“0x8007” is only the beginning of a Windows error code, not a diagnosis. Copy the complete code shown by DISM—such as 0x800f081f, 0x80070005 or 0x80070570—then run the repair sequence from an elevated Command Prompt: DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth, followed by sfc /scannow. If DISM cannot find source files, provide matching Windows installation media or another known-good source with /Source and, when necessary, /LimitAccess.

Why the complete code matters

DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management) repairs the Windows component store and supplies files that Windows uses to repair protected system files. Microsoft’s normal online repair command is:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

The prefix 0x8007 appears in several unrelated Windows errors. The characters after that prefix identify what prevented the repair. Choosing a remedy from the prefix alone can send you toward the wrong fix, so first record the entire code and the exact message in the Command Prompt window or Windows Update history.

Common suffixes and their likely meaning

Full code Microsoft’s mapping First priority
0x800f081f The source files required for repair are missing. Use a valid, matching repair source and run DISM with /Source.
0x80070005 Access is denied. Confirm an elevated shell, then inspect the CBS log for the object denied access.
0x80070570 A file or directory is corrupted. Check the repair source and the component store; do not keep retrying a damaged source.

These mappings narrow the investigation but do not prove the cause on every computer. Note your Windows edition, language, architecture and build as well as the full code; those details determine whether installation media can repair the installed image.

Prepare safely before repairing Windows

  • Back up important files. DISM and SFC are built-in repair tools, but they modify Windows components. Keep a current backup before changing system files.
  • Record the environment. Press Windows key + R, enter winver, and write down the edition and build. Also note whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit and the language installed.
  • Use an administrator account. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, select Run as administrator, and approve the User Account Control prompt.
  • Keep the connection stable. The default repair source is Windows Update, so an interrupted or blocked connection can make a healthy command appear to fail.
  • Do not close the window early. Microsoft says the RestoreHealth operation may take several minutes. Progress can pause while the component store is checked.

Run the standard DISM and SFC sequence

This is the correct first path for an online, currently running Windows installation. DISM repairs the component store first; SFC then uses that repaired store to replace protected system files.

  1. Start the elevated Command Prompt. The title bar should indicate that the window has administrator privileges. A non-elevated prompt commonly produces access errors.
  2. Run DISM. Enter the command exactly as shown and press Enter:
    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

The /Online switch targets the Windows installation that is currently running. /Cleanup-image tells DISM to service the component store, and /Restorehealth asks it to detect and repair corruption.

  3. Wait for completion. Leave the computer powered on and allow the verification and repair stages to finish. If DISM reports that the operation completed successfully, continue to SFC even if Windows had displayed other symptoms.
  4. Run System File Checker. In the same elevated window, enter:
    sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. SFC repairs protected operating-system files after DISM has repaired the source it relies on.

  5. Restart Windows. A restart loads repaired components and clears files that were in use during the operation.
  6. Retry the original operation. If Windows Update triggered the error, check for updates again after restarting. If another application or Windows feature produced the message, repeat that operation and record any new code.

Do not substitute SFC for DISM when the component store itself is damaged. SFC can report that it found corruption but could not fix some files when its repair source is still unhealthy.

Fix “source files could not be found” errors

DISM normally obtains repair content through Windows Update. When that service is unavailable, blocked, or does not contain the exact files your installation needs, supply a known-good Windows source yourself. Microsoft documents local files, a network share, a mounted image and removable installation media as possible sources.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a local or mounted source

  1. Obtain Windows installation media that matches the installed image’s edition, language, architecture and build. An arbitrary ISO or USB is not guaranteed to be compatible.
  2. Mount the ISO in File Explorer or connect the removable media. Identify the folder that contains the Windows source files. If you copied a source to the drive, make a note of its complete path.
  3. From an elevated Command Prompt, run the documented pattern below, replacing the example path with the actual Windows folder in your source:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

/Source tells DISM where to look for repair files. /LimitAccess prevents DISM from contacting Windows Update, which is useful when you want the specified local or network source used without an online fallback. Do not leave the example path unchanged unless that folder really exists.

Use a network share

A known-good Windows source on a network share can be used in the same way. Confirm that the administrator account running Command Prompt can read the share and that the connection will remain available for the whole operation. Replace the /Source value with the share’s actual Windows source path, then retain /LimitAccess if Windows Update must not be used.

Check compatibility before retrying

  • Edition: Home, Pro, Enterprise and other editions can contain different component sets.
  • Language: A source in a different display language may not contain the required files.
  • Architecture: 64-bit and 32-bit images are not interchangeable.
  • Build: A source from another Windows build can be too old or too new for the installed component store.
  • Integrity: If the media or share is damaged, DISM can return another corruption or missing-source error.

