How to Fix “0x800700422” Xbox Installer Access-Denied Errors

If an Xbox or Microsoft Store dialog shows 0x800700422, do not assume that it is an established “access denied” code. The reviewed Microsoft and Xbox documentation does not define that exact hexadecimal string. First copy the code directly from the dialog and record whether it appeared in Xbox, Microsoft Store, or App Installer. A single mistyped digit can point to a different failure; Microsoft’s documented MSIX access-denied example is 0x80070005, which is not the same code.

After confirming the message, work through the least disruptive fixes: install pending Windows and Store updates, restart, repair or reset the affected apps, reinstall an app only when necessary, then investigate package dependencies, network filtering, and the game-install drive. Keep the original code and diagnostic events if you need Microsoft or Xbox Support.

What “0x800700422” tells you—and what it does not

The exact string 0x800700422 is not identified in the official Microsoft/Xbox material reviewed for this problem. That means no reliable cause can be assigned to it yet. The message may contain a transcription error, or it may be an internal value that is not documented publicly. Treat the digits as unconfirmed until you read them from the original dialog rather than from memory, a screenshot transcription, or a copied post.

Microsoft documentation does identify 0x80070005 as an access-denied example for MSIX package installation. It is easy to confuse the two strings because both are hexadecimal and both can appear in installation discussions, but they must not be treated as equivalent. A repair that is appropriate for one code may not explain the other.

What is known Practical implication
The reviewed official sources do not define 0x800700422. Verify every digit and collect context before choosing a code-specific fix.
0x80070005 is a documented MSIX access-denied example. Do not replace the reported code with 0x80070005 when contacting support.
Xbox, Microsoft Store, and App Installer can report different stages of an installation. Identify which application displayed the dialog; the next diagnostic step depends on that layer.

Record the failure before changing Windows

Write down the complete hexadecimal value exactly as displayed, including any additional text. Then capture the details below. This information distinguishes an app-state problem from a package, network, or destination-drive problem and gives support staff something reproducible to analyze.

  • Displayed code and wording: copy the entire dialog or take a screenshot.
  • Reporting application: note whether the dialog came from the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, or App Installer.
  • Game or package: record the title you were installing and whether it was a new installation, an update, or a retry.
  • Windows version and build: open Windows Settings and record the version shown under the system information page.
  • Destination drive: note the drive letter or storage location selected for the game.
  • Timing: record whether the error appeared while downloading, while installing, or immediately after selecting Install.

Do not delete the screenshot after the error disappears. If the code is later shown to be different, the original image prevents a second transcription mistake.

Run the supported low-risk sequence first

Microsoft’s normal Store-app sequence is update, restart, repair or reset, reinstall when needed, and then the Store Apps troubleshooter. Perform it in that order so that a reversible action is not replaced prematurely by a disruptive one. Windows labels can vary slightly by release, but the following paths describe the current Settings layout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Install pending Windows and Microsoft Store updates

  1. Open Settings and go to Windows Update. Select Check for updates, install everything offered, and allow any requested restart.
  2. Open Microsoft Store. Select Library, then use Get updates (or the equivalent update control shown in your Store build) so the Store and its components are current.
  3. Restart Windows even if no update explicitly asks for it. Microsoft notes that a recent Windows update can require a restart before Store apps can be installed.

After the restart, try the same game and the same destination drive once. If the exact dialog returns, continue rather than repeatedly clicking Install; repeated attempts do not establish whether the package, app state, or drive is responsible.

2. Repair the Xbox app and Microsoft Store

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find Xbox, open its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options.
  3. Select Repair. This is the first app-state action and does not require removing the app.
  4. Retry the installation. If the same failure remains, return to the Xbox app’s Advanced options and select Reset.
  5. Repeat the same Repair, then—if necessary—Reset sequence for Microsoft Store in the Installed apps list.

Repair and reset are separate choices. Use Repair before Reset, and test after each one so you know which change affected the result. If only the Store shows the error, start with the Store; if only Xbox shows it, start with Xbox. When both applications fail, repair or reset both before moving to reinstall.

3. Reinstall the affected application only when reset does not help

If Xbox or Microsoft Store still fails after repair and reset, reinstall the affected app through the supported Microsoft Store path. Remove and reinstall the app that is reporting the failure rather than changing unrelated Windows components. Then restart Windows and retry the game installation.

Reinstallation is more disruptive than repair or reset, so keep the captured code, game name, and destination-drive information before starting. If reinstalling one app changes nothing, do not repeatedly reinstall it; move to package, network, and drive diagnostics instead.

4. Run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter where it is available

Microsoft lists the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter as part of the normal sequence. In Windows Settings, open System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and look for Windows Store Apps. On a Windows release that presents the troubleshooter through a different Settings page, use the Store-app troubleshooting entry provided by that build. Apply its recommendations, restart if requested, and test the same installation again.

Choose the next branch by where the installation fails

Once the update-and-repair sequence has been attempted, identify the failure layer instead of applying every possible fix. The table below maps the observed context to the most relevant next action.

