What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Xbox One error 0x80070057 usually appears when a restore or system update cannot complete. The code does not identify one guaranteed cause: storage problems, damaged update data, an update that does not match the console, or a hardware fault can produce similar symptoms. Start with the least destructive route that matches what your console can still do.
If the console reaches the dashboard, try the online update first. If it opens the Startup Troubleshooter, use a correctly prepared NTFS USB drive and the current OSU1 package for your exact Xbox One model. Reset only after those options fail, and treat internal-drive work as a last-resort repair.

Confirm the code and identify the recovery screen
Xbox codes use a zero after the “x”: 0x80070057, not ox80070057. Check the characters on the console before downloading recovery files. The screen you can reach determines which procedure is appropriate.
| What the console does | Best first route | What it can preserve | Internet needed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boots to the normal dashboard | Online update, restart, then retry the restore | Normally preserves installed games and apps | Yes |
| Opens Startup Troubleshooter | Offline system update with OSU1 | Usually attempts an update without a full reset; outcome depends on the recovery state | No, after the package is downloaded |
| Offline update fails | Fresh OSU1 download, USB and model checks, then the reset option shown by the troubleshooter | A keep-games-and-apps option may be available; do not assume it will be | No for the USB attempt |
| OSU1 and reset both fail | Microsoft service or qualified console repair | Depends on the fault and repair method | Not necessarily |
Do not treat the table as proof that the code has a single meaning. Microsoft’s general update instructions describe how to update the console, but they do not establish one universal hardware or software diagnosis for every restore failure.

Why an Xbox One restore can stop with 0x80070057
Incomplete or damaged update data
A downloaded update can be incomplete or corrupted. If the console repeatedly fails at the same stage, downloading a fresh package is safer than reusing an old file.
Storage or cache conditions
Secondary technical references associate this code with storage or corrupted installation/cache conditions. That association is not a definitive Microsoft diagnosis for every Xbox One restore, so use it as a troubleshooting direction rather than a conclusion.
Wrong console model or package context
OSU1 is model-specific. An offline package intended for a different Xbox One model, or an outdated package that no longer matches the console’s expected build, can fail even when the USB itself is readable.
Network interruption during an online restore
An online update depends on a stable connection. A failed download or interrupted installation can leave the console needing the Startup Troubleshooter and an offline update.
Underlying drive or board failure
If a correctly prepared, current OSU1 package fails and the available reset choices also fail, the problem may be beyond the operating system. Internal-drive or board work can permanently brick the console when done incorrectly.
Prepare safely before changing anything
- Keep the console connected to reliable power. Do not interrupt it while an update or reset is writing data.
- If the dashboard still opens, preserve anything you can before escalating. A reset can remove installed content, and “remove everything” is destructive.
- For offline recovery, use an NTFS-compatible USB flash drive that the console can read. The drive is a transport for the OSU1 files; it does not repair a failing internal drive.
- Use the current OSU1 download from the official Xbox offline-update page and select the exact Xbox One model shown for your console. Do not assume an old OSU1 archive remains valid forever.
- On a Windows PC, extract the downloaded package exactly as provided. The extracted
$SystemUpdatefolder and its files must be placed on the USB media in the layout required by the Xbox instructions, not buried inside an extra folder.
Fix 1: run the normal online update
Use this route when the console reaches the dashboard. It is the least disruptive option and does not require a reset.

- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Connect the Xbox One to the internet.
- Open Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates & downloads.
- Select Update console. Microsoft’s published instruction uses this exact path.
- Check Latest console update status and allow the console to complete any offered update.
- Restart the console after the update finishes, then retry the restore that produced
0x80070057.
Enable automatic updating for later attempts
Automatic updating is controlled under General > Power mode & startup. Enabling it can let the console obtain future system updates without waiting for a manual check, but it will not repair a restore that is already blocked by a damaged installation or hardware fault.

Restart the console and network equipment, reconnect the console, and run the same update check once more. If the dashboard remains usable but the update repeatedly fails, stop repeating the same download and move to the offline OSU1 procedure.
Fix 2: use OSU1 from the Startup Troubleshooter
Use this method when the Xbox opens its Startup Troubleshooter instead of the dashboard. It replaces the online download with a USB-based system update.
Download the correct package
- On a separate computer, open the official Xbox offline-update page.
- Choose I need to update my console offline.
- Select the relevant Xbox One model.
- Download the current OSU1 package.
- Extract the package and copy the required
$SystemUpdatefiles to the root of an NTFS-compatible USB drive. Keep the folder structure supplied by the Xbox instructions. - Safely eject the USB drive from the computer.
The OSU1 file is a recovery package, not a generic Xbox application. Selecting the wrong model or using a stale package can produce another failed update even if the drive is formatted correctly.
Start the offline update
- Power the console down completely.
- Insert the prepared USB drive.
- Start the console and wait for the Startup Troubleshooter to appear.
- Choose Offline system update.
- Allow the update to run without removing the USB drive or cutting power.
The exact choices shown can vary with the recovery state. If Offline system update is unavailable, the console may not be recognizing the USB layout, may be running a recovery state that does not accept OSU1, or may have a deeper fault.

