How to Fix 0x8007045D (I/O Device Error) on Windows

How do I fix 08007045d denied on Windows? First check the exact code in the dialog. Windows normally displays 0x8007045D, which means an I/O-device read or write failed; it is not the same error as 0x80070005, the general “Access Denied” code. The repair depends on whether the failing device is the source drive, destination drive, USB connection, SD card, optical disc or Windows installation media.

Stop repeated retries if the drive is making unusual noises or files are becoming inaccessible. Preserve readable data first, then isolate the connection and storage devices before running disk checks.

Check which Windows error you actually have

0x8007045D: an I/O-device error

0x8007045D is Windows error ERROR_IO_DEVICE. Microsoft’s wording is: “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” Windows issued a read or write request and could not complete it reliably. The code does not identify one particular part; the source drive, destination drive, cable, USB port, adapter, card reader, SD card, optical disc or installation media may be responsible.

The error can appear while copying files, creating a backup, installing Windows, burning or reading a disc, or opening files on USB and SD storage. Microsoft Q&A cases have described transfers between internal and external drives and photo or video reads from an SD card or reader.

0x80070005: a separate Access Denied error

0x80070005 is E_ACCESSDENIED. It generally means that the account, service or security policy lacks permission. It is not evidence of a failed cable or bad sector, so use the separate procedure near the end of this guide rather than treating it as an I/O fault.

Code shown What Windows is reporting First area to investigate
0x8007045D A read/write request to an I/O device failed Drives, removable media, cables, ports, readers, adapters and installer media
0x80070005 Access is denied because of permissions, services or policy Folder and registry permissions, Windows servicing and security software

Protect files before troubleshooting

A failing disk can deteriorate while Windows repeatedly retries reads or writes. If the affected volume contains unique photos, save games, documents or other irreplaceable data, copy the most important files to a separate, known-good disk before repair attempts.

  • Stop if you hear repeated clicking, grinding, spin-up and spin-down cycles, or other unusual mechanical noises.
  • Do not format, initialize or “repair” a disk that contains the only copy of important files.
  • Use small, noncritical files for initial tests. A successful test copy does not prove that every sector is healthy.
  • If files are unreadable and the data matters, minimize power-on time and consult a professional recovery service. Repeated scans and writes can reduce the chance of recovery.

Identify the fault domain

Write down the operation that failed and both sides of it. For example, record “copying from an SD card to the internal SSD” or “Windows setup reading a USB installer.” This tells you which component to test first.

Where the error occurs Likely areas to isolate Lowest-risk first test
Copy from one disk to another Source disk, destination disk, cable, USB port or enclosure Copy a small, noncritical file to a different destination and swap the cable or port
Backup to an external drive External drive, enclosure power, USB cable or destination file system Try another known-good destination drive and another USB path
Read from USB or SD media Media, card reader, adapter, port or media file system Test the card and reader separately on another computer
Windows installation Bootable USB/DVD, ISO download, optical drive or target disk Recreate the installer on fresh media, then retry
Disc burning or reading Disc surface, burner/reader, drive firmware, media or the source file Try a different disc and a different drive; avoid reusing visibly damaged media

Step-by-step fixes for 0x8007045D

1. Record the exact message and timing

  1. Capture the complete dialog, including the hexadecimal code and the file or drive named.
  2. Note whether the failure happens immediately or after a particular percentage of a copy or installation.
  3. Record the drive letters, USB devices, adapters and software involved.

An error that always stops at the same file or percentage can point to one unreadable source area. An error that moves around after reconnecting can point to the connection path or a device that is losing contact.

2. Shut down safely and reseat the connection

  1. Cancel the operation and eject removable storage through File Explorer when Windows allows it.
  2. Power off an external hard drive or SSD if its enclosure has a switch; then disconnect it.
  3. Reconnect directly to the computer, not through an unpowered hub or dock.
  4. Try a different USB port. On a desktop, a rear motherboard port can provide a more direct connection than a front-panel extension.
  5. Replace the USB data cable with a known-good cable of the correct type. A cable that powers a device can still have unreliable data lines.
  6. For an SD card, test the card in another reader and test the reader with another card. For a removable drive, test it on another computer.

These swaps are diagnostic: if the same disk works through a different cable or reader, replace the failed connection component rather than repeatedly repairing the disk.

3. Test source and destination independently

  1. If the source is removable, copy one small, noncritical file to the computer’s internal drive.
  2. If that works, copy a different small file to a second destination. A failure only with one destination points toward that destination or its connection.
  3. If the source read fails on multiple computers and readers, stop large copy attempts. The source media may be failing.
  4. If the source reads correctly but every destination fails, test a different destination disk and cable.

Do not use a failing source as the destination for a “backup.” A backup is useful only when it is written to storage that can be read back reliably.

4. Try another destination or replacement test drive

When a copy or backup fails, a known-good external USB hard drive or SSD is a practical test destination. It can show whether the original destination is the problem, and it can serve as a replacement if that destination has failed. Buying another drive cannot repair a failing source disk or restore files that are already corrupted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a different USB data cable or card reader when changing the connection path is easier than changing the storage device. Keep the test simple: one device, one cable, one direct port and one small file at a time.

