How to Fix “0X800070422” Troubleshooting Update: Check the Code, Avoid the Scam, Repair Windows Update

0X800070422 is probably not the Windows Update code you need to repair. The exact string is not established in Microsoft’s Windows Update documentation. It has appeared in browser pages that claim a computer has a virus and demand a phone call, which is a strong tech-support-scam signal. The documented Windows Update code that looks similar is 0x80070422: Microsoft defines it as “Windows Update service is disabled or stopped.”

If the message appeared in Windows Settings or during a normal update check, work through the 0x80070422 repair steps below. If it appeared in a browser with a phone number, do not call the number; close the page and treat the warning as a scam page rather than proof of infection.

First, identify which problem you actually have

The location and wording of the message matter more than the characters alone. Microsoft’s documented code is 0x80070422. The extra zero in 0x800070422 may be a typing or transcription error, but a browser scare page can also display an invented-looking code to make an urgent warning appear official.

What you saw Most likely interpretation What to do
Windows Settings or Windows Update showed 0x80070422 while checking for updates The Windows Update service is disabled or stopped Enable the service, restart the computer, and run the Windows Update troubleshooter
A browser tab showed 0X800070422, claimed you had a virus, or displayed a phone number Likely a tech-support scam page; the code is not proof of infection Do not call, pay, install software at the caller’s direction, or give remote access. Close the page
The wording is unclear and you cannot find an update failure in Settings The code may have been misread, copied incorrectly, or generated by a web page Verify the source of the message before changing Windows services

Microsoft Q&A records a report in which the user saw “the error code that it said was this: 0x800070422” on a browser page claiming the computer had a virus. The report also notes that the similar code the user could find was 0x80070422. That account does not establish 0x800070422 as a genuine Windows error. Read the Microsoft Q&A report.

If a browser tells you to call: handle it as a scam warning

A legitimate Windows Update failure does not require you to phone a number shown in a random web page. A demand to call immediately, pay for help, or allow remote control is an especially important warning sign. The page may use full-screen mode, a repeating alarm, or a fake Microsoft-style message, but those presentation tricks do not authenticate it.

  1. Do not call the displayed number. Do not confirm your name, payment details, Windows activation information, or one-time codes.
  2. Do not install a program at the caller’s request. Do not grant remote-desktop access or allow the person to browse your files.
  3. Close the tab or browser window. If the page resists normal closing, use the browser’s task entry in Windows Task Manager to end the browser, then reopen it without restoring the suspicious tab.
  4. Use trusted Windows controls to check for a real update problem. Open Settings and check Windows Update directly rather than following links or instructions on the warning page.

Do not disable security software or edit the registry as a first response to an unexplained browser warning. The pop-up itself is not evidence that your computer is infected. If you already called, paid, installed a remote-access tool, or shared credentials, disconnect the affected computer from the internet, remove the remote-access program if you can do so safely, change exposed passwords from a separate trusted device, and contact the relevant payment provider.

How to fix the documented 0x80070422 Windows Update error

These steps follow Microsoft’s supported sequence. You need an account that can change Windows service settings. Save open work before restarting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Open the Windows Services console

  1. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type services.msc and press Enter.
  3. If Windows asks for permission through User Account Control, choose Yes if you intended to open the Services console.

The Services window lists background services and their current states. Do not change unrelated services while troubleshooting this error.

2. Set Windows Update to start automatically

  1. Find Windows Update in the list.
  2. Double-click it, or right-click it and choose Properties.
  3. In Startup type, select Automatic.
  4. Look at Service status. If it says Stopped, click Start.
  5. Click Apply, then OK.

Microsoft’s description of 0x80070422 is “Windows Update service is disabled or stopped.” Therefore, this service check is the most direct repair when the code appears during an update operation. If the service is already running and set to Automatic, continue with the next step instead of repeatedly changing the setting.

3. Restart Windows and check for updates

  1. Restart the computer from the Windows power menu.
  2. After signing in, open Settings.
  3. Go to the Windows Update page for your edition of Windows and choose Check for updates.
  4. Allow the check to complete. If an update is offered, leave the computer connected to power and do not interrupt the restart stages.

If the update now works, the stopped or disabled service was the immediate cause. If the same error returns, use the built-in troubleshooter.

4. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  3. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  4. Follow the instructions Windows presents, then restart if it requests one.
  5. Return to Windows Update and choose Check for updates again.

The troubleshooter is useful when the service is enabled but another update component is preventing the check or installation from completing. Record any message it reports before closing the window; that detail can distinguish a service problem from a damaged update cache.

5. Reset the Windows Update download cache when it is corrupted

Microsoft’s next supported procedure is to stop Windows Update, remove the contents of the SoftwareDistribution folder, and start Windows Update again. This removes the cached update files in that folder; it does not require deleting the entire Windows directory.

  1. Press Win + R, enter services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Windows Update, open Properties, and click Stop if the service is running. Choose Apply if necessary.
  3. Open File Explorer and go to C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution.
  4. Delete the contents inside SoftwareDistribution. Leave the folder itself in place. If Windows says a file is in use, return to Services and confirm that Windows Update is stopped before trying again.
  5. Return to the Services console, open Windows Update again, and click Start. Set Startup type to Automatic if it is not already set, then click Apply and OK.
  6. Restart the computer and run Windows Update from Settings.

Windows may need to download update files again after this cache reset, so the next check can take longer than usual. Do not remove files from other system folders while carrying out this procedure.

What to check if 0x80070422 still appears

Confirm that you repaired the service Windows is actually using

Reopen services.msc and check the entry named exactly Windows Update. Verify both conditions: the service status is running and the startup type is Automatic. A service that was started manually but remains configured not to start automatically can stop again after a restart.

Separate a Windows error from a web-page message

If Settings no longer shows an update failure but the same code keeps appearing in a browser, the two events are not the same problem. Stop following the browser page’s instructions. Close it, open Windows Update directly from Settings, and use only Microsoft’s built-in troubleshooting path.

Do not use risky “quick fixes”

  • Do not edit the registry merely because a pop-up displays a hexadecimal code.
  • Do not turn off security software to make a suspicious page disappear.
  • Do not download an unrequested “support” utility from a warning page.
  • Do not give a caller remote access to resolve an update code.

Those actions can create a new security or system problem while doing nothing to repair Windows Update.

When the documented sequence is not enough

If the service is running, the troubleshooter completes without resolving the issue, and the cache reset does not help, keep the exact message shown in Windows Settings and the time it occurred. The string 0x800070422 itself is not documented by the Microsoft update page, so a precise screenshot or transcription is important. Use Microsoft’s official Windows support channels rather than a phone number supplied by a browser advertisement or scare page.

Which symptom matches your case?

Question Windows Update failure Browser scam signal
Where does it appear? Settings or the Windows Update interface A web page or unexpected browser tab
Is there a phone number? No phone demand is part of the documented code meaning Often yes; treat it as a scam signal
What service should you inspect? Windows Update in services.msc None based solely on the page; first close it and verify Windows Update separately
What is the documented code? 0x80070422 0x800070422 is not established in the reviewed Microsoft update documentation
Best first action Set Windows Update to Automatic, start it, restart, and check again Do not call or pay; close the page and use trusted Windows controls

As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can check for and repair some common Windows issues, adjust settings, clean temporary and cache files, provide privacy and vulnerability checks, and show an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; a free trial by category lasts at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and results vary—no tool repairs every crash.
