How to Fix 0x800070005 on the Xbox App for PC

By VGSources Team 9 min read

If the Xbox app for PC shows 0x800070005 while a Game Pass title installs or updates, first copy the code exactly from the dialog: that five-zero spelling is not defined in Microsoft’s published support material and may be a transcription of the better-known 0x80070005-style Store permission or installation failure. Finish pending Windows updates, update Microsoft Store and Xbox, repair or reset the apps, clear the Store cache, and only then reinstall Gaming Services or Xbox.

What the 0x800070005 message means

The exact string 0x800070005 appears in community reports describing a Windows 10 Xbox app game-update failure. Microsoft does not publish a definitive definition for that five-zero spelling. Treat it as a likely variant or transcription of a 0x80070005-style Microsoft Store/Xbox installation problem, not as a confirmed standalone Microsoft error code.

Before changing anything, write down the code exactly as displayed, including the number of zeros. Also note whether the failure occurs while installing a new game, updating an existing game, signing in, or launching a game. Those details determine how far you need to go: a Store cache reset is a much smaller change than removing and reinstalling a Windows package.

Use this order. It starts with reversible actions and moves toward package or app removal only when the earlier checks fail.

Step What changes Administrator rights Risk to installed games and app data Best match
Restart after Windows Update Completes a pending Windows update cycle No Very low Installation blocked after an update
Update Store, Xbox and Gaming Services Installs available app packages No Very low Install or update failure
Repair Xbox or Microsoft Store Attempts to correct the app without clearing its data No Low App opens but transactions fail
Reset Xbox or Microsoft Store Clears the selected app’s data and settings No Moderate; sign-in may be required again Repair does not help
wsreset.exe Clears the Microsoft Store cache No Low Store pages or downloads behave incorrectly
Reinstall Gaming Services Removes and installs the separate Gaming Services package Yes Moderate; game installation links may need to be rebuilt Xbox cannot install or update games
Reinstall Xbox Removes and installs the Xbox app itself Usually no for Store removal, but follow any prompt Highest; preserve game locations and expect to sign in again The app remains broken after all earlier steps

1. Complete Windows updates and restart

A PC that has downloaded an update but has not restarted can be unable to install Microsoft Store apps. Do not skip the restart simply because Windows reports that the update download is complete.

  1. Open Settings from the Start menu.
  2. Open Windows Update (on some Windows 10 builds this is under Update & Security).
  3. Allow pending updates to finish. If Windows shows Restart required, choose Restart now, or restart from the Start menu after saving your work.
  4. After Windows starts again, open Xbox and retry the same install or update. Record whether the error appears at the same point.

If Windows Update repeatedly requests a restart, complete each requested restart before moving on. A half-finished update can make later Store and Gaming Services repairs appear ineffective.

2. Update Microsoft Store, Xbox and Gaming Services

Update the Store infrastructure and the Xbox components before resetting anything. Microsoft’s Store guidance directs users to the Library and Get updates; the wording also covers the Update to the latest version link that may appear in an error message.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Microsoft Store.
  2. Select Library in the Store navigation.
  3. Select Get updates. If the Store or Xbox message offers Update to the latest version, select that link to reach the Library.
  4. Install every offered update for Microsoft Store, Xbox, and Gaming Services.
  5. When the updates finish, close and reopen Xbox, then retry the failed action.

Do not assume that updating the Xbox app alone updates Gaming Services. Gaming Services is a separate Windows package, so it can remain the failing component even when Xbox looks current.

3. Repair Xbox, then reset it if necessary

Windows provides a repair action that attempts to fix the app without immediately clearing its stored data. Try it before Reset.

Repair the Xbox app

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Find Xbox. On Windows 10, the page may be labeled Apps & features.
  3. Select the three-dot menu next to Xbox, choose Advanced options, and select Repair.
  4. Wait for Windows to finish. Open Xbox and test the same download, update, or launch operation.

Reset the Xbox app

If Repair changes nothing, return to the same Advanced options page and choose Reset. Reset clears the Xbox app’s local data and settings. You may need to sign in to your Microsoft account again and recheck where games are installed.

Reset only Xbox first. If Xbox works after its reset but Microsoft Store still fails to open pages or complete downloads, repeat the Repair-then-Reset sequence for Microsoft Store from Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Microsoft Store → Advanced options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Clear the Microsoft Store cache with wsreset.exe

A damaged Store cache can prevent an otherwise valid Xbox transaction from starting or finishing. The built-in cache reset does not require an elevated command window.

  1. Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Enter wsreset.exe and select OK.
  3. Wait while a blank Command Prompt window appears. Microsoft says it closes automatically after about ten seconds, and Microsoft Store then opens by itself.
  4. When Store reopens, wait for its page to load, return to Library, and retry the Xbox game installation or update.

Do not close the blank window during the short reset unless it remains open far longer than expected. If Store does not open automatically, launch it from Start and test again.

5. Reinstall Gaming Services

Use this step when Xbox still cannot install or update games after the Store and app repairs. Gaming Services is separate from the Xbox user interface, and removing its package requires an elevated PowerShell session. Close Xbox and Microsoft Store first.

