The correct fix depends on where the download is happening. Console users should start with network checks and Xbox Support guidance; Windows users should troubleshoot the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, Gaming Services, storage, account, and network settings.
Confirm the code and the platform
Do not change system settings until you have copied the complete message from the screen. The string commonly typed as “0X800070057 Xbox download” is usually 0x80070057. The longer version may be a transcription error, but a different on-screen code can require a different procedure.

The table is a decision point, not a promise that the code has one universal cause. Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting material associates 0x80070057 with corrupted files, permission problems, or incorrect configuration, but that Windows explanation does not establish the cause on every Xbox device.

Fix 0x80070057 on an Xbox console
1. Verify the displayed error
Write down the exact code, the game or app name, and whether the failure occurs while starting, resuming, or installing a download. If the console displays a different code than 0x80070057, use that code when contacting Xbox Support rather than forcing this procedure.
2. Check the console’s network connection
Xbox’s Series S service guidance supports either a Wi-Fi connection or an Ethernet cable. If you normally use Wi-Fi, test a wired Ethernet connection when practical. A wired retry can separate a wireless reliability problem from an installation problem; it is a diagnostic comparison, not proof that the code itself is a network error.
- Connect the console to a known-working Wi-Fi network, or connect an Ethernet cable directly to the network equipment.
- Confirm that the console reports an active connection before starting the download again.
- Retry the same download once. Note whether it fails immediately, reaches a particular percentage, or completes.
3. Restart before repeating the attempt
After changing the connection, restart the console and try the download again. A restart clears a stalled transfer state; it does not erase the game or establish that the underlying cause was fixed.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Use Xbox Support for a persistent console error
Microsoft directs console users with game or app installation problems to Xbox Support. Take the code, the console model, the title being installed, the connection type, and the result of the Wi-Fi-versus-Ethernet test with you. That information lets support distinguish a local connection failure from an account, service, or title-specific problem.
Do not run the Windows Gaming Services PowerShell commands in this article on a console. They target Windows app packages and are not a console repair procedure.

1. Install pending Windows updates
Open Settings, choose Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install the updates offered for your edition of Windows. Restart when Windows requests it, then retry the download. An update can replace a damaged component or correct a compatibility problem, but the error can also remain after Windows is current.
2. Update Microsoft Store
Open Microsoft Store, select Library, and choose Get updates (the label can vary slightly by Windows release). Allow Store and Xbox-related components to finish updating. Close and reopen the Store and Xbox app before trying the installation again.
3. Confirm free storage on the destination drive
Check the free space on the drive selected for the game or app. In Windows, open Settings > System > Storage and review the available capacity. Also check the Xbox app’s installation location if it differs from the system drive. A download can fail when there is not enough room for both the package and temporary installation files, even when the advertised game size appears to fit.
Do not treat deleting random files as a guaranteed fix. Remove or move data only when you know what it is, and leave room for the download plus the installation process.
4. Make the Microsoft account consistent
The account used by Microsoft Store should match the account used by the Xbox app for the purchase, subscription, or Game Pass entitlement. Open the account menu in each app and compare the signed-in address. If they differ, sign out and sign back in with the account that owns the game or subscription. A mismatch can make an installation appear available in one app while the package request is rejected by the other.

Record which account owns the entitlement before signing out. If you use multiple Windows profiles, repeat the check in the profile where the download is being attempted.

5. Check firewall and proxy access
Microsoft Learn notes that blocked firewall or proxy endpoints can stop Microsoft Store app packages from downloading or updating. If the download fails on one network but works on another, that difference is useful evidence.
- Temporarily test from a trusted network that does not use the same managed proxy, such as a home connection instead of a restricted workplace network.
- Review Windows proxy settings under Settings > Network & internet > Proxy. If a proxy is required by your organization, do not remove it without the administrator’s approval.
- Check firewall rules for Microsoft Store and Xbox traffic. Do not broadly disable firewall protection as a first step; ask the network administrator to allow the required Microsoft endpoints when the device is managed.
A successful download on a different network points toward filtering or proxy policy, while failure everywhere suggests that the app, account, storage, or Gaming Services branch deserves more attention.
Repair, reset, or reinstall the Xbox app
Windows provides repair and reset controls for Store apps. These controls affect the app, not the ownership of a game, but reset can remove locally stored app data and sign-in state.
Recommended Free Tools
Repair first
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Xbox, select its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, wait for Windows to finish, and open the Xbox app.
- Retry the download and record whether the error code changes.
Repair is the lower-impact option because it attempts to correct the app without clearing all of its stored data.
Reset if repair does not help
Return to the same Advanced options page and choose Reset. Read the Windows warning before confirming. Afterward, launch the Xbox app, sign in with the account that owns the entitlement, and retry the installation.
Reinstall the Xbox app as a later fallback
A June 2025 Microsoft Community response suggested reinstalling the Xbox app among its fallback diagnostics. Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps, remove the Xbox app, restart Windows, then install the current Xbox app from Microsoft Store. Reinstalling is more disruptive than repair or reset, so use it after checking updates, storage, account, and network access.