When a properly matched source still cannot repair the image, Microsoft’s guidance is that a non-repairable image should be discarded and started again rather than repeatedly reused as though it were sound.

Choose the next step from the full error code

0x800f081f: missing source content

This code points to missing repair content. First retry the standard command with a stable internet connection. If Windows Update cannot provide the files, use the matching local, mounted, removable or network source described above. Keep /LimitAccess in the command when you need to force DISM to use that source. Recheck the source’s edition, language, architecture and build before replacing the media.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

0x80070005: access denied

Verify that Command Prompt was opened with Run as administrator and that the account can read the selected source. Then inspect the component servicing log around the time of failure:

%Windir%logsCBSCBS.log

Open the log in a text editor and search near the failure timestamp for access-denied entries. The object or path named there can distinguish a permissions problem from a missing source. Avoid changing permissions broadly just to make DISM run; identify the denied object first and preserve Windows’ normal servicing security.

0x80070570: corrupted file or directory

This mapping indicates corruption in a file or directory involved in the operation. Confirm that the source media or network copy is known-good, reconnect removable media if its connection is unstable, and retry with a matching source. If the same source repeatedly produces the code, replace it rather than treating repeated retries as a repair.

When Windows Update is part of the failure

DISM’s default source is Windows Update, so update-service problems can prevent a repair even when the command is typed correctly. After DISM and SFC complete and you restart, retry Windows Update with a stable connection and administrator access available. If the update-related failure continues, Microsoft also recommends addressing a corrupt SoftwareDistribution cache as part of Windows Update troubleshooting. Do not delete or rename service data casually while an update is running; follow Microsoft’s Windows Update recovery procedure for your Windows version and make sure update services are stopped when that procedure requires it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you deliberately want to avoid Windows Update, use the matching /Source command with /LimitAccess rather than allowing DISM to alternate between an unavailable online source and an unverified local source.

Online repair versus an offline image

The standard command above services the running installation because it uses /Online. An offline repair targets a Windows image that is not currently booted, such as an installation on another drive or a mounted image. Offline servicing requires the correct image path and a source that matches that image; do not apply the online command to an offline target or assume that a source suitable for one installation is suitable for another.

For most people seeing “DISM RestoreHealth failed” on their everyday PC, finish the online DISM-and-SFC sequence first. Move to offline servicing only when you are intentionally repairing a separate image and have identified its path and build.

Common mistakes that create another failure

  • Using only “0x8007” as the diagnosis: several suffixes share that prefix. Copy the complete code before choosing a fix.
  • Running SFC first: SFC depends on a healthy component store. Run DISM first, then SFC.
  • Opening a normal Command Prompt: administrative operations can fail with access denied in a non-elevated window.
  • Pointing to the wrong folder: /Source must identify the Windows source, not merely the root of an empty USB drive or an unrelated ISO.
  • Mixing builds or editions: installation media that boots your PC is not automatically a valid repair source for its installed image.
  • Forcing an online fallback unintentionally: add /LimitAccess when the specified source must be used without Windows Update.
  • Stopping at a stalled percentage: DISM may take several minutes. Interrupting it can leave the repair incomplete.
  • Repeating a damaged source: a corrupt ISO, USB or network copy will not become valid through repeated attempts.

What to do if the repair still fails

  1. Restart once more if the first restart occurred before SFC reached 100 percent.
  2. Record the new complete error code and the exact command that produced it; a changed suffix can indicate that the first problem was resolved and a different one is now exposed.
  3. Review %Windir%logsCBSCBS.log around the failure timestamp, especially for access-denied, missing-source or corruption entries.
  4. Validate the repair source against edition, language, architecture and build rather than trying several unverified media files.
  5. If the image is reported as non-repairable, stop reusing that image as a source. Microsoft advises discarding a non-repairable image and starting again.
  6. After a successful repair and restart, retry Windows Update or the Windows feature that originally failed. Keep the original code and the successful command in your notes in case the problem returns.

As an optional shortcut after the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, while also offering settings tweaks, temporary-file cleanup, privacy tools, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredder and crash log. Bottom line

Copy the full code after 0x8007, run elevated DISM, follow it with SFC, restart, and retry Windows Update. For 0x800f081f, concentrate on a matching repair source; for 0x80070005, investigate elevation and the CBS log; for 0x80070570, replace a corrupted source or directory. Use /LimitAccess only when you need DISM to rely on the specified source instead of Windows Update.
