The quickest check is in Joomla Administrator: open System → Information Panel → System Information and read Database Type and Database Version. To find the database name, host, username, or table prefix, inspect the site-root configuration.php file or the database settings shown in Global Configuration. If you cannot access either Administrator or the files, your hosting control panel or server administrator can provide the details.

Use Joomla Administrator first
The Administrator route is normally the safest and fastest because it is read-only: you can identify the active database connection without editing server files or changing credentials. You need a working Joomla Administrator account with sufficient permissions to open the system information screen.

- Sign in to the Joomla Administrator area.
- Open System.
- Under Information Panel, select System Information.
- Locate Database Type. This is the database driver or adapter Joomla is configured to use. If it displays MySQL, Joomla is using a MySQL-compatible connection; if it displays MariaDB, the configured database type is MariaDB.
- Read Database Version to see the server version reported to Joomla.
Joomla’s current 5.x documentation uses the path System → Information Panel → System Information. Older Joomla releases may show the same screen under Site → System Information. Menu labels vary by major version, so use the wording displayed by your installed release if it differs.
Find the database name and connection details
The System Information screen identifies the type and version, but the logical database name and complete connection settings are normally found in Joomla’s configuration. Joomla creates a file named configuration.php in the root directory of the site.

Open the Configuration File view
In the System Information area, look for a Configuration File view or panel. Current Joomla documentation describes System Information and Configuration File as separate panels for inspecting the environment and configuration. When this view is available, it can expose the settings without requiring a separate FTP or SSH session.
Use the view only to read values. Do not save changes simply because you opened the panel; changing a connection value can disconnect the site from its database.

If the Administrator view does not show the values you need, open the site’s root directory through your host’s file manager, an FTP client, or SSH. Select configuration.php and search for these configuration properties:

dbtypeidentifies the database adapter or type.hostidentifies the database server address.useris the database account username.passwordis the database account password.dbis the logical database name that contains Joomla’s tables.dbprefixis the prefix Joomla adds to its table names.
The exact formatting of the file can differ between Joomla versions, but the property names are the useful search terms. You do not need to understand every other setting in the file to identify the connection.

The database type and database version are different facts. A version number describes the server software reported to Joomla; it does not replace the database type. Likewise, the database name is a connection target, not the name of the server software.

How to answer common Joomla database questions
“Is my site using MySQL or MariaDB?”
Read Database Type in System → Information Panel → System Information. The displayed type is Joomla’s configured database adapter. If you need to confirm the underlying server rather than the adapter label, compare the displayed type and version with the database service information supplied by your host; do not infer it from the website’s front end.

“Where can I see the Joomla database name?”
Open the Configuration File view, if available, or inspect the db property in the root configuration.php. That value is the logical database selected for Joomla’s tables.
“What database host is Joomla connected to?”
Read the host property in configuration.php. It may be localhost, but a managed or remote setup can use a separate hostname supplied by the hosting provider.
“What table prefix does Joomla use?”
Read dbprefix in configuration.php. The prefix is placed before Joomla table names, so it is useful when locating the correct tables in a database-management tool or distinguishing multiple sites.

What to do when you cannot log in
If the Administrator login fails, the site is down, or you have no filesystem access, use the hosting control panel if it provides database-management or file-management information. Otherwise contact the hosting provider or server administrator. Ask for the database hostname, database name, database account, and the database server type and version associated with the Joomla installation.
A host may intentionally avoid displaying a password in its panel. That is not a problem if you only need to identify the database type or name. Request a credential reset or confirmation through the provider’s secure support process rather than asking staff to send a password in an ordinary email or public ticket.

- Never publish the
passwordvalue or paste the entireconfiguration.phpfile into a forum, issue tracker, chat room, or screenshot. - When requesting help, redact the password and remove any other secrets before sharing a small excerpt.
- Do not change
dbtype,host,user,db, ordbprefixmerely to identify them. - Keep a complete copy of the current database before changing database settings. Joomla’s installation guidance warns that an incorrect post-installation change can break the site.
- Store any downloaded configuration file securely and delete temporary copies when the diagnostic work is complete.
Reading a value is diagnostic; editing it is a configuration change. Treat the two activities differently.

Troubleshoot a connection error after migration
A migrated Joomla site that reports a database connection error should be checked against the account and hostname supplied by the new host. The goal is to compare the current configuration with the actual database service, not to guess at replacement values.
- Open the current
configuration.phpthrough the new server’s file manager, FTP, or SSH. - Record the values of
dbtype,host,user,db, anddbprefixwithout exposing the password. - In the hosting control panel or secure support channel, verify that the named database exists on the stated host.
- Confirm that the database account named by
userhas permission to access that database. - Check whether the provider requires a hostname other than
localhost. - Only after you have a complete current database copy, correct a value that the host confirms is wrong.
- Retry the site and review the host’s error information if the connection still fails; ask the host to confirm permissions and service status.
Joomla troubleshooting guidance specifically points maintainers to configuration.php after a move or connection failure. A mismatch in hostname, database name, account permissions, or password is more useful evidence than simply knowing that the site uses MySQL or MariaDB.

Joomla’s administration menus have changed across major releases. On current 5.x installations, start with System, then Information Panel, then System Information. Older documentation and older installations may place the command under Site → System Information. If neither path appears, use the Administrator search or consult the documentation for the installed major version, then look for the same concepts: System Information, Database Type, Database Version, and Configuration File.
A missing Configuration File panel does not mean the site has no configuration file. The root configuration.php remains the relevant file; the difference is only how you reach it.