Remove the existing package

  1. Open Start and type PowerShell.
  2. Right-click Windows PowerShell and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  3. Run this command exactly:
get-appxpackage Microsoft.GamingServices | remove-AppxPackage -allusers

Wait for the command to return to the prompt. If PowerShell reports an error, copy the complete message rather than repeatedly running the command; the text can show whether the package was absent, in use, or blocked by permissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install Gaming Services again

  1. In the same PowerShell window, run:
start ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MWPM2CQNLHN
  1. When the Microsoft Store product page opens, choose the option to install Gaming Services.
  2. Restart Windows after installation completes.
  3. Open Xbox, allow it to finish any first-run setup, and retry the exact game install or update that failed.

This package reinstall is broader than clearing a cache. It can require Xbox to reconnect game services and may make you wait while the Store rebuilds its registration. It does not by itself prove that the game files are damaged; the failure can still be caused by account authorization, region, compatibility, or another Store condition.

6. Reinstall the Xbox app only as a last resort

Reinstall Xbox after updating, repairing or resetting the apps, clearing the Store cache, and reinstalling Gaming Services. Removing the app too early can add sign-in and library setup work without addressing a Store or Gaming Services fault.

Before removing Xbox

  • Note the drive and folder used for installed games, especially if you use a custom library location.
  • Confirm that the failure is in the Xbox app rather than only Microsoft Store or Gaming Services.
  • Make sure you know the Microsoft account used for the subscription and game ownership.
  • Record the Xbox and Gaming Services versions and the exact wording of the error.

Remove and install Xbox

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Find Xbox, open its three-dot menu, and choose Uninstall. Confirm any prompt.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Open Microsoft Store and select Library → Get updates first, then search for Xbox and install it. The Store product identifier used in Microsoft’s Q&A reinstall sequence is 9MV0B5HZVK9Z; use the Store listing rather than downloading an installer from an untrusted site.
  5. Sign in with the account that owns the subscription or game, verify the library location, and retry the installation or update.

If a game appears as uninstalled after Xbox returns, do not immediately delete its existing folder. Check whether Xbox can detect or verify the files through its normal install flow. The exact behavior depends on the game and storage location.

7. Check account, region, family settings and compatibility

Not every Store or Xbox failure is a corrupted app. Microsoft identifies several conditions that can prevent an app from appearing or installing even when the software itself is functioning.

  • Microsoft-account authorization: Confirm that Microsoft Store and Xbox are signed in to the account that has the game license or subscription. If you reset an app, sign in again before testing.
  • Region availability: A game or app may not be offered in the region configured for your account or device. Check the Windows region and the Store listing rather than assuming that every title is available everywhere.
  • Family settings: Family restrictions can hide an app or block an install. The family organizer may need to approve the title or adjust the applicable setting.
  • Device compatibility: Hardware, Windows edition, or other requirements can prevent installation. If the Store marks the device as incompatible, reinstalling Xbox will not override that decision.
  • Pending restart: A restart required after Windows or app updates can leave Store transactions blocked until it is completed.

These checks are particularly important when the error occurs before a download begins, when the game is missing from the library, or when only one account or one PC is affected.

8. Match the next action to the symptom

Download fails at the end

Complete the restart, Store/Xbox update, Xbox Repair, and wsreset.exe steps first. If the download repeatedly reaches the end and then fails, move to Gaming Services reinstallation before removing Xbox.

A game will not update, but new installs work

Update Gaming Services and Xbox from Store Library → Get updates, then repair Xbox. An update-only failure can be tied to the existing game registration, so note the title, drive, and exact stage at which it stops.

Xbox opens, but sign-in or the library is wrong

Do not jump to PowerShell. Check the Microsoft account, sign out and back in if needed, and verify family and region settings. Resetting Xbox can clear local sign-in state, but it cannot grant an account a license it does not have.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The error appears when launching rather than installing

Record whether Microsoft Store and Xbox are both current, then repair Xbox. If only one game launches incorrectly, preserve its installation and account details before considering a full app reinstall; the five-zero code alone does not establish that every game file must be removed.

Gaming Services keeps reinstalling

Run the removal command in an elevated PowerShell window, install Gaming Services from the Store product page, restart Windows, and test again. If the package installation itself fails, capture the PowerShell output and Store message for support instead of cycling through repeated removals.

9. Verify the result after each change

Testing one change at a time makes it possible to identify the component that fixed the problem and avoids unnecessary reinstalls.

  1. Use the same Microsoft account and the same game that originally produced the error.
  2. Repeat the same operation: install, update, or launch. Do not switch tasks between tests.
  3. Wait for the transaction to move beyond the point where it previously failed.
  4. If it succeeds, note the step that preceded success and avoid additional resets.
  5. If it fails, record the new message and continue to the next step in the sequence.

A successful Store cache reset, for example, does not prove that Gaming Services was healthy; it only shows that the tested transaction completed after the cache was rebuilt. Keep the distinction in your notes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Escalate with a useful report

Contact Microsoft or Xbox Support when the error remains after the sequence, when PowerShell cannot remove or reinstall Gaming Services, or when the Store reports an account, region, or compatibility block that you cannot resolve.

Include:

  • The exact code spelling, including whether it is 0x800070005 or another variant.
  • Windows edition and build, plus whether the PC is running Windows 10 or Windows 11.
  • Xbox, Microsoft Store, and Gaming Services versions.
  • The game title and whether the failure is during installation, update, sign-in, or launch.
  • The point of failure, such as immediately, near the end of a download, or after a restart.
  • Each completed action: updates, Repair, Reset, wsreset.exe, Gaming Services reinstall, and Xbox reinstall.
  • Any complete PowerShell or Store error text, without editing the wording.

This information helps support distinguish a malformed code transcription from a repeatable Store, account, package, or compatibility problem.
