How to Fix 0x8007045D on Windows 7 (I/O Device Error)

0x8007045D (also written 0x0000045D, ERROR_IO_DEVICE, or error 1117) means Windows could not complete a request to read from or write to a device. It commonly appears while copying files, creating a Windows Backup, installing Windows, or burning a CD or DVD. The code does not prove that Windows itself is damaged or that one particular disk has completely failed. Protect important data first, then isolate the failing part of the path: the source or destination drive, USB cable or port, enclosure, optical disc, burner, or related Windows service.

What 0x8007045D means

Microsoft’s Win32 error reference defines 0x0000045D / ERROR_IO_DEVICE (1117) as: “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” Windows issued an input/output request and the device or connection did not complete it successfully. An I/O request can fail because a disk cannot read a sector, a USB connection drops, an enclosure loses power, an optical disc is defective, a burner cannot write at the selected speed, or a required backup component is not responding.

The hexadecimal code is sometimes typed as “ox8007045d,” using the letter o instead of zero. The intended Windows code is 0x8007045D. It is a symptom, not a component-level diagnosis. Replacing a hard drive immediately can waste money if a cable or port is the actual fault; repeatedly retrying a failing drive can make recovery harder.

Protect files before attempting repairs

If the affected drive still opens, copy irreplaceable documents, photographs, save files, and other data to a known-good disk before running a repair that writes to the source. Prioritize files that cannot be recreated. Copy in small groups rather than starting one enormous transfer, and note which folder or file triggers the error.

  • Security & Warranty: Securely protects files using an advanced security software solution with 256-bit AES encryption. Backed by a Lexar 3-year limited warranty
  • Do not format, initialize, or repartition a drive that contains data you still need.
  • Do not run a repair repeatedly on a disk that is clicking, disappearing, becoming extremely slow, or producing new errors.
  • If Windows offers to scan and fix a removable drive, cancel that prompt until your important files are secured.
  • Keep the failing device powered and still; unplugging it during a write can worsen filesystem damage.

When a drive is unstable, a sector-by-sector clone made with specialist recovery equipment is safer than repeated ordinary copies. If the files are irreplaceable and the drive is deteriorating, stop testing and consult a professional data-recovery service.

Identify exactly when the error appears

Write down the operation, the source and destination, and the point at which the message appears. The operation narrows the hardware path that needs testing.

Where it fails Most relevant path First low-risk test What a repeat failure suggests
Copying to or from an external hard disk or flash drive USB port, cable, hub, enclosure power, source drive, or destination drive Try a different cable and a different computer USB port, preferably a rear motherboard port; remove unpowered hubs The enclosure, drive, source media, or destination may be failing if the same file fails after substitutions
Windows Backup Backup destination, source volume, Volume Shadow Copy components, or Windows Backup configuration Confirm the destination is available, then check the listed services and run System File Checker A persistent failure after service and destination checks can indicate disk or filesystem damage
CD/DVD burning Blank disc, optical drive, burner firmware, write speed, or the files being staged Use a new disc from another batch and select a slower supported speed Repeated failures with multiple discs point toward the burner or its firmware
Windows installation Installation DVD/USB, optical drive or USB port, target disk, or installation media image Recreate or replace the installation media and test another port or drive Failure on known-good media and another port can indicate the target disk or controller
Copying between internal volumes Source or destination disk, SATA connection, controller, or filesystem Test a different folder and read the source before writing to it; back up data first Errors on unrelated files or repeated system freezes warrant drive diagnostics and recovery planning

Use one-variable-at-a-time hardware tests

Change only one part of the path between attempts. If you replace the cable, port, computer, and media simultaneously, you will not know which change mattered.

External USB storage

  1. Safely eject the device, shut down any application using it, and reconnect it directly to the computer instead of through a hub.
  2. Try another USB port. A Microsoft support report describes a copy failure that stopped when the external hard disk was moved to another port; treat that result as a diagnostic substitution, not a guarantee.
  3. Try a different, known-good USB cable of the correct type. A damaged or marginal cable can allow the drive to appear in Explorer but fail under sustained transfer.
  4. If the device has a separate power adapter, connect it directly to a reliable outlet. Bus-powered portable drives may need a powered hub or a second USB power lead approved for that model.
  5. Test the same device on another Windows computer. If it fails there with the same file or operation, the device, enclosure, or cable is more suspect than the original Windows 7 installation.
  6. Test a different known-good drive on the original port. If another drive works, avoid further writes to the suspect device until its data is secured.

Do not assume that a drive-letter change fixes an I/O failure. It only changes how Windows names the volume; it does not repair a failing connection or disk.

Internal disks and SATA connections

Shut down the computer and disconnect power before opening a desktop case. Reseat the SATA data and power connectors, then test with a replacement SATA data cable if one is available. For a laptop, do not open the chassis unless you can do so safely without voiding a warranty; use an external enclosure or a technician for testing instead. Check whether the disk disappears from BIOS or from Windows Disk Management. A disk that vanishes at the firmware level has a hardware, power, or controller problem that Windows commands cannot repair.

CDs and DVDs

  1. Inspect the disc for scratches, cracks, fingerprints, or contamination. Clean from the center outward with a soft lint-free cloth; do not use circular scrubbing.
  2. Try a new blank disc from a different brand or manufacturing batch. A defective batch can produce identical errors even when the burner is healthy.
  3. Select a slower write speed than the maximum offered by the software. Microsoft support specifically recommends a slower speed when the drive or media does not support the selected rate.
  4. Confirm that the burner is recognized in Device Manager and that its firmware is current according to the computer or drive manufacturer’s documentation.
  5. Burn a small test project. If several known-good discs fail at different speeds, test the same media in another burner before buying more discs.