- Model: Download OSU1 again and verify that the selected Xbox One model matches the console.
- Package freshness: Delete the old extraction and start with a newly downloaded package rather than combining files from different downloads.
- Folder layout: Confirm that the extracted
$SystemUpdatefolder is where the Xbox instructions require it, without an extra nesting level. - USB format: Use NTFS-compatible media and recreate the preparation if the console does not detect the drive.
- Build context: Do not assume that a package that worked at an earlier date is still appropriate for the console’s current recovery state.
- Power: Leave the console connected to stable power throughout the attempt.
If a fresh, correctly matched OSU1 package fails in the same way, repeating the identical attempt is unlikely to add information. Proceed to the reset choices shown by the Startup Troubleshooter.

Fix 3: reset from the Startup Troubleshooter
The Startup Error Solution route is Microsoft’s recovery path for consoles that cannot start normally. Reset is an escalation because it can remove installed content.
Choose a keep-content option only when it is offered
Some recovery screens provide a reset choice that keeps games and apps. Use it only if the console explicitly offers it and you accept that the reset can still affect settings, accounts, or other local data. The option is not guaranteed to appear for every failure.
Understand “remove everything”
A full reset that removes everything is destructive. It can delete installed games, apps, and local settings. Use it only after you have preserved what can be preserved and understand that you may need to reinstall content afterward.

When the reset completes, let the console finish its first-run setup and then apply the normal online update path. If the reset itself fails, returns to the same Startup Troubleshooter screen, or is followed by another 0x80070057 restore failure, treat that pattern as evidence that software-only recovery may not be enough.
When OSU1 and reset both fail
Use official service or qualified console repair
At this point, contact Microsoft service or a repair technician experienced with Xbox One hardware. Provide the exact code, the point at which the restore stops, whether the dashboard was reachable, and which OSU1 and reset attempts were completed. This information helps distinguish a recoverable software problem from a storage or board fault.
Why internal-drive work is not a first-line fix
An advanced procedure can involve removing the internal drive, connecting it to a Windows PC with a SATA data-and-power-to-USB reader, and reimaging or replacing the drive. The procedure is model- and image-dependent, requires careful handling of the drive and console hardware, and can brick the console if the wrong disk work or board work is performed. It is not an appropriate next step for most owners who have not already ruled out OSU1 and reset.
Quick Recap
Choosing the next step
| Your situation | Action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Dashboard works and an update is pending | Run Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates & downloads > Update console | Preserves the normal installation path and avoids a reset |
| Startup Troubleshooter appears and you have a computer | Prepare NTFS USB media with a newly downloaded, model-matched OSU1 package | Provides a clean offline update path |
| Offline update is rejected | Recheck model, package freshness, $SystemUpdate placement, USB format, and power; then retry once |
These are the controllable causes of a failed USB attempt |
| OSU1 still fails | Use the least destructive reset option actually offered | Reset is the next software recovery step, but content loss is possible |
| Reset and OSU1 both fail | Seek Microsoft service or qualified repair | Internal storage or another hardware component may be involved |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Typing the code as “ox80070057” and searching for the wrong error.
- Using an OSU1 package for a different Xbox One model.
- Reusing an old OSU1 download without checking whether it matches the current recovery context.
- Putting
$SystemUpdateinside an extra folder on the USB drive. - Using a USB format the console cannot read.
- Removing the USB drive or unplugging the console during the update.
- Choosing “remove everything” before understanding the data loss.
- Opening the console and altering the internal drive before completing the supported software recovery routes.
Optional Windows-side shortcut
Outbyte PC Repair can be an optional shortcut for Windows-side problems such as broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL issues, temporary and cache-file cleanup, settings that add CPU, RAM or disk load, privacy checks, vulnerability checks, real-time boost, file shredding and app-crash logs. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, offers a free trial by category for at least two days and then requires a subscription. It complements an antivirus rather than replacing one; results vary, and no tool repairs every crash or a failing Xbox console.