Reinstall Gaming Services only as a Windows fallback
Gaming Services is a Windows component used by Xbox and Microsoft Store game installations. A Microsoft Q&A answer reported the following sequence for a 0x80070057 Game Pass installation failure in 2020. It is community-reported guidance, not a guaranteed universal fix or a replacement for current Xbox Support instructions.
Before you run the commands
- Use this section only on Windows, not on an Xbox console.
- Save work and close the Xbox app and Microsoft Store.
- Use administrator PowerShell only if you understand that the first command removes the Gaming Services package for all Windows users.
- Keep your Microsoft account details available because you may need to sign in again.
Remove and reinstall Gaming Services
- Open PowerShell with Run as administrator.
- Enter this command exactly, then press Enter:
get-appxpackage Microsoft.GamingServices | remove-AppxPackage -allusers - When the command finishes, run:
start ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MWPM2CQNLHN - Microsoft Store should open to the Gaming Services listing. Select the install option and let it complete.
- Restart Windows before opening the Xbox app and retrying the download.
The command may return an error if Gaming Services is already absent or if PowerShell was not elevated. Do not repeatedly run removal commands. If the Store page does not open, paste the URI into the Windows Run dialog or open Microsoft Store manually and search for Gaming Services; the URI is the direct product route reported in the Q&A guidance.
If reinstalling Gaming Services does not change the result, stop escalating command-line changes and return to the account, storage, network, and app-repair checks. A failed workaround does not prove that Windows is corrupted.
Check date and time settings
The June 2025 Microsoft Community response also suggested checking date and time. Incorrect clock settings can interfere with sign-in and service validation.
- Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Enable automatic time and automatic time-zone selection when those options are appropriate for your location.
- Use Sync now if Windows provides it.
- Restart the Xbox app and retry the download.
If the PC is managed by an organization, follow its time policy rather than forcing a manual setting.

Use the result of each retry to choose the next branch
| Result after a retry | Most useful next action |
|---|---|
| Works after Ethernet or a different network | Investigate Wi-Fi reliability, proxy rules, or firewall filtering on the original network. |
| Works after Windows or Store updates | Keep the system and Store current; no further repair is needed unless the error returns. |
| Works after matching the Store and Xbox accounts | Continue using the account that owns the entitlement and avoid switching accounts during installation. |
| Works after repair or reset | Recheck app sign-in and installation location before starting another large download. |
| Works after Gaming Services reinstall | Leave the component installed, restart once more if requested, and avoid repeating the removal command. |
| Fails on both console and Windows for the same title | Record the exact code and contact the relevant Xbox Support channel; a local Windows repair cannot establish a service-side or title-side cause. |
No published success-rate statistic establishes that one of these steps fixes a particular percentage of 0x80070057 cases. Treat each change as a diagnostic step and keep notes rather than making several changes at once.
Safety and common mistakes
- Do not confuse the typo with a new error. Confirm whether the screen says 0x80070057 before searching for fixes.
- Do not use Windows commands on a console. The Gaming Services package exists in Windows, not as a console repair target.
- Do not remove firewall protection broadly. Ask an administrator to permit the required Microsoft endpoints when a proxy or managed firewall is involved.
- Do not reset before recording your account. Reset can clear app data and require another sign-in.
- Do not assume the code proves malware or a failing console. Microsoft’s Windows description covers several possible causes, and the code alone does not identify one.
- Do not keep repeating a failed workaround. Once a step has produced no change, move to the next evidence-based branch or contact support.
When to stop troubleshooting locally
Use Xbox Support when the problem is on a console, when the exact code differs from 0x80070057, or when a download still fails after the appropriate platform checks. For Windows, escalate when updates, Store access, storage, account consistency, network access, app repair, and the carefully controlled Gaming Services fallback have all been checked. Include the platform, Windows edition if applicable, game or app title, exact code, account state, network type, and the last step that changed the behavior. That evidence is more useful than reporting only that “Xbox will not download.”
As an optional shortcut on Windows, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL files, settings that increase CPU, RAM, or disk load, temporary and cache files, privacy warnings, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding, and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; a free trial by category lasts at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements an antivirus and does not replace one, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
Bottom line
Normalize the message to 0x80070057, then follow the branch for your platform. On a console, test Wi-Fi and Ethernet, restart, retry, and use Xbox Support for a persistent installation error. In Windows, update Windows and Microsoft Store, verify storage and the Microsoft account, investigate firewall or proxy blocking, repair or reset the Xbox app, and reserve the administrator PowerShell Gaming Services reinstall for a documented fallback. Restart before the final retry and keep the exact code and results of each test for support.
