What’s actually slowing this PC down?

In OBS, open Settings > Video and check Output (Scaled) Resolution and Common FPS Value. Set the output to 3840×2160 and the frame rate to 60—or 59.94 if that matches your source and workflow. If either option is unavailable, first identify whether the constraint is OBS’s settings, your capture device, or your hardware; buying a GPU or capture card is not the first fix.
First check the OBS output settings
- In OBS Studio, open Settings > Video.
- Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 3840×2160 for 4K output. This controls the dimensions sent to the stream or recording.
- Set Common FPS Value to 60, or choose 59.94 if that better matches your source and workflow.
- Check Base (Canvas) Resolution separately. The canvas is the workspace where OBS arranges and composites sources; changing it does not by itself determine the delivered output size.
If the controls appear but the stream does not actually reach 4K60, that is a different problem from a missing option. Continue through the source, system, and YouTube checks below.
Check whether your capture source supports 4K60
A 4K60 canvas or output setting cannot turn a lower-resolution or lower-frame-rate capture into native 4K60. For a camera or capture card, open that source’s properties and inspect Resolution/FPS Type, Resolution, and FPS. These choices depend on the device’s supported modes. OBS warns that an unsupported resolution or frame rate can leave the source without a picture. See the OBS Project guide to video capture sources.
- If 3840×2160 at 60 fps is listed, select it and confirm that the source displays correctly.
- If 4K is available only at a lower frame rate, or 60 fps only at a lower resolution, the device or its current connection/mode is limiting capture.
- If the source goes blank after changing modes, return to a supported option rather than leaving an unsupported setting selected.
Separate a missing setting from a performance problem
OBS can offer 4K60 settings even when the computer cannot render and encode a complex scene at that rate reliably. OBS uses GPU resources to composite scenes, and 60-fps streaming can be substantially more demanding than 30 fps. Its encoding performance troubleshooting guide recommends reducing output resolution or frame rate to isolate performance limits.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Start with the target scene and observe whether the problem is a missing control, rendering lag, encoding lag, or dropped frames.
- Temporarily lower output resolution or FPS and simplify the scene. If the stream stabilizes, the issue is likely available rendering/encoding headroom rather than the presence of the setting.
- Check the encoder options OBS actually offers on your operating system and hardware. Hardware encoders are available only when the platform and hardware support them; see OBS Project’s hardware encoding notes.
- Restore settings one at a time to find the combination your system can sustain. If 4K60 remains unstable, use a lower output mode or upgrade only after identifying the specific source or system bottleneck.
Match OBS output to YouTube’s 4K60 ingest guidance
YouTube supports 4K/2160p at up to 60 fps. Its current English-language encoder guidance recommends the following bitrates for 4K60; these are YouTube’s published recommendations, not guarantees that a given encoder, connection, or stream key will sustain the stream.
| Codec | YouTube recommended bitrate for 4K60 | Listed minimum |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 35 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| H.264 | 50 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
For streaming, YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals not exceeding four seconds. Configure the encoder in OBS’s output settings, where available, and make sure your sustained upload capacity can support the chosen bitrate plus normal network variation. The current recommendations and settings are in YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Test the stream and confirm YouTube detects it
- Before the real broadcast, test with movement and audio similar to the event. YouTube says to test before starting the live stream and recommends monitoring stream health.
- Check YouTube’s Live Control Room stream-health feedback while sending a private or unlisted test, as appropriate for your setup.
- YouTube normally detects the incoming resolution and frame rate automatically. If YouTube does not detect the intended mode, review the stream-key configuration and Live Control Room settings. YouTube supports custom stream keys with manual stream-resolution settings; see Manage live stream settings.
- Plan for normal latency: YouTube says 4K/2160p streams do not have the low-latency option.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 4K or 60 is missing in OBS Settings > Video | Output settings, OBS setup, or a setup-specific UI constraint | Verify you are checking Output (Scaled) Resolution and Common FPS Value. The exact cause of a missing control depends on OBS version, operating system, active outputs, and setup; the available official guidance does not establish one universal fix. |
| Capture source is blank after selecting 4K60 | Unsupported capture-device mode | Return to the source properties and select a resolution/FPS mode the device supports. |
| Settings are available, but the stream stutters or lags | Rendering or encoding capacity | Reduce FPS or output resolution, simplify the scene, and check OBS performance indicators before attempting 4K60 again. |
| OBS sends the stream, but YouTube reports health or bitrate problems | Encoder configuration or upload stability | Check codec-specific bitrate guidance, CBR, keyframe interval, sustained upload capacity, and YouTube stream health. |
| YouTube does not show the expected resolution or frame rate | Ingest detection or stream-key setup | Allow for automatic detection, then review Live Control Room settings and any custom key’s manual resolution configuration. |
If the standard checks do not explain a missing control, the exact OBS version, operating system, encoder, active outputs, capture-device model, and scene can matter. Provide an OBS log and screenshots of Settings > Video and Settings > Output when asking for setup-specific help.
