The dependable way to find a Valheim world seed is to read the world metadata or the server’s startup log. If you host the world, download its files or search the server console for Initializing world generator seed:. If you are only a player, try the in-game console with printseeds (or printseed on builds that use that spelling) or press F2. The exact command and file format vary by Valheim version, so use the method that matches your access and keep the original world files together.

Choose the method that matches your access
Your permissions determine which route is practical. A dedicated-server player normally cannot inspect the host’s files, while a host can use every method below. The table is ordered from the most consistently described method to the most version-dependent.

| Method | Who can use it | What you need | Version and reliability notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| World metadata files | Local-world owner or server host with file access | The complete world folder or the matching world files | Most consistently described; legacy worlds use .fwl and .db, while Valheim 1.0 worlds use versioned .fwl2/.db2 files |
| Server console or startup log | Dedicated-server host or administrator | Ability to restart the server or read its log | Search for the exact initialization line; the bracketed number on that line is not the seed |
| In-game console | Player who can launch Valheim with console enabled | Steam launch-option access and a world session | printseeds is reported on several recent builds, but command availability differs by version |
| F2 overlay | Any player whose build displays the value | Only access to the world | Some guides report the seed beside world name, FPS and ping; other builds do not show it |
Player.log |
Player with access to the local log files | Permission to search the Valheim log | Useful on older Steam builds; newer builds may omit the initialization line |
If you are playing on somebody else’s server, ask the host for the seed or ask them to perform one of the host-only checks. A seed is not a password and does not grant administrative access, but it does reveal the procedural layout of the world.
What the Valheim seed controls
Valheim generates the terrain, biomes, coastlines, bosses, dungeons and other procedural locations from a seed chosen when the world is created. The seed is case-sensitive: two strings that differ only in capitalization represent different worlds. Copy it exactly, including upper- and lower-case letters.
The seed is fixed for that world. Changing the text in a server configuration or renaming a file does not convert an existing map to a new seed; a different seed requires creating a new world. Keep a backup before downloading, opening or moving any world data.
Method 1: Read the world metadata files
File inspection is the best option when you own the local world or have a hosting-panel/FTP account for a dedicated server. Stop the server before downloading or copying files so that the world is not being written while you inspect it. On a local game, exit to the menu first and make a backup of the world directory.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Find the world directory on Windows
- Open File Explorer.
- Paste
%userprofile%AppDataLocalLowIronGateValheimworlds_localinto the address bar and press Enter. - If the world was started with a custom
-savedirlaunch argument, open that save directory instead and then itsworlds_localfolder. - Identify the files or folder whose name matches the world. Do not select a similarly named backup unless you know it is the active copy.
Find the world directory on Linux
- Open your file manager or terminal.
- Go to
~/.config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim/worlds_local, or to theworlds_localdirectory beneath the custom path supplied by-savedir. - Match the world name before opening any file, and copy the complete set to a backup location.
Recognize legacy world files
Older worlds are commonly represented by a matching .fwl file and .db file. The .fwl metadata contains the world name and seed; in the layouts documented by multiple guides, the seed appears on the second row. Open a copy with a text-capable editor such as Notepad++ rather than editing the live file in place.
The pairing matters. A lone .fwl without its matching database is not a complete world backup, and changing either filename can prevent Valheim from loading the world. Preserve the original capitalization in the filename and in the seed text.
Handle Valheim 1.0 world folders
Since Valheim 1.0, a world is described as a folder under worlds_local containing versioned files such as _main.<n>.fwl2 and _main.<n>.db2, along with chunk files. Keep the entire folder together when copying it between a computer and a server. Do not rename an .fwl2 file to .fwl; the extensions identify different formats, and a renamed file is not converted.

Because the newer format is versioned, an older guide that tells you to look for one top-level .fwl may not describe your installation. If the folder contains .fwl2/.db2 files, use the current folder as a unit and prefer the server-log or in-game method if a text editor does not display a readable seed.

- Make a read-only copy of the world files.
- Open the legacy
.fwlcopy in Notepad++ and inspect the second row for the seed value. Do not alter line endings, capitalization or other metadata. - For a 1.0 folder, retain every versioned file and use a seed viewer that accepts the current format, or obtain the seed from the server startup line instead.
- Optionally enter the seed into valheim-map.world to check that the generated map resembles the world you recognize. A map viewer is a verification aid, not a replacement for preserving the original save.
If the viewer produces a different coastline or boss layout, first check capitalization and whether you copied the correct world folder. A single changed character creates a different map.
Method 2: Read the dedicated-server console or log
Hosts can usually obtain the seed without opening world files. Restart the dedicated server and watch the startup output while the world loads. Search for:
Initializing world generator seed:
The seed is the code immediately after seed:. A number in parentheses or brackets on the same line is an internal value, not the world seed. Copy only the seed text, preserving case and punctuation.
The same initialization line is written to the server log. If the console scrolls past it, stop the server after the world has loaded and search the newest log for Initializing world generator. Hosting panels commonly expose a live console and a log-download button; the labels differ, but the search text remains the useful part.

