworld structures, return to the Overworld before running it.
Java Edition
- Open chat.
- Run
/locate structure minecraft:trial_chambers. - Note the returned X and Z coordinates.
- Travel to those coordinates and search underground.
In a single-player Java world, you can temporarily enable commands by pressing Esc, selecting Open to LAN, setting Allow Cheats to ON, and choosing Start LAN World. This enables commands for that session; it does not permanently change the world’s saved cheat setting.
If you want to verify the position without mining, Java’s Spectator mode can let you inspect the underground structure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Open the world’s Game settings.
- Enable Activate Cheats.
- Open chat and run
/locate structure minecraft:trial_chambers. - Travel to the returned X and Z coordinates.
Bedrock’s command reference lists minecraft:trial_chambers as the structure identifier and requires cheats for /locate. Activating cheats disables achievements for that Bedrock world. See Microsoft’s Bedrock /locate documentation.

Bedrock: search only newly generated chunks
When playing in an upgraded world, Bedrock also supports an optional Boolean argument:
/locate structure minecraft:trial_chambers true
The true argument restricts the search to new chunks. The default is false. This is useful when you specifically want a Trial Chamber in terrain generated after the world received the 1.21 update. Microsoft documents this option in its command examples.
How to reach the coordinates
/locate may return a position above or beside the structure rather than inside an accessible room. Use the returned X and Z values as your target, then inspect underground rather than expecting to emerge directly in a chamber.
- Travel until your X and Z coordinates are close to the result.
- Dig a safe, controlled staircase or shaft rather than dropping straight down.
- Search around the target if the first tunnel reaches ordinary stone, deepslate, or an unrelated cave.
Trial Chambers occupy a vertical range, so there is no single mandatory Y-level. Guides commonly place a starting room around Y -40 to Y -20, with other rooms extending upward toward Y 0. Searching only one exact depth can therefore miss part of the structure. If you reach below Y -50 without finding it, check that you centered on the coordinates correctly and explore in several horizontal directions.

Find one without commands: Trial Explorer Map
A Survival-friendly alternative is a Trial Explorer Map sold by a journeyman-level cartographer. In Java Edition, the cited trade costs 12 emeralds and a compass, although prices and trade details can vary with edition, discounts, and the villager’s trade state. The map identifies a generated Trial Chamber; it is not required for a chamber to generate.
- Level a cartographer until it reaches journeyman level.
- Check its available trades for a Trial Explorer Map.
- Buy the map and hold it while traveling.
- Move toward the marked structure until your player marker approaches the target area.
The map icon indicates the target region, not necessarily the exact block where an accessible room begins. Center yourself on the icon, dig a controlled shaft, and adjust several blocks around the target X/Z if the first attempt finds only stone or an existing cave. If the destination is outside the current map sheet, use a larger-scale map that shows both your position and the target.
Natural exploration: search caves
Large cave systems can expose Trial Chambers without a map or commands. Explore caves around approximately Y 0 to Y -40 and inspect walls for constructed tuff bricks and copper components. The structure may be hidden behind ordinary stone, so surface landmarks are not a dependable way to find it.
Recommended Free Tools
Bring sufficient torches, food, blocks, weapons, armor, and a way to handle vertical drops. Once you see the chamber’s engineered tuff-and-copper palette, you have visual confirmation that you have found the structure.

Trial Chambers in older worlds
An old world can contain Trial Chambers, but generation depends on when its chunks were created. In a world upgraded from before Java Edition 1.21 or Bedrock Edition 1.21.0, chambers generate only in chunks created after the update. Chunks that were already generated before 1.21 are not retroactively populated.
If your upgraded world’s nearest unexplored area is far away, travel into terrain you have not previously loaded. On Bedrock, /locate structure minecraft:trial_chambers true can specifically search new chunks. Do not assume that an old world cannot contain Trial Chambers; the restriction applies to previously generated chunks, not the entire save.
Troubleshooting
“No structure found”
First confirm that you are in the Overworld. The command searches the current dimension, so running it in the Nether or End cannot locate an Overworld Trial Chamber. In an upgraded world, the nearest valid chamber may also be beyond the already generated terrain. Travel into unexplored chunks and try again; Bedrock players can additionally use the true new-chunks argument.

The map points to a place with no chamber
Do not treat the map icon as an exact entrance. Center on the marked area, dig safely, and widen the search several blocks around the target X/Z. The chamber may be beside the first shaft, below a cave, or extending in another direction.

You found tuff, but no Trial Chamber
Ordinary naturally generated tuff is not enough to confirm a chamber. Look for the combination of constructed tuff-brick variants and substantial copper features such as grates, doors, trapdoors, or copper blocks.
The command does not work
Check that cheats are enabled, that the command is typed with the plural structure name minecraft:trial_chambers, and that you are using the command in chat. On Java, the Open to LAN cheat setting applies to the current session. On Bedrock, Activate Cheats must be enabled in the world settings.
Which method should you use?
| Situation | Best method |
|---|---|
| You want the coordinates immediately | /locate structure minecraft:trial_chambers |
| You are on Bedrock and want post-update terrain | /locate structure minecraft:trial_chambers true |
| You want to remain in Survival without commands | Trade for a Trial Explorer Map |
| You prefer exploration and already have a deep cave network | Search caves around Y 0 to Y -40 |
| You are in an old world | Use unexplored post-1.21 chunks |
Bottom line
Enable commands and use /locate structure minecraft:trial_chambers for the quickest result. Without commands, obtain a Trial Explorer Map from a journeyman cartographer or inspect large underground caves. In every case, remember that Trial Chambers are underground Overworld structures, can span multiple Y-levels, and generate in upgraded worlds only within chunks created after the 1.21 update.
