0x800704D is not a complete, documented Windows Update error code. Do not choose a repair based on those seven hexadecimal characters alone. First copy the full code and message, then note which program displays it: Windows Update, a browser, Microsoft Store, Windows Setup, or a media application. A single missing digit can change the correct fix completely.
Why 0x800704D cannot be diagnosed yet
Windows error codes are hexadecimal values. The string 0x800704D is shorter than the documented codes normally used for the nearby Windows Update problems people commonly mean, such as 0x80070422 and 0x800706D9. Microsoft’s current Windows Update catalog does not list 0x800704D as a standalone code, and there is no authoritative Microsoft definition that assigns it one specific cause.

The final digit or digits matter. For example, 0x80070422 identifies a disabled service condition, while 0x800706D9 is associated with an update download stuck at 0% when the Windows Defender Firewall service is disabled. Those are different failures with different repairs. Treating the incomplete string as either one can make troubleshooting less effective.

Step 1: Reproduce the error and capture its context
- Repeat the action that failed once, without changing settings. If it is an update, open the Windows Update screen and start the download again. If it is a file or media operation, open the same file or application again.
- Use a screenshot or write down the entire message. Windows may display a longer value such as
0x80070422or0x800706D9even when a search result or forum post shortened it to0x800704D. - Identify the component reporting the problem. A code shown by Windows Update should be investigated as an update or service issue. The same-looking text in a media player is not automatically a Windows Update failure.
- Search or seek support using the complete code and exact message. Microsoft advises using Windows Help or support for unlisted activation or system codes rather than guessing from a partial value.
Step 2: If the complete code is 0x80070422
Microsoft labels 0x80070422 ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED. In the Windows Update context, it means the Windows Update service is stopped, disabled, or otherwise not running. Check that service directly.
Check Windows Update in Services
- Sign in with an account that can change system services.
- Press
Windows+R, typeservices.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services list, locate Windows Update.
- Read the Status and Startup type columns. A startup type of Disabled prevents the service from starting.
- Open the service’s Properties. If it is disabled, choose a non-disabled startup option available on your installation, apply the change, and use Start if the service is stopped.
- Close Services, restart Windows, and try the download again.
If the service cannot start, note the exact message Windows gives you. That secondary message is more useful than the shortened code and may indicate a permissions, dependency, or system-file problem. Do not substitute the Windows Defender Firewall service steps below unless the full code actually identifies that issue.

Step 3: If the complete code is 0x800706D9 and the download is stuck at 0%
Microsoft documents 0x800706D9 with an update download that remains at 0% when the Windows Defender Firewall service is disabled. This is a separate code from 0x80070422, even though both can involve a service that is not running.
Verify the Windows Defender Firewall service
- Press
Windows+R, enterservices.msc, and press Enter. - Find Windows Defender Firewall in the list. On some Windows 8 installations, the service name or display wording can vary slightly; use the entry that clearly identifies the Windows firewall.
- Open its Properties and check whether the service is disabled or stopped.
- If it is disabled, select a startup option that permits the service to run, apply the setting, and start the service when Windows offers that control.
- Restart the computer and retry Windows Update. Record any new service error instead of reverting to the abbreviated
0x800704Ddescription.
Do not disable the firewall to make a download proceed. The documented association is with the firewall service being disabled, so the safer direction is to restore the service’s normal operation.

Step 4: Repair component-store or system-file corruption when Windows reports it
Use this branch only when Windows reports component-store corruption, damaged system files, or a related servicing failure. Microsoft documents Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) and System File Checker (SFC) for those conditions.
- Save open work and sign in with an administrator account.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt. On Windows 8, move to the lower-left corner, right-click to open the system menu, choose Command Prompt (Admin), and approve the permission prompt. If that menu is unavailable, search for
cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and choose Run as administrator. - Run this command exactly, including spaces and the forward slash:
Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth - Wait for DISM to finish. The operation can take time; do not close the window merely because progress pauses.
- When DISM completes, run:
Sfc.exe /Scannow - Restart Windows after both commands finish, then retry the original download.
These commands address the relevant corruption cases; they do not define or decode the incomplete string 0x800704D. If either command reports an error, preserve that complete result for support rather than repeatedly rerunning unrelated fixes.

Step 5: Use the official Windows download route
Microsoft’s Download Center directs users to Windows Update for operating-system downloads. Start from the Windows Update path built into the installation or from Microsoft’s official download pages, and verify that the edition and architecture match the computer.
- Do not use a third-party “error-fix” downloader that promises to identify or replace a missing Windows component.
- Do not download a replacement system file from an unverified file-sharing site.
- Keep the complete error message with the download source you used. A code from Windows Update is not automatically valid evidence about a browser download or a media file.
- If you are installing from media rather than using Windows Update, record that distinction when seeking help; setup and update failures can follow different repair paths.
When the message appears in a media player or while opening a local file
A Microsoft Q&A discussion reports the exact short string in a media context, where community replies raised possible input/output problems, file corruption, or disk-health issues. That discussion is community guidance, not a formal Microsoft definition of 0x800704D.

Separate a file problem from a Windows Update problem
- Write down the media application’s name and the complete message it shows.
- Try a different, known-good file in the same application. If only one file fails, the file or its storage location is more suspect than Windows Update.
- Copy the affected file to another healthy location and test the copy. A failure that follows the file points toward corruption; a failure confined to one drive or removable device points toward storage or I/O trouble.
- Check the drive and connection before repeatedly repairing Windows services. For an external device, reconnect it directly and test another port or cable where practical.
- If the application produces a longer error code, use that code and the application name when consulting Microsoft support or the application maker.
Do not apply the Windows Update service or firewall remedies simply because the characters look similar. The program that displays the message is one of the primary diagnostic clues.

If the download still fails after the matching repair
- Confirm that the full code has not changed after the restart. A new code means the next failure has a different cause.
- Confirm which application is reporting the error. Windows Update, Windows Setup, a browser, Microsoft Store, and a media player should not be treated as interchangeable.
- Record the exact service status or command output you observed, rather than only saying that a “Windows fix” failed.
- Use the complete code and message in Windows Help or Microsoft support. Microsoft does not provide a reliable repair mapping for the unlisted short string by itself.
- If the issue concerns obtaining Windows installation files, stay with Microsoft’s official download and Windows Update routes instead of third-party repair-download sites.