A disc that fails only near the end of a long burn can indicate marginal media, vibration, heat, or a laser that cannot maintain write quality. Preserve the original files elsewhere rather than repeatedly attempting the same burn.

Windows installation media

If the error appears while installing Windows 7, the installer media may be unreadable. For a DVD, clean it and try another disc or optical drive. For USB installation media, recreate it from a verified Windows image, use another USB flash drive, and try a different USB port. Disconnect unnecessary external storage during setup so the installer cannot select the wrong destination. If installation fails at the same percentage with different media and ports, test the target disk and memory, and check the disk’s cables or enclosure.

Check the disk after your data is safe

Windows 7 includes CHKDSK. It can report filesystem problems, repair logical errors, and locate unreadable sectors. Microsoft warns that when CHKDSK tries to repair bad sectors, data located in those sectors may be lost, and a repair can take a long time. Run it only after protecting important files.

Read-only inspection

  1. Click Start, type cmd, right-click cmd.exe, and choose Run as administrator.
  2. Enter chkdsk X:, replacing X: with the affected drive letter.
  3. Read the report. It may identify filesystem inconsistencies or unreadable portions without requesting a repair.

Close the Command Prompt with exit. If the report shows serious problems, copy data before proceeding.

Logical repair with /f

For a backed-up volume, run chkdsk X: /f. Windows may schedule the check for the next restart when the volume is in use. Accept the schedule only when you can leave the computer running and understand that the volume will be unavailable during the check.

Bad-sector scan and recovery with /r

chkdsk X: /r looks for unreadable sectors and attempts to recover readable information. It performs the functions of /f and can take hours, especially on a large or failing disk. Do not interrupt it unless the computer is at risk of overheating or losing power. If the disk is making mechanical noises, repeatedly disconnecting, or becoming slower, professional recovery is safer than an extended repair scan.

Repair Windows Backup-specific failures

If 0x8007045D occurs only in Control Panel > System and Security > Backup and Restore (Windows 7), first verify that the backup destination has enough free space and remains connected for the entire job. Try a different destination disk after protecting existing backup sets. A destination that works for ordinary small files but fails during a long backup may be losing power or dropping its connection under sustained load.

Next, check the services used by shadow-copy and backup operations:

  1. Click Start, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Locate Volume Shadow Copy, Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider, Remote Procedure Call (RPC) (shown as RPCSS internally), COM+ Event System, and System Event Notification Service. Confirm that required services are not disabled and that their dependency services can start.
  3. Check the Windows Backup component and its task configuration. If a service refuses to start, record the exact error instead of repeatedly forcing it.
  4. Restart the computer, reconnect the destination directly, and run a small backup test before attempting a full image or scheduled job.

Third-party security, encryption, or disk-filter software can also interfere with backup access. Temporarily use the vendor’s documented troubleshooting mode only if you can maintain protection and understand what is being disabled; restore normal protection immediately after the test.

Run System File Checker

System File Checker can replace damaged protected Windows files. It will not repair a bad cable, failing disk, or defective optical disc, so use it for a backup-specific or broader Windows symptom rather than as the first response to a single external-drive failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Click Start, type cmd, right-click cmd.exe, and select Run as administrator.
  2. Run sfc /scannow and wait for verification to reach 100 percent.
  3. Restart Windows and repeat the operation that produced the error.

If SFC reports files it could not repair, save the message and check whether the failure is limited to Backup. Do not delete protected files manually. A damaged Windows installation may require Windows 7 recovery media, but create a current data backup first.

Use Event Viewer to correlate the failure

Event Viewer can show whether Windows logged a disk, controller, or filesystem event at the same time as 0x8007045D.

  1. Click Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer.
  2. Open Windows Logs > System.
  3. Filter or inspect entries around the failure time for sources such as Disk, Ntfs, storahci, atapi, or a USB controller.
  4. Record the event ID, device name, and timestamp. Repeated resets or bad-block messages strengthen the case for a hardware or connection fault.

Event Viewer does not prove which physical component is bad. Use it together with the substitution tests: another port, cable, computer, drive, or disc.

Know when the hardware is probably failing

Escalate when the same error follows the device across known-good cables, ports, and computers; when multiple discs fail in different burners; or when a disk produces repeated bad-block events, freezes Explorer, disappears, or makes unusual mechanical sounds. Stop repeated writes, keep the device powered only when necessary to recover data, and use professional recovery for irreplaceable files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the data is backed up and the device is under warranty, document the tests and replace the failed drive, enclosure, optical drive, or cable through the manufacturer. A replacement is justified by repeatable isolation, not by the hexadecimal code alone.

Prevent another 0x8007045D incident

  • Keep at least two copies of important files on separate storage devices; a backup that has never been tested is not a dependable backup.
  • Use short, undamaged USB cables and connect high-power drives to a stable powered port.
  • Eject removable media through Windows before unplugging it.
  • Use reputable optical media and a conservative burn speed for archival discs.
  • Periodically test that backup files can be opened or restored.
  • Investigate early signs such as slow transfers, repeated disconnects, or filesystem warnings instead of waiting for a complete failure.

After these manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut for Windows 7, 8, 10, and 11 that can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, clean temporary and cache files, check selected Windows settings and missing updates, and provide tools such as a real-time boost, file shredder, and app-crash log. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary and no tool repairs every I/O failure or crash. A free trial by category lasts at least two days before a paid subscription.
