How to Fix 0x80070057 When Google Earth Pro Is Missing or Won’t Install

By VGSources Team 10 min read

If Google Earth Pro reports 0x80070057, start with Google’s full direct installer for the correct 32-bit or 64-bit Windows architecture. That package bypasses the web installer’s bootstrap download, which is the most targeted fix when setup fails. If Earth is already installed but missing from Start or will not start, use its Repair Tool to clear the cache, restore settings, enable Safe Mode, remove a damaged My Places file with a backup, or switch between OpenGL and DirectX.

What Windows error 0x80070057 means

Microsoft uses 0x80070057 for an incorrect-parameter or installation-failure condition. It is an outcome, not a diagnosis: the code does not identify one universal fault on every computer. Google Earth Pro setup can fail because the web installer could not complete its download, Windows permissions or storage conditions prevented installation, downloaded files were damaged, or another Windows configuration problem interrupted setup.

The wording “Google Earth Pro missing” can describe several different situations. Identifying the stage first prevents you from applying a startup repair to an installer problem, or deleting user data when only a shortcut is missing.

What you see Most relevant path Data risk
The installer stops with 0x80070057 before Earth is installed Use the full direct installer, then check Windows installation conditions None to existing My Places data
Installation finishes, but no Start-menu entry is visible Confirm the application is installed, then repair or reinstall from the direct package Usually none; do not delete My Places unnecessarily
Earth opens and immediately closes or hangs Google Earth Repair Tool: cache, Safe Mode, defaults, or My Places repair Cache and settings are reversible; My Places needs a backup step
The window is blank, distorted, or fails after a graphics change Repair Tool’s OpenGL/DirectX switch and Safe Mode Low; these options change rendering mode rather than saved places

Before you change anything

  • Record the symptom. Note whether the code appears during download, while the installer is copying files, or only when launching an already-installed copy.
  • Check the Windows architecture. Google’s current update page lists separate direct installers for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows. Selecting the matching package matters; do not assume that every Windows PC uses the same installer.
  • Protect saved places. If you have important pins, routes, or polygons, avoid the Repair Tool’s “Delete My Places” option until you understand the backup it creates.
  • Use an account that can install software. Installation can be blocked when the current Windows account lacks permission to write to the selected locations.
  • Have free disk space available. Windows needs room for the downloaded installer, temporary extraction files, and the installed program. A nearly full system drive can produce a generic setup failure instead of a useful message.

Install Google Earth Pro with the full direct package

This is the first remedy for 0x80070057 when the web or bootstrap installer fails. Google’s “Update Google Earth Pro” page currently lists version 7.3.7 direct installers for both Windows architectures. The page and its file labels are the authority for the current download; check them again if you are reading this after a later release.

  • Less chaos, more calm. The refreshed design of Windows 11 enables you to do what you want effortlessly.
  • Biometric logins. Encrypted authentication. And, of course, advanced antivirus defenses. Everything you need, plus more, to protect you against the latest cyberthreats.
  • Make the most of your screen space with snap layouts, desktops, and seamless redocking.
  • Widgets makes staying up-to-date with the content you love and the news you care about, simple.
  • Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)
  1. Identify 32-bit or 64-bit Windows. In Windows 11 or Windows 10, open Settings > System > About and read System type. On older Windows versions, open Control Panel > System and read the corresponding system-type entry. Choose the installer that matches Windows, not merely the type of processor advertised for the computer.
  2. Open Google’s “Update Google Earth Pro” page. Select the current Windows direct installer for your architecture. Google publishes separate 32-bit and 64-bit choices rather than one package that covers both.
  3. Save the file locally. Let the download finish before launching it. If your browser offers a choice of locations, use a folder you can find again, such as Downloads, and check that the file is present rather than opening an incomplete download.
  4. Run the installer. Double-click the downloaded file. If Windows asks for approval, confirm only when the file came from Google’s page. If your account is restricted, use an administrator account or the Windows approval prompt provided by your organization.
  5. Let setup complete before launching Earth. Do not start a second installer while the first is running. When setup finishes, search for Google Earth Pro from the Start menu and launch it once.
  6. Test the result. If Earth opens, confirm that your saved places and normal navigation work. If the program is present but the first launch fails, stop reinstalling and move to the Repair Tool section below.

