Confirm the absence, check how the offense has used its replacements, then weigh that role against your league’s scoring, roster cost and the player’s availability. The examples below are dated 2026 waiver snapshots, not live recommendations; check current practice reports, inactive lists and your waiver platform before placing a claim.
How to identify the receiver who benefits
- Confirm the injury situation. Separate an announced absence or injured-reserve placement from a speculative recovery timeline. A backup may be a short-term priority while the starter is out, but the claim can lose value quickly if the starter returns or the expected absence changes.
- Look for opportunity, not just a depth-chart label. Check routes, targets and target share, and whether the receiver has already been used in the vacated role. A chart can help identify roster changes, but it is only one input: RotoWire’s NFL depth charts describe updates for roster moves such as inactives and also caution that official team charts can be misleading.
- Read the box score alongside usage. Catches, yards and touchdowns tell you what happened in a game. Routes and target share help show whether the player had enough involvement for the opportunity to continue. One strong result is not, on its own, proof of a lasting breakout.
- Apply your league’s constraints. Check whether the receiver is available, your scoring format, roster depth, waiver budget and matchup. Published roster rates are snapshots from the article date, not a measure of present-day availability in your league.
- Recheck before submitting. Practice reports and inactive lists can change the outlook. Reassess if the injured starter is trending toward a return or another receiver is taking the routes.
What the 2026 waiver examples show
NFL.com’s archive lists waiver articles for 2026 Weeks 2, 3 and 4, published September 14, September 21 and September 28, respectively. The players and figures below reflect those dated weekly articles—not current injury confirmation, a permanent ranking or a guarantee of future production. Week 2, Week 3, Week 4, and the NFL.com waiver-wire archive.
Mack Hollins, New England — Week 4, 2026
NFL.com’s September 28 article said A.J. Brown was expected to be out into mid-October and described Hollins as New England’s short-term WR1. In the game cited, Hollins caught six of nine targets for 87 yards, led the team with a 19.5% target share and recorded 2.3 yards per route run. The article listed him as rostered in 5% of leagues at that time. Brown’s timeline and Hollins’s role were that article’s snapshot, not a current status update.
Keenan Allen, Indianapolis — Week 4, 2026
With Alec Pierce on injured reserve, Allen saw a season-high nine targets and caught six passes for 63 yards and a touchdown. NFL.com considered him playable that week and projected usefulness for a few weeks beyond it; that was a dated projection, not a guaranteed absence or role duration. His listed roster rate was 24% in the article.

Kalif Raymond, Chicago — Week 4, 2026
The article cited six catches on seven targets for 90 yards and a touchdown in the latest game discussed, a 23.1% team target share, and team leads at that point of 19 catches and 214 receiving yards. NFL.com recommended adding him while flagging a difficult immediate matchup against the Jets. His listed roster rate was 10% in that snapshot.
Devaughn Vele, New Orleans — Weeks 2–3, 2026
NFL.com linked Vele’s opportunity to Jordyn Tyson’s hamstring absence. The Week 2 article reported that Vele had caught seven of nine targets for 69 yards and a goal-line touchdown in Week 1, and projected him as the WR2 until at least mid-October, possibly longer depending on Tyson’s recovery. The Week 3 article then reported 12 catches on 16 targets for 133 yards and a touchdown across two weeks without Tyson, while noting Chris Olave remained the leading target. Together, these snapshots illustrate why to check the replacement’s actual role as well as the injured starter’s status.

Dontayvion Wicks, Philadelphia — Weeks 3–4, 2026
Wicks was not presented as a direct replacement for a specific injured starter. In Week 3, NFL.com cited 2.8 yards per route run and his route volume; in Week 4, it cited 2.3 yards per route run and a 31.2% air-yards share despite a disappointing game, calling him a future-oriented pickup. His example shows why underlying involvement may matter when a box score is underwhelming, but it does not establish a direct injury-driven claim.

| Decision factor | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Expected opportunity | Likely routes, targets and target share | A receiver needs involvement in the offense to convert an injury opening into fantasy value. |
| Role evidence | Whether usage has already expanded | Observed routes and targets are stronger evidence of a changed role than a depth-chart label alone. |
| Absence duration and certainty | Confirmed absence or injured reserve versus an uncertain timeline | A short-term opening can disappear if the starter returns sooner than expected. |
| Production and scoring chances | Recent catches, yards and touchdowns, including red-zone involvement | Results matter, but should be read alongside opportunity rather than treated as proof that usage will persist. |
| Team and matchup context | Passing context and the upcoming opponent | A real role can still have a less attractive immediate matchup or team environment. |
| League fit | Availability, scoring format, roster depth and waiver cost | A candidate’s value depends on your alternatives and league settings; a published roster rate cannot tell you whether that player is on your wire. |
What dated examples can—and cannot—tell you
Weekly waiver articles can show how a receiver’s role looked at a particular point in the season, including routes, target share and recent production. Those player-level snapshots do not establish a general success rate for injury-driven waiver claims, nor do they confirm a player’s status after publication. For a live decision, check current team or NFL injury news and your fantasy platform’s availability list. Depth-chart and projection tools can be optional research aids; RotoWire describes its depth-chart updates and paid features, but a tool’s chart should not replace current usage and status checks.