5. Recreate Windows installation media

If the code appears while reinstalling Windows, the bootable USB or DVD may be corrupt or incorrectly created. Microsoft Q&A guidance has identified faulty installation media as a possible cause.

  1. Obtain a fresh Windows installation image from Microsoft’s official download process.
  2. Use a different, good-quality USB flash drive if the existing installer has been used repeatedly or has shown read errors.
  3. Recreate the bootable media rather than copying files manually onto the old installer.
  4. Boot from the newly created media and retry the installation.
  5. If setup still fails, test the target disk and its storage connection; recreating media cannot fix a bad target drive.

6. Check the disk after data protection

Once important files are protected, Windows can check the file system with CHKDSK. Replace X: below with the affected volume’s letter:

  1. Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  2. Run chkdsk X: /scan for an online scan when the volume supports it.
  3. If Windows reports file-system errors and your data is backed up, schedule a repair with chkdsk X: /f. Windows may ask to run it after restart.
  4. Use chkdsk X: /r only when you understand that a full bad-sector scan can take a long time and places additional read workload on a troubled disk.

CHKDSK can identify file-system problems and bad sectors; it cannot make physically damaged media reliable. If it reports bad sectors, unreadable clusters or recurring I/O errors, plan to replace the disk or seek recovery help instead of repeating repairs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Run the manufacturer’s diagnostic when available

Many drive manufacturers provide a diagnostic utility for their own hardware. Use the vendor’s documentation for the exact test and preserve data first. A result indicating hardware failure is a replacement or recovery decision, not a reason to keep testing indefinitely. If the drive is in an external enclosure, test the enclosure, cable and drive separately when the design allows it.

Fixes by the situation in which the error appears

Copying files between internal and external drives

Start by identifying whether the failure occurs while reading the source or writing the destination. Copy a small file from the same source to the internal drive, then from the internal drive to another destination. If only one direction fails, concentrate on that side. If the failure follows the external enclosure across computers, the enclosure or drive is suspect; if it disappears with a new cable or port, the connection was the fault domain.

Backups

Pause the backup job rather than letting it retry endlessly. Check whether the same files fail every time. Preserve accessible files manually to a separate disk, then test the destination with a small copy. A backup that completes after silently skipping unreadable files is not a complete backup, so review the backup program’s log for skipped or failed items.

USB flash drives and SD cards

Test the media in another reader or computer before formatting it. If only one reader fails, replace the reader. If the card fails everywhere, copy whatever remains readable and retire the card. Formatting may make a device appear usable by creating a new file system, but it destroys directory information and does not cure worn or damaged flash memory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Optical discs

Inspect the disc for scratches, contamination or warping and clean it according to the drive or disc maker’s instructions. Test another disc in the same drive and the suspect disc in another compatible drive. If only one disc fails, the media is likely at fault; if many known-good discs fail, investigate the optical drive or its connection.

Windows installation or upgrade

Recreate the bootable media first. If the new installer fails at the same point, disconnect unnecessary USB devices, verify that the target drive is firmly connected, and test that drive from another environment. Do not erase partitions until you have confirmed that required data is backed up.

How to interpret the result

Observation Most useful next action
A different cable or port makes the device reliable Replace the cable or avoid the failing port; continue monitoring the storage device
The device works on another computer Investigate the original computer’s port, adapter, hub, enclosure power or operating-system configuration
The same device fails on several computers and connection paths Copy readable data immediately, then replace the device or seek professional recovery
Only one destination fails Use another destination and test or replace the original destination drive
CHKDSK reports bad sectors or errors return Treat the disk as unreliable; replacement is safer than continued normal use
A fresh installer works Discard the old installation media and keep the new media as the verified installer

What to do when the code is really 0x80070005

Do not apply the I/O-device workflow to an Access Denied message. Microsoft documents 0x80070005 as E_ACCESSDENIED, a general permissions error.

  1. Confirm the exact path, application and operation that was denied.
  2. For Windows Update or servicing failures, review the Windows Update and CBS logs for the component and account named in the failure.
  3. Check permissions on the affected folder, file or registry key. Verify that the required account or service has the access it needs.
  4. Pay particular attention to TrustedInstaller and SYSTEM permissions when the failure involves Windows components.
  5. Check whether security software, controlled-folder access or an organizational policy is blocking the operation. Change a policy only when you administer the computer and understand the security impact.
  6. Restore any temporary permission change after the task, and avoid taking ownership of system folders as a blanket fix.

If the dialog contains both an access-denied message and a separate I/O error, record both. A permission problem can prevent an operation from starting, while a device problem can make it fail after it has begun; they require different remedies.

When replacement or professional recovery is the right choice

Replacement is appropriate when a disk repeatedly reports bad sectors, disappears, produces I/O errors on multiple computers or cannot complete basic reads and writes. Professional recovery is the safer option when the device contains unique data that is not readable elsewhere. Keep the failing device powered off until you decide; do not format it or run increasingly intensive scans merely to see whether it improves.

“Error 0x8007045d is ‘ERROR_IO_DEVICE’ – ‘The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.’” — Diana, Microsoft Answers Support Engineer, 2010.

There is no established universal success rate for these fixes. The code identifies a failed I/O request, not a single repairable defect, so the outcome depends on which component is failing and whether the data remains readable.
