The reliable way to find a broken Sims 4 mod is to test the game with all Mods removed, then add files back in batches until the problem returns. Divide the suspect batch and repeat: this is EA’s 50/50 method. Test gameplay Mods before Custom Content, and do not save a test session while your content is disabled.
First check whether a Mod is actually causing the problem
A crash, loading failure, error code, or smaller gameplay glitch does not by itself identify a broken Mod. EA notes that Mod-related problems can have many symptoms, and the issue may remain even after Mods are removed. Use a controlled test rather than guessing from the symptom.

- Record the symptom and game version. Note what happens, when it started, and whether it followed a game update or a particular Mod installation. The game version appears in the lower-left corner of the Main Menu. Include it when contacting a Mod creator for help.
- Check the Mod creator’s compatibility information. A Mod that previously worked can become incompatible after a game update, and an update from its creator may take time. Follow the creator’s current instructions; some Mods may require a full reinstall rather than a simple update. EA does not pre-screen, endorse, or support specific Mods or Custom Content, so use a trusted creator and their support channel.
- Move all Mods out of the Mods folder and launch the game. Check whether the same problem happens with Mods disabled. If it does, Mods are less likely to be the cause; investigate the game or other possible causes instead.
- Exit without saving. Do not save a test session before re-enabling Custom Content and Mods. EA warns that saving while they are disabled may remove content from the saved game.

Use the 50/50 method to isolate a Mod
If the game works without Mods, restore them in controlled groups and test after each addition. When a group makes the problem return, keep that group as the suspect batch and divide it; leave the other files out for now. If the problem does not return after a batch is added, that batch is less likely to contain the cause.

- Customize your Sims’ looks and their home with new family fashion and build items. Give the kids’ bedrooms extra personality, remodel the kitchen to feel homier, and let your Sims express their sporty or artistic sides with new outfits.
- Restore gameplay Mods first. Put a manageable batch back in the Mods folder, launch the game, and check for the same symptom. EA says gameplay Mods are more likely to cause issues than Custom Content.
- Keep the batch that reproduces the issue. Set aside the other files and test the suspect batch again if needed. Track which files are in each group so you know what each test includes.
- Split the suspect batch. Remove about half of its files and test again. If the problem remains, the cause is likely among the files still installed; if it goes away, it is more likely among the files you removed. Swap or divide the groups accordingly and repeat.
- Continue until the suspect is small enough to inspect. The process may lead to one file or a small set of Mods that cause a problem together. Test those files individually where possible, then check each creator’s compatibility notes or support channel.
- Test Custom Content if gameplay Mods do not explain it. Once gameplay Mods have been removed or tested without reproducing the symptom, use the same batch-and-split approach with Custom Content.
EA’s instructions for the batch-and-split process are on its Mods and game updates help page. The 50/50 method narrows the search, but interacting files can mean the cause is a combination rather than one obvious Mod.
What error codes and tools can tell you
Error codes are clues, not a diagnosis
EA says error codes 102, 123, 125, 127, 129, and 131 usually indicate an issue with the game’s script, so a script Mod could be involved. Code 110 usually appears after an update and is caused by outdated Mods. These clues can help prioritize checking script Mods or recently updated files, but they do not name a specific culprit. Reports and utilities may narrow the search
Community troubleshooting discussions mention Better Exceptions and MC Command Center for making last-exception reports easier to inspect, and Sims 4 Tray Importer for identifying Custom Content used on a Sim or build. These tools apply to particular situations and are not guaranteed detectors. EA forum guidance also cautions that conflict detectors have limited accuracy and that a 50/50 test may not always find a Mod problem. Use reports or utilities to choose what to test, then verify with the remove-and-test process.

Check the hub for a newer list before relying on patch-specific information, and use the creator’s support channel for a particular Mod.
