0x80070057 means Windows rejected a parameter during the WSL installation, update, download, or distribution-registration process. It is not a diagnosis of one specific WSL defect. Start with the supported wsl --install command, use the documented --web-download fallback if a distribution remains at 0.0%, and switch to the manual feature-and-package sequence when the one-command installer cannot complete.
The correct fix depends on where the process stops: enabling Windows features, downloading the distribution, installing an Appx package, or registering the distribution. The steps below separate those stages so you do not apply an unrelated repair.

What 0x80070057 means in a WSL installation
Windows uses 0x80070057 for an invalid parameter. Microsoft describes it as an invalid-parameter error during installation or update. In WSL cases, the same code can appear with WslRegisterDistribution and the message The parameter is incorrect.

That distinction matters: a download problem needs a different path from a registration problem.

- Feature stage: Windows cannot enable Windows Subsystem for Linux or Virtual Machine Platform.
- Download stage: the distribution stays at 0.0% or cannot be retrieved.
- Package stage: an Appx or AppxBundle file is downloaded but will not install.
- Registration stage: the package installs, then
WslRegisterDistributionreturns the error.
Before changing anything
Record the details that identify the failing stage. This prevents a fresh installation attempt from hiding useful evidence.
- Your Windows edition and build number.
- Whether the computer uses an x64 or ARM64 processor architecture.
- The exact distribution name and release you selected.
- The complete command you ran.
- The point at which the process stopped and the full text of the error.
- Whether Microsoft Store access is available on this network and account.
WSL2 also depends on the Virtual Machine Platform feature and the computer’s virtualization capability. If those prerequisites cannot be enabled, a distribution download alone will not complete a WSL2 setup.
Try Microsoft’s one-command installer first
On supported Windows systems, Microsoft recommends beginning with the current one-command installation path. It enables the required features and installs Ubuntu.
- Open PowerShell as Administrator. Search for PowerShell, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
- Run
wsl --install. - Allow Windows to enable the requested components and install Ubuntu.
- Restart when Windows requests it. A restart is part of the feature-enablement process, not an optional cleanup step.
- After the restart, allow the first-run distribution setup to finish. If the command completes without the 0x80070057 message, the original failure was likely confined to the earlier installation path.
If wsl --install is unavailable, fails while enabling features, or stops before the distribution is installed, continue with the manual sequence below rather than repeatedly running the same command.
When a distribution download is stuck at 0.0%
Microsoft documents a specific fallback for a download that remains at 0.0%: download the distribution before installing it.
- Open an elevated PowerShell window.
- Run
wsl --install --web-download -d <DistroName>, replacing<DistroName>with the exact distribution name you intend to install. - Wait for the download to finish before judging the installation stage. The command deliberately separates retrieval from installation.
- Restart if Windows asks you to do so, then complete the distribution’s first-run setup.
This fallback addresses the download path. It does not prove that a later Appx installation or distribution-registration failure has been fixed. If the package downloads successfully but registration still returns 0x80070057, use the stage-specific checks later in this guide.
Use the manual WSL2 installation sequence
The manual route is appropriate when the one-command installer is unavailable, when feature enablement fails, or when policy and Store restrictions require separate package handling. Perform the stages in order.

1. Enable Windows Subsystem for Linux
- Open the Windows search box and enter Turn Windows features on or off.
- Open the matching Control Panel dialog.
- Enable Windows Subsystem for Linux.
- Confirm the change and let Windows apply it.
If Windows reports an error at this point, the failure is in optional-feature enablement, not in the Linux distribution download. Note the exact message and Windows build before trying another route.
2. Enable Virtual Machine Platform
- Return to Turn Windows features on or off.
- Enable Virtual Machine Platform.
- Apply the change.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
Virtual Machine Platform is a WSL2 prerequisite. A successful distribution download cannot compensate for a missing or disabled virtualization component.
3. Install the WSL2 Linux kernel update package
After the restart, install Microsoft’s WSL2 Linux kernel update package using the package intended for your machine. The manual guide treats this as a separate step from enabling the two Windows features. If the package does not match the computer’s architecture, stop and obtain the corresponding architecture build instead of forcing the installation.

4. Make WSL2 the default
Set WSL 2 as the default version after the kernel package is in place. This ensures that a newly installed distribution is created for the WSL2 path rather than relying on an older default.

Install the required Linux distribution through the normal supported channel if Store access works. If the Store is blocked, use the direct package method described next. Keep the distribution release and architecture consistent with the package you selected.
Install Ubuntu directly when Microsoft Store access is blocked
Store-restricted systems can use Microsoft-documented Ubuntu packages. The available package formats include .appx and .AppxBundle. Microsoft documents direct packages for Ubuntu 24.04, 22.04, and 20.04, with architecture-specific choices.
Choose the matching package

Install the downloaded package
- Download the Microsoft package that matches both the architecture and Ubuntu release you selected.
- Open an elevated PowerShell window.
- Change to the directory containing the downloaded file.
- Run
Add-AppxPackage .app_name.Appx, replacingapp_name.Appxwith the actual filename, including its capitalization and extension. - Wait for Appx installation to finish before attempting distribution registration.
Do not type the example filename literally unless that is the name of your file. A filename mismatch can create a new parameter or package error that looks unrelated to the original download problem.

Feature enablement failed
If the error appears while Windows is enabling Windows Subsystem for Linux or Virtual Machine Platform, focus on the Windows feature state and restart requirement. Confirm that both features are selected, restart, and then continue with the kernel update package. Repeating distribution downloads before this stage succeeds does not address the failure.

The distribution download failed or remains at 0.0%
Use wsl --install --web-download -d <DistroName>. This is the documented path for downloading the distribution first. If your network blocks Store traffic, use the direct Ubuntu package route instead. Keep the original command output so you can distinguish a network or retrieval failure from a later package problem.
The Appx package downloaded but would not install
Check three values before retrying: the file extension, the exact filename supplied to Add-AppxPackage, and the architecture of the package. Also verify that you opened PowerShell in the directory containing the file and that the command points to the file you actually downloaded. An Appx installation failure is not the same as a WSL registration failure.
WslRegisterDistribution returned 0x80070057
At this point, the distribution package has reached the registration stage. Record the exact distribution, Windows build, WSL version, command output, and whether the package came from the Store or a direct Appx download. Microsoft’s installation troubleshooting material does not define one universal repair for every 0x80070057 registration case, so avoid applying unrelated fixes solely because they are associated with the same hexadecimal code.

Common mistakes that keep the error coming back
- Using a package for the wrong architecture: select x64 for an x64 machine and ARM64 for an ARM64 machine.
- Skipping the restart: feature changes may not be active until Windows restarts.
- Confusing download and registration: a successful download only proves that retrieval worked.
- Using the wrong Appx filename: copy the actual filename into the
Add-AppxPackagecommand. - Installing a distribution before WSL2 prerequisites: enable Virtual Machine Platform and install the kernel update package first for a WSL2 setup.
- Repeating a command without recording output: preserve the first failure, including the stage and full message.
- Treating the code as a complete diagnosis: 0x80070057 identifies an invalid parameter, not the component that supplied it.
What to provide if the manual steps still fail
For a useful troubleshooting report, include the Windows edition and build, processor architecture, WSL version, distribution name and release, installation source, exact command, the point of failure, and the complete output. State whether the failure occurred during feature enablement, download, Appx installation, or WslRegisterDistribution. That information narrows the problem far more effectively than the hexadecimal code alone.
