In YouTube Studio, open Content > Live to find upcoming broadcasts, or choose Create > Go live > Manage in Live Control Room. To match a particular encoder stream to its scheduled broadcast precisely, compare the stream’s YouTube resource ID with each broadcast’s contentDetails.boundStreamId using the authorized YouTube Live Streaming API. A reusable stream can be associated with more than one broadcast, so the key may not identify a single event.
Find the scheduled broadcast in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Content, then the Live tab. It separates streams into Live Now, Upcoming and Live Replay. YouTube’s live-stream management guide describes this route.
- Alternatively, open Create > Go live and select Manage in Live Control Room. Select a scheduled event to inspect it.
- Check the event title and scheduled time. In the event’s Stream area, compare the selected stream with the stream name/key saved in your encoder. YouTube documents stream-key management in its stream settings and key help.
- Start the encoder and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that the event and preview show the intended content before selecting Go live.
YouTube’s help documents these Studio routes, but not a separate Studio search box that returns a broadcast when you paste in an RTMP key. If several events use the same stream, inspect each event or use the API mapping below.
Understand what the stream key identifies
YouTube represents the incoming encoder feed and the viewer-facing event as separate resources. A liveStream is the feed and its ingestion settings; a liveBroadcast is the scheduled event and resulting YouTube video. As YouTube’s Live Streaming API guide puts it: “A broadcast represents an event that can be watched on YouTube as it happens. Each broadcast is a distinct YouTube video.”
A broadcast is bound to a stream, and YouTube’s guide says one reusable stream can be bound to up to three live broadcasts. Consequently, an encoder key can point to a stream that is associated with multiple events; it does not necessarily select one unique scheduled broadcast.

Map a stream to broadcasts with the API
This method requires authorization for the channel whose streams and broadcasts you are checking. Treat the key as a secret: do not send it to someone else as a troubleshooting shortcut. The API relationship is represented by resource IDs; the broadcast record does not expose the raw key.
- Identify the matching stream resource. Find the channel’s
liveStreamresource corresponding to the stream name/key configured in the encoder. Itscdn.ingestionInfoincludesstreamNameand ingestion-address information. See the liveStreams resource reference. - List upcoming broadcasts. Call
liveBroadcasts.listfor the authenticated channel withpart=snippet,contentDetails,status,mine=trueandbroadcastStatus=upcoming. Follow pagination if the response includes a next-page token. The supported parameters and response parts are documented in the liveBroadcasts.list reference. - Compare the binding. For each result, read
contentDetails.boundStreamIdand compare it with the ID of the matchingliveStreamresource. The liveBroadcasts resource reference documents the broadcast’s bound stream ID. - Resolve multiple matches using event context. If several upcoming broadcasts have the same
boundStreamId, compare their titles, scheduled times and lifecycle status, then check the Live Control Room preview. The shared stream ID establishes an association, not which event you intend to start.
Protect the key and avoid starting the wrong event
- If the key may have been exposed: reset it in Live Control Room under Stream > Stream key, then replace the saved value in the encoder. YouTube says resetting a key requires channel owner or manager permissions. See YouTube’s stream-key help.
- If the encoder reports a startup error: open Live Control Room > Stream, copy the current key and update the encoder. Do not assume an old saved key is still the active one. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting help directs creators to check and update this setting.
- If the preview is missing or shows the wrong feed: check the selected event, encoder’s stream configuration and incoming preview before going live. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder ahead of time and reviewing the preview; see its live-stream setup guidance.
- For transport security: YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts stream data into and through Google’s servers. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