A Google Earth Help Community report describes a user resolving this exact error by downloading and installing the latest direct version. That is useful anecdotal support for trying the full package, not a promise that it will repair every Windows installation.

If the direct installer still returns 0x80070057

Work through Windows conditions in order. The goal is to determine whether setup is being prevented by the operating system rather than by Google Earth’s application files.

Install pending Windows updates

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update (or Update & Security > Windows Update on older Windows 10 builds).
  2. Select Check for updates and install available updates that Windows offers.
  3. Restart when requested, even if the update screen says only a restart is pending.
  4. Try the matching Google direct installer again after Windows has finished updating.

Updates can replace damaged installation components and resolve compatibility conditions, but they do not change a 32-bit Windows installation into a 64-bit one. Keep the architecture selection from the earlier step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check storage and the installation account

  • Open Settings > System > Storage and verify that the system drive has comfortable free space, not merely a few megabytes.
  • Empty files you no longer need from the Recycle Bin and temporary locations using Windows’ built-in Storage settings. Removing temporary data is a space-management step; it is not a guarantee of a performance increase.
  • Confirm that you can install another ordinary desktop application. If Windows blocks other installations too, the problem is broader than Google Earth.
  • If the computer is managed by a school or employer, ask the administrator whether software installation is restricted. Do not bypass an organization’s policy.

Check Windows system files when corruption is suspected

When Windows components themselves appear damaged—for example, several unrelated installers fail—run Microsoft’s System File Checker from an elevated Command Prompt. Open Start, type Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, and run:

sfc /scannow

Wait for the verification to finish, follow any repair or restart instruction it reports, and then retry the Google Earth installer. A system-file scan is a diagnostic and repair step for Windows files; it does not prove that Google Earth was the original source of the problem.

Retry with a freshly downloaded file

If the download was interrupted or the local installer became corrupted, delete that incomplete copy and download the direct package again from Google’s update page. Keep only the architecture-appropriate file, then run the new download. Do not use an unofficial mirror to work around a failed download.

When Google Earth Pro is installed but missing from Start

First distinguish a missing shortcut from a missing application. Search the Start menu for “Google Earth Pro.” If Windows finds it, launch it and use the Repair Tool. If Windows cannot find it and the direct installer reports that setup is already present, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows 10) and verify whether Google Earth Pro appears in the installed-app list. An entry there indicates an installation or shortcut problem rather than a simple download failure.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the program is listed but cannot launch, use the application’s own repair controls instead of repeatedly launching setup. If it is not listed and no program files remain, run the matching direct installer again. Should setup continue to report 0x80070057, return to the Windows Update, storage, permissions, and system-file checks above.

Use Google Earth Pro’s Repair Tool for startup failures

Google describes the Repair Tool as the way “to more easily do things like clear your cache or fix startup issues.” Open Google Earth Pro, choose Help > Launch Repair Tool, and then close Google Earth Pro when the tool asks you to. The available actions target different failure modes, so use the least disruptive one that matches your symptom.

Clear disk cache

Choose Clear disk cache when Earth has stale or damaged cached map data, takes an unusually long time to start, or behaves differently after a failed update. Clearing the cache removes locally stored temporary map data; it does not remove your saved My Places file. The first map display after clearing can require Earth to rebuild its cache.

Turn on Safe Mode

Use Turn on Safe Mode when normal startup fails or a display-related problem prevents you from working in the main window. Safe Mode is a diagnostic launch choice. If Earth works there, the result points toward a rendering, cache, or configuration issue rather than proving that the installer itself is defective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restore default settings

Restore default settings resets Google Earth Pro’s application preferences. Select it when a changed setting causes startup trouble and clearing the cache did not help. Because this affects preferences rather than the Windows installation package, it is useful after installation has succeeded but the application no longer behaves normally.

