0x8007422 is not defined in Microsoft’s published Windows error tables, so verify the characters before applying a code-specific fix. A Microsoft Q&A report associates this text with Microsoft Store downloads and Minecraft sign-in, but that is a user report rather than an official definition. The safest approach is to identify the app showing the message, record your Windows build, and follow the branch for Microsoft Store or Windows Update. Do not substitute the similar-looking 0x80070422 remedy unless your screen actually shows 0x80070422.
What 0x8007422 means—and why the exact text matters
There is no authoritative Microsoft definition for 0x8007422 in the Windows error tables covered by Microsoft’s documentation. That makes a typing or transcription error plausible, especially when the code was copied from a game launcher, a Store dialog, or a screenshot. The only specific context documented for this exact string is a Microsoft Q&A thread in which Microsoft Store would not download content and Minecraft sign-in was affected. Because the thread is community-reported, it does not prove that every 0x8007422 message has the same cause.

Several nearby codes look similar. Microsoft documents 0x80070422 as ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED, a condition in which the Windows Update service is stopped or disabled. That is a different number from 0x8007422. A service fix can be appropriate for 0x80070422, but applying it to an unverified code can send you down the wrong path.
Use the app that displays the message as your first diagnostic clue:

- Microsoft Store, Xbox, or Minecraft download/sign-in: start with the Store branch.
- Settings, Windows Update, or an update-installation dialog: use the Windows Update branch.
- A different game, launcher, or system component: collect its exact wording and do not assume either branch applies.
If the code is shown in a photo or copied by hand, compare every character with the original screen. Distinguish zero from the letter O, and check whether the text contains six or seven hexadecimal characters after the leading 0x.
Before changing Windows, record the failure
These checks take only a few minutes and prevent you from troubleshooting the wrong component.
- Write down the application. Note whether the dialog came from Microsoft Store, the Xbox/Minecraft experience, Settings, Windows Update, or another program. Record what you were doing: downloading a game, signing in, checking for updates, or installing an update.
- Copy the complete message. Include any secondary text, a button label, and the exact code. A screenshot is useful if the message disappears after a restart.
- Record the Windows edition and build. Press
Win+R, typewinver, and press Enter. Save the version and OS build shown in the About Windows dialog. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance asks users to identify this information because steps and support status depend on the Windows release. - Note recent changes. Record newly installed updates, security software, account changes, storage changes, or a recent system restore. This information helps support personnel distinguish a Store problem from a broader Windows problem.
- Protect your data before advanced commands. Create a restore point or make a current backup before re-registering an application package in PowerShell. The reset and troubleshooter steps are comparatively reversible; package-registration commands change how Windows registers the Store app.
Do not delete Store folders, edit the registry, or disable security services merely because a forum post lists those actions. None is necessary to establish whether this particular code belongs to Store or Windows Update.
Microsoft Store or Minecraft download branch
Choose this branch when the message appears while Microsoft Store is downloading a game or app, or when the reported symptom is a Minecraft/Xbox sign-in or Store-content failure. The first action is the least invasive and is the community remedy associated with the exact code.
1. Reset the Microsoft Store cache with wsreset
- Close the Store window and any download dialog.
- Press
Win+Rto open Run. - Type
wsresetand press Enter. - Wait while Windows resets the Store cache. A blank command window may remain open for a while; do not close it immediately.
- When the Microsoft Store reopens, sign in with the account that owns the game or app and try the download again.
This command is specifically suggested in the Microsoft Q&A discussion associated with 0x8007422. It resets Store cache data; it does not establish an official meaning for the code and it is not a guarantee that a download or sign-in problem will be repaired.
2. Re-register Microsoft Store only if the reset does not help
A reply in the same community discussion suggests re-registering the Store package. Treat this as community advice, not as an official code-specific fix. Use it only after documenting the error and creating a restore point or backup.
- Open Start and search for PowerShell.
- Right-click Windows PowerShell and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Paste this command exactly, then press Enter:
Get-AppxPackage -allusers Microsoft.WindowsStore | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation) AppXManifest.xml"} - Wait for the prompt to return. Red text indicates that PowerShell reported an error; copy the complete text instead of repeatedly running the command.
- Restart Windows, open Microsoft Store, sign in, and test the original download.
The command must point to the Store package’s AppXManifest.xml. If your copied command contains a different path, missing quotation marks, or an extra character, stop and correct it rather than guessing. If the package is missing or PowerShell reports a deployment error, record that output for support.
3. Test the Store path without changing unrelated settings
- Try opening the Store home page and the specific game page separately. A page that opens but will not download points to a different stage than a Store that will not launch.
- Check whether the account shown in Store is the account that purchased or claimed the game. Do not remove an account as a troubleshooting experiment if you need its saved credentials.
- Retry once after the restart. Repeatedly cancelling and restarting a download can make it harder to identify whether the original error is still present.
If the Store still shows 0x8007422, capture the exact dialog, the winver result, and whether wsreset changed the behavior. Those details are more useful than simply reporting that “the Store is broken.”
Windows Update branch
Use this branch only when the message appears in Windows Update or Settings, or when the symptom is that Windows cannot check for or install updates. Microsoft’s guidance emphasizes the built-in troubleshooter, a restart, adequate free disk space, and an enabled Windows Update service.
1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose Update & Security, then Troubleshoot.
- Select Additional troubleshooters.
- Choose Windows Update, select Run the troubleshooter, and follow the prompts.
- Apply any recommended change, restart the computer, and try Windows Update again.
The labels can vary slightly by Windows 10 build. If you do not see the exact path, use Settings search for Troubleshoot settings and look for the Windows Update troubleshooter.