Observed context Most useful next check Why this branch fits
The code is not clearly visible or may have been copied incorrectly. Reopen the original dialog and copy the complete string. The reviewed sources do not define 0x800700422, so a code-specific diagnosis would be unreliable.
Xbox or Store opens, but installation fails after an update or reset. Check package-deployment events and the selected drive. The app itself may be functioning while package deployment or storage provisioning fails.
App Installer reports an MSIX or .appinstaller failure. Verify schema, Windows support, dependencies, and the original package URL; then inspect AppxDeployment-Server logs. Those checks target package compatibility and deployment rather than the Xbox interface.
Download or update stops on a managed, filtered, or corporate network. Review firewall, proxy, and endpoint filtering with the network administrator. Blocked Microsoft endpoints can prevent Store packages from downloading or updating.
The message says the selected drive is not set up to install games. Provision or select an appropriate drive, restart after an interrupted installation, and retry. Xbox installation guidance associates that message with a drive that is not provisioned for game installation.

Inspect MSIX and App Installer deployment diagnostics

This branch applies when App Installer or another package-deployment component reports the failure, or when the Xbox and Store interface gives no useful explanation. MSIX deployment can fail because the package is incompatible with the Windows version, a required dependency is missing, or the package source is wrong.

Check compatibility and dependencies

  • Confirm that the package’s declared Windows and schema requirements are supported by the installed Windows version.
  • Check that every package dependency is present and compatible. A package can fail before installation if a required framework or component is unavailable.
  • If the installation was launched from an .appinstaller file, preserve and verify the original URL. A changed, incomplete, or inaccessible source can prevent the deployment from obtaining the package or its dependencies.

Do not substitute a different download address simply because it has the same filename. The original package source is evidence that support can verify.

Read the AppxDeployment-Server event log

  1. Open Event Viewer.
  2. Expand Application and Services Logs.
  3. Open Microsoft > Windows > AppxDeployment-Server.
  4. Review entries created at the time of the failed installation. Record the event time, level, error text, package name, and any dependency or access details.
  5. Save the relevant event information with the screenshot and exact hexadecimal code.

The event log may identify a package or dependency even when the Xbox dialog shows only a generic failure. It also helps support determine whether the reported code was typed incorrectly.

Check firewall, proxy, and security filtering

Microsoft identifies blocked firewall or proxy endpoints as a cause of Store packages failing to download or update. This is particularly relevant when the app opens normally but the failure occurs during download, update, or dependency retrieval.

  1. Determine whether the PC is on a managed, school, workplace, or otherwise filtered network.
  2. Review Windows proxy settings and any organization-managed proxy configuration. Do not remove a required corporate setting without the administrator’s approval.
  3. Ask the responsible network administrator to check whether Microsoft Store or package-deployment endpoints are being blocked.
  4. Review security software and firewall rules for blocked Store traffic, again using the administrator’s process on a managed PC.
  5. Retry the installation after an approved filtering change and record whether the failure stage changes.

A network check is not the same as disabling protection indefinitely. Make only temporary, authorized changes, restore the normal policy after testing, and document which endpoint or rule was involved if the administrator identifies one.

Verify the Xbox game-install drive

Xbox installation guidance includes a specific failure state in which the selected drive is not set up to install games. If the dialog mentions that wording, focus on drive provisioning instead of treating it as proof that the hexadecimal code means access denied.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Xbox installation settings and identify the drive currently selected for new games.
  2. Confirm that the intended drive is available and is the one you recorded before troubleshooting.
  3. If an earlier installation was interrupted, restart Windows before trying again.
  4. After the restart, select a drive that Xbox recognizes as configured for game installation and retry the same title.

If the drive message does not appear, do not assume drive provisioning is the cause. Use the AppxDeployment-Server and network branches when their symptoms fit better.

When to stop repeating fixes and contact support

Escalate when the exact code remains undocumented, when repair/reset/reinstall and the applicable diagnostics do not change the result, or when package and network settings are controlled by an organization. Repeatedly resetting the same app without new evidence is unlikely to clarify the failure.

Provide Xbox or Microsoft Support with a compact evidence package:

  • The complete hexadecimal string copied from the dialog, plus a screenshot.
  • The application that displayed it: Xbox, Microsoft Store, or App Installer.
  • The game name, installation stage, Windows version and build, and destination drive.
  • The date and time of the latest failed attempt.
  • Which updates, restart, repair, reset, reinstall, and troubleshooter steps were completed.
  • Relevant entries from Application and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > AppxDeployment-Server.
  • Any administrator-confirmed firewall, proxy, or endpoint filtering information.

This record lets support distinguish a mistyped code from a package-deployment event and avoids starting the same low-risk steps again.

Optional shortcut after the manual checks

Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut for common Windows issues beyond the Xbox-specific checks above: it can address broken system elements and invalid redirects, adjust settings that affect CPU, RAM, and disk load, clear temporary and cache files, provide privacy and vulnerability checks, and include a real-time boost, file shredder, and app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, offers a free trial by category for at least two days before a paid subscription, complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and results vary—no tool repairs every crash.