Do not confuse a dungeon seed or another generated value with the world seed. The world seed is the value associated with the generator initialization message. If several worlds are configured, confirm the world name in nearby startup lines before copying the value.
Method 3: Try the in-game console
This route is convenient for a player who cannot download the save, but command support has changed between builds. Treat the result as build-dependent and confirm it against the world name or a map viewer.
Enable the console through Steam
- Open your Steam Library and right-click Valheim.
- Choose Properties, then stay on the General tab.
- In Launch Options, enter
-console. - Close the Properties window and launch Valheim normally.
- Join the target world. On a dedicated server, you may need the host’s permission for commands even though the console itself opens.
Run the reported seed command
- Press
F5after you are in the world. - Enter
printseedsand press Enter. Several 2025–2026 guides report this spelling. - If the command is rejected, try
printseed; some guides use the singular spelling. - Read the line labelled world seed. The output can also list dungeon seeds, so do not copy one of those values by mistake.
Command behavior is inconsistent across versions: at least one guide reports that no console command prints the seed and recommends the F2 overlay instead. An “unknown command” response does not mean the world has no seed; it means that your build does not expose that command under that name. Use the file, server-log or F2 method instead.
Administrative commands such as genloc are separate from seed display. Do not run a command merely because it appears beside the seed command in a guide; changing world state or generating locations is unnecessary for looking up a seed.

Press F2 while inside the world. One commonly described interface places the world name and seed in the same diagnostic overlay as FPS and ping. If your overlay shows a seed, copy it exactly and close the panel with F2 again.

Not every build displays the seed in F2. Another set of instructions describes the console as having no seed command and points players to F2, while other versions show only performance and connection data. Therefore, an absent seed on the overlay is a version difference, not evidence that the world is unseeded. Continue with the metadata or log method.
Method 5: Search Player.log
Older Steam installations sometimes record the generator initialization in the local player log. Search the Valheim log files for:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInitializing world generator
A matching line may look like seed:<seed> ( <number> ). The text after seed: is the value to record; the number in parentheses is not the seed. This is an older-Steam troubleshooting route, and newer builds may omit the line entirely. If a search returns nothing, do not edit the log or assume the world is damaged—use the world files or server startup log.
Version and format checks before you copy anything
- Identify the file family. A matching
.fwl/.dbpair indicates the legacy layout; a folder with_main.<n>.fwl2,_main.<n>.db2and chunk files indicates the newer 1.0 layout. - Keep the folder intact. For 1.0 worlds, copy the complete folder rather than extracting one file.
- Do not rename extensions. Renaming
.fwl2to.fwldoes not make an old-format save. - Check capitalization. Seeds are case-sensitive, and two otherwise identical strings with different case generate different worlds.
- Expect command differences. Test
printseeds, thenprintseed, but rely on a file or server log when neither is available. - Record the world name. A host may have several saves; the seed is useful only when paired with the correct world.
Troubleshooting when the seed is not showing
The console says “unknown command”
Confirm that -console is still present in Steam’s Launch Options, start a new game session, and press F5 only after loading into the world. Try both reported spellings, printseeds and printseed. If neither works, use F2 or ask the host to search the startup log. Console availability is version-dependent.
F2 shows FPS and ping but no seed
Your build may not expose the seed in the overlay. Do not infer a blank value or copy another number from the diagnostic panel. Obtain the seed from the world metadata or the server’s generator-initialization line.

You cannot find worlds_local
Check whether Valheim was launched with -savedir; that argument redirects saves away from the default path. On Windows, paste the complete environment-variable path into File Explorer rather than browsing manually. On Linux, include hidden directories in your file manager or use the full path beginning with ~/.config. A dedicated server may store saves under its configured service directory instead of your personal profile.
The files appear unreadable
Use a copy, not the live save, and first determine whether it is an .fwl2 file from a 1.0 world. A newer binary or versioned format may not present the seed as readable rows in a basic editor. In that case, leave the folder untouched and use the server log, F2 or the in-game console. Never convert the file by changing its extension.
The map viewer does not match your world
- Check every character, including capitalization.
- Make sure you selected the active world rather than a backup with a similar name.
- Confirm that the viewer is being given the world seed, not a dungeon seed or the bracketed generator number.
- Verify that the game version and the viewer’s supported format are compatible.
You are a player without host access
You may be unable to download the save or read the server log. Try F2 and the in-game console first. If those options are unavailable, the host or administrator must provide the seed; there is no client-side file path that can reveal a remote server’s private save without access.
How to record and share the seed safely
- Write down the exact seed and the world name together.
- Note where you obtained it—metadata file, startup log, console or F2—so you can recheck a disputed value.
- Preserve capitalization in text messages, screenshots and server configuration fields.
- When moving a world to another machine, transfer the complete save pair or complete 1.0 world folder, not just the seed. The seed alone recreates terrain but does not carry buildings, inventories, explored areas or world progress.
- If you publish the seed for other players, state whether it came from a local save or a dedicated server and identify the Valheim build when known.
Quick decision path
- You host a dedicated server: restart it, copy the value after
Initializing world generator seed:, and verify the world name. If the console is unavailable, search the same text in the server log. - You own a local legacy world: open the matching
.fwlcopy and read the seed on the second row, keeping the matching.dbfile unchanged. - You own a Valheim 1.0 world: keep the entire versioned folder together and prefer the startup log or in-game display if the
.fwl2content is not readable. - You are a player on someone else’s server: try
F2, then enable the console and testprintseeds/printseed; otherwise request the value from the host. - You only have an old local installation: search
Player.logfor the generator line, but treat a missing line as a known version limitation.
Bottom line
Use the world metadata or dedicated-server startup log whenever you can; those methods do not depend on the contested console command. For player-only access, test printseeds, printseed and the F2 overlay in that order, then fall back to the host. Whichever method you use, copy the seed with its exact capitalization, and keep modern .fwl2/.db2 world folders intact.