2. Restart and check free disk space
Restart Windows after the troubleshooter finishes, even if it did not report a repair. Then open Settings > System > Storage and check the system drive. Windows Update needs room to download and stage files; a nearly full drive can make an update fail without the service itself being disabled. Remove only files you recognize, and keep personal files backed up before a large cleanup.

- Press
Win+R, typeservices.msc, and press Enter. - Find Windows Update in the list.
- Open its properties and check the current service status. If it is stopped, select Start.
- Check the startup setting. Do not disable the service; Windows Update needs it available when updates are requested.
- Close the Services window, restart Windows, and run Windows Update again.
If the service refuses to start, note the exact error shown by Services and the Windows build from winver. Do not substitute a registry edit or a downloaded script for that evidence.
Do not confuse 0x8007422 with 0x80070422
Microsoft Learn labels 0x80070422 ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED and explains that the problem occurs when the Windows Update service is not running. The documented mitigation is to check whether that service is running. This information is relevant only when the screen actually says 0x80070422.
The strings differ by more than one character, and the official table does not define 0x8007422. If your original screenshot says 0x80070422, follow the Windows Update service check above. If it says 0x8007422, return to the app-identification step rather than assuming the service is the cause.
How to choose the next action
| Action | Affected component | Evidence level | Reversibility | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
wsreset |
Microsoft Store cache | Community advice tied to a 0x8007422 Store report | Low-risk cache reset | Store download or Minecraft sign-in symptoms |
| Store package re-registration | Microsoft Store app registration | Community advice in the same discussion | Less reversible; create a restore point first | Only after wsreset fails and the Store remains the confirmed source |
| Windows Update troubleshooter | Windows Update | Official Microsoft guidance | Generally reversible; review proposed changes | Update checks or installations fail |
| Restart and free-space check | Update download and staging | Official Microsoft guidance | Low-risk | Updates fail, especially on a nearly full system drive |
| Windows Update service check | Windows Update service | Official guidance; directly documented for 0x80070422 | Service setting change | The service is stopped, disabled, or the code is confirmed as 0x80070422 |
This sequence deliberately separates Store and Windows Update. A successful Store reset cannot repair a disabled Windows Update service, and starting the service cannot explain a Store-only cache failure.

When the manual steps do not resolve the error
Collect a useful escalation package
Before contacting Microsoft, the game publisher, or paid support, assemble:
- The exact hexadecimal code and full message text.
- The application that displayed it and the action that triggered it.
- The Windows edition, version, and build from
winver. - Whether a restart,
wsreset, the Store re-registration command, or the Windows Update troubleshooter changed the symptom. - Any PowerShell or Services error text, plus the time the failure occurred.
- Recent updates, account changes, storage problems, or newly installed software.
This information lets support determine whether the code was mistyped, whether the Store package is damaged, or whether Windows Update is the actual failing component. It also prevents you from repeating unrelated fixes.
Know when to stop experimenting
Stop after a command produces an unfamiliar deployment or service error, after the Store disappears from Windows, or after an update failure is accompanied by new system instability. Restore the backup or restore point you created before advanced changes, if necessary, and provide the recorded error to support. Do not keep re-registering packages or changing service settings without understanding the resulting message.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Its wording is: “After October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10.” A Store or update error in 2026 therefore occurs on an operating system outside Microsoft’s normal free-support period. That does not prove the error is caused by end of support, but it affects the support options available after the manual checks.
Keep the Windows build in your escalation notes and verify the support status for your specific edition. Do not infer that moving to another Windows version will automatically fix a code whose official meaning has not been established.
