The text 0x8007042 is probably an incomplete Windows error code. The most likely full code is 0x80070422, which Microsoft identifies as a disabled or stopped Windows Update service. Before changing anything, copy the complete hexadecimal code and note whether it appeared in Windows Update, Microsoft Store, Windows Firewall, or Windows Setup. Nearby codes have different causes and require different repairs.
Confirm the complete code and the affected feature
Windows error codes are position-specific: one missing character can change the diagnosis. A message ending in 042 is not enough to select a repair. Open the original dialog, Windows Update history, setup log, or Store message and copy every character, including any second group separated by a space.

- Record the exact code: include the leading
0x, all hexadecimal digits, and any suffix such as0x4000D. - Record the operation: write down whether the failure occurred while checking for updates, installing an app, starting Firewall, or upgrading Windows.
- Record timing: note whether the problem began after a restart, update, driver installation, security-software change, or interrupted upgrade.
The following codes are commonly confused because their text looks similar:
Recommended Free Tools
| Code | Typical context | Meaning and first response |
|---|---|---|
0x80070422 |
Windows Update | ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED; the Windows Update service is disabled, stopped, or not running. Enable and start that service. |
0x8007042C |
Windows Firewall | A separate firewall-related code. Do not apply a firewall repair merely because a truncated message ends in 042. |
0x8007042B 0x4000D |
Windows Setup or an upgrade | Setup was interrupted by another process. This is not the disabled-service condition represented by 0x80070422. |
If the complete code is not visible, take a screenshot or copy the text from the event or update history entry. Troubleshooting a guessed code can disable an unrelated service or hide the evidence needed for the correct fix.

Fix the likely code, 0x80070422
For Windows Update error 0x80070422, the first repair is to set the Windows Update service to start automatically and start it if it is stopped. You need an account permitted to change Windows services.
Enable and start Windows Update
- Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
services.mscand press Enter. The Services console opens. - Scroll to Windows Update, or select the list and type its name to locate it.
- Double-click Windows Update to open Properties.
- Set Startup type to Automatic.
- Check Service status. If it says Stopped, select Start.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Restart the computer. After signing in, open Windows Update and select Check for updates again.
If Start is unavailable, the service may be controlled by policy, a damaged service configuration, or another dependency. Do not delete the service or change unrelated services at random. Record the message shown when you try to start it and continue with the diagnostic steps below.
Check the result before making more changes
- If Windows Update begins checking or downloading, let the operation finish and restart when Windows requests it.
- If the same code returns immediately, note whether the service remained set to Automatic and whether its status changed back to Stopped.
- If a different code appears, stop treating it as
0x80070422; use the newly displayed complete code and its context.
Run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter
When the service is enabled but updates still fail, use Windows’ built-in Windows Update troubleshooter. The exact page name varies by Windows release, but it is located in the Settings troubleshooting area.

- Open the troubleshooting page. In current Windows releases this is under System and then Troubleshoot; older releases place troubleshooters under Update & Security.
- Choose Other troubleshooters or Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and choose Run.
- Allow the troubleshooter to inspect the update service and related components. Apply a proposed repair only if it identifies the Windows Update problem you are experiencing.
- Restart Windows if requested, then run Check for updates once more.
A troubleshooter can correct configuration issues, but it cannot prove that every update component or system file is healthy. If it reports that it could not identify a problem, continue rather than repeatedly running the same scan.
Reset Windows Update components when the service runs but updates remain broken
Microsoft provides Windows Update component-reset guidance for cases where the service starts yet update detection or installation continues to fail. A reset clears and rebuilds update working data; it does not make an unidentified error code safe to ignore.
- First write down the complete error code and the update operation that failed.
- Use an administrator account and follow Microsoft’s current Windows Update component-reset procedure for your Windows version. The procedure stops the update-related services, renames or clears their working folders, and starts the services again.
- Restart Windows after the reset.
- Open Windows Update, select Check for updates, and test with one update cycle before attempting a large upgrade.
Do not improvise by deleting arbitrary folders in C:Windows. The reset must target the components named in Microsoft’s instructions. If a work or school computer is managed by policy, contact the administrator before resetting services or update data.
Repair system-file corruption with SFC and DISM
Microsoft’s upgrade guidance identifies System File Checker (SFC) and Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) as supported tools for corruption-related failures. Run them only after recording the exact code, because a corruption repair is not a substitute for identifying a service, firewall, or Setup error.
Run DISM first
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin), PowerShell (Admin), or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. - Wait for the operation to reach completion. Closing the window while it is servicing the image can leave the repair unfinished.
Run System File Checker
- In the same elevated window, run
sfc /scannow. - Wait until verification reaches 100 percent and read the final message.
- Restart Windows, then retry Windows Update.
These commands may report that no integrity violations were found, that files were repaired, or that some files could not be repaired. Keep the result with the original error code. If the code changes after the repair, troubleshoot the new code rather than repeating SFC and DISM indefinitely.

Check for interference from background software
Microsoft’s upgrade guidance notes that background applications, antivirus products, and other processes can interfere with an upgrade. This is especially relevant to 0x8007042B 0x4000D, which is associated with a Windows Setup interruption, not the disabled Windows Update service.
- Close nonessential applications before starting an update or upgrade.
- Disconnect unnecessary peripherals that are not required for the operation.
- Do not remove security software as a first step. If a managed security product may be blocking the operation, use its documented temporary troubleshooting mode or ask the administrator for help.
- Restart Windows and retry with as few background processes as practical.
If the failure occurs only during an in-place upgrade and the complete code is 0x8007042B 0x4000D, focus on finding the interfering process and following Windows Setup guidance. Enabling Windows Update in Services will not address that Setup-specific condition.
If the message appears in Microsoft Store
Some readers see the truncated text while installing or updating an app through Microsoft Store. The Store context does not by itself prove that the code is a Store-specific failure. Copy the complete code first. If it resolves to 0x80070422, use the Windows Update service procedure above, because that code describes a disabled or stopped update service. If the Store displays another full code, use that code’s diagnosis instead of changing Windows Firewall or unrelated services.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →After the service repair, restart Windows before testing the Store again. Record whether Windows Update itself can check for updates; that result helps distinguish a system update-service problem from an application-specific Store problem.
If the message concerns Windows Firewall
Do not use the Windows Update procedure solely because the visible text appears to contain 0x8007042. Microsoft documents 0x8007042C as a different firewall-related code. A firewall error should be handled as a firewall-service problem only when the complete code and the dialog context confirm it.
Likewise, do not disable the firewall as a diagnostic shortcut. A firewall change can reduce protection and will not repair a stopped Windows Update service. Capture the full firewall code and the exact service message before applying a firewall-specific procedure.
Safety, limits, and when to escalate
- The code is not a diagnosis by itself: the missing digit or missing suffix can change the repair completely.
- No physical product is required: this Windows service and component troubleshooting is performed in the operating system.
- Keep evidence: save the full code, the affected feature, service status, troubleshooter result, and SFC or DISM output.
- Escalate managed devices: organization policies may intentionally prevent service changes or updates.
- Stop when symptoms change: a new code is new evidence, not proof that the previous procedure failed.
The practical decision path is therefore: verify the complete code; if it is 0x80070422, set Windows Update to Automatic, start it, restart, and retry; then run the troubleshooter, follow the component-reset guidance, and use DISM and SFC for suspected corruption. Use the exact context for 0x8007042C and 0x8007042B 0x4000D instead of forcing them into the Windows Update diagnosis.