Delete My Places, with the backup in mind

Delete My Places is more consequential than clearing a cache or restoring preferences. Google’s Repair Tool renames the saved file to myplaces.repairtoolbackup.kml so it can be recovered. Use this option only when a damaged places file is a plausible cause of startup failure, and keep that backup until you have confirmed that Earth opens and that the places you need are available.

The renamed file is a recovery safeguard, not a promise that every custom item can be restored automatically. Do not delete the backup immediately after the program starts; first verify the places and folders that matter to you.

Switch between OpenGL and DirectX for graphics or launch problems

Google Earth uses either DirectX or OpenGL to render its globe. Some graphics hardware or drivers work better with one mode than the other. In the Repair Tool, choose Switch between OpenGL and DirectX, restart Earth, and check whether the blank window, flicker, crash, or rendering failure changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This switch is appropriate when installation completes but the application fails during display initialization. It is not a substitute for the direct installer when setup itself stops with 0x80070057. If one mode works and the other does not, leave the working mode selected and investigate graphics-driver updates separately rather than repeatedly reinstalling Earth.

Choose the remedy by installation stage, architecture, and risk

Remedy Use it when What it changes Risk to saved places
Google direct installer The web installer fails, especially with 0x80070057 Replaces the bootstrap download with a complete package for 32-bit or 64-bit Windows Normally none
Windows Update and storage checks The direct package also fails or unrelated installers fail Updates Windows and removes environmental installation blockers None to My Places
Clear disk cache Startup is slow, unstable, or map data appears stale Removes temporary cached map data Low; saved places remain
Safe Mode Normal startup or display initialization fails Starts Earth with a diagnostic configuration Low
Restore default settings A preference change appears to trigger the failure Resets application preferences Low, but preferences must be set again
Delete My Places A damaged places file may be preventing startup Renames the places file to myplaces.repairtoolbackup.kml Highest; preserve and recover the backup
OpenGL/DirectX switch The program opens incorrectly or crashes during graphics setup Changes the rendering API used by Earth None to saved places

Common mistakes that make the problem harder

  • Using the wrong architecture. A 32-bit/64-bit mismatch can keep setup from completing even when the download itself looks successful.
  • Retrying only the web installer. Repeating the same bootstrap download does not test the full-package path; use Google’s direct installer instead.
  • Deleting My Places as a first step. Cache and settings repairs are less disruptive. If you eventually remove My Places, retain the named backup file.
  • Assuming the code identifies malware or one broken file. 0x80070057 is a broad Windows installation or parameter error. Check storage, permissions, updates, and system files rather than declaring a single cause.
  • Installing from an unverified mirror. Use Google’s own update page and select the architecture it identifies for your Windows installation.
  • Changing graphics modes during an installer failure. OpenGL and DirectX settings help an installed application that cannot render; they do not repair a package that never installed.

Google Earth Pro version and download availability

Google’s current update page lists Google Earth Pro for desktop version 7.3.7 installers for both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows. Software pages change, so verify the version and architecture choices when you follow these steps rather than relying on an old download saved elsewhere.

Google also states that Google Earth Pro for desktop is planned to become unavailable for download after June 25, 2027. That is a future policy notice, not a claim that downloads have already stopped. Recheck Google’s current notice before publishing or updating a troubleshooting guide, particularly if you are attempting installation after that date.

Final recovery checklist

  1. Classify the failure as web-installer, full-installer, missing shortcut, startup, or graphics.
  2. Check Windows System type and select the matching 32-bit or 64-bit Google direct installer.
  3. Download the current package from Google’s “Update Google Earth Pro” page and run it locally.
  4. If setup still fails, install pending Windows updates, confirm free disk space, verify installation permissions, and run sfc /scannow when broader Windows corruption is suspected.
  5. If Earth is installed, open Help > Launch Repair Tool and try cache clearing, Safe Mode, or default settings before touching My Places.
  6. Use Delete My Places only with the backup file myplaces.repairtoolbackup.kml preserved.
  7. For a blank or unstable display, switch between OpenGL and DirectX and test again.
  8. Confirm the current download policy, especially the planned June 25, 2027 change, if the installation is being attempted later.
