If Windows 7 shows 0x8007422 while checking for updates, first verify the digits. That string does not appear in Microsoft’s official Windows Update error table and is most likely a transposition of 0x80070422. Microsoft defines 0x80070422 as ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED: the Windows Update service is stopped or disabled. Start by checking Windows Update and Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS), then reset update components only if the service fix does not work.
What the 0x8007422 message probably means
The exact string 0x8007422 is not an official entry in Microsoft’s Windows Update error list. A Microsoft Q&A discussion containing that string maps it to 0x80070422, the condition in which Windows Update is not running. A mistyped or misread digit can therefore send you toward the wrong repair if you immediately edit the registry or replace system files.

For this guide, treat the code as a likely 0x80070422 service error until you confirm otherwise. The diagnosis applies when the message appears in Windows Update and refers to a service that cannot start, is disabled, or is not running. If the code appears in another application, the steps below may not address that program’s fault.
Confirm the code, edition and context first
Before changing services, record exactly what Windows reports. This prevents applying an update repair to an unrelated application error.

- Open the screen that displays the error and note whether it is Windows Update, another Microsoft component, or a third-party application.
- Press Win+R, type
winver, and press Enter. - Write down the Windows 7 edition, whether the system is 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64), and the installed service-pack level, especially whether Service Pack 1 is shown.
- Copy the complete message and every code, including leading zeroes. If a later attempt produces a different code, keep it; the new code may identify a separate problem.
If the full message clearly contains a code other than 0x80070422, search for that exact code in Microsoft’s documentation instead of assuming this service diagnosis.
Check Windows Update and BITS in Services
Microsoft describes 0x80070422 as a stopped or disabled Windows Update service. Windows Update also relies on Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) to transfer files in the background, so check both before attempting invasive repairs.
Start or re-enable Windows Update
- Press Win+R, enter
services.msc, and press Enter. Approve an administrator prompt if Windows displays one. - Find Windows Update in the list and double-click it.
- Look at Service status. If it says Stopped, select Start.
- Set Startup type to an enabled mode. On systems that expose trigger-start behavior, Manual is normal; choosing Automatic temporarily can help while troubleshooting.
- Select Apply, then OK. If Windows refuses to start the service, record the accompanying message and continue with the BITS check.
Do not set a service to Disabled as a troubleshooting experiment. A disabled service cannot be started by Windows Update when it is needed.
Check Background Intelligent Transfer Service
- In the same Services window, open Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS).
- If its startup type is Disabled, change it to Manual or another enabled setting offered by your installation.
- Click Start when the service is stopped, then choose Apply and OK.
If either service immediately stops again, note the event or error text rather than repeatedly clicking Start. A damaged update cache, missing dependency, restrictive security policy, or system-file corruption can cause a service to stop.

Restart and test Windows Update
Restart Windows 7 after changing the service settings. A reboot clears a pending service state and reloads dependencies that may not have started correctly.
- Save your work and choose Start > Restart.
- After signing in, open Control Panel and select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Wait for the result and record any new error code. A different code means the original service condition may be fixed and another update problem now needs attention.
If Windows Update completes normally, no cache reset or registry change is necessary.
Run Windows 7’s built-in Windows Update troubleshooter
Use Microsoft’s built-in troubleshooter before manual component surgery. It can detect common service and configuration problems and is easier to reverse than registry edits.

- Open Control Panel.
- Choose Troubleshooting, then Fix problems with Windows Update under System and Security.
- Select Advanced if available and choose Run as administrator so the tool can apply service repairs.
- Allow the scan to finish and read the result details. Apply the proposed fixes, restart if requested, and test Windows Update again.
The troubleshooter may report that it could not repair a problem. That result is diagnostic information, not proof that Windows is permanently damaged; proceed to the cache and system-file checks below.

Reset Windows Update components and its cache
A corrupted download or update database can prevent a correctly configured service from completing. Resetting the cache removes pending downloads so Windows can create fresh working folders. This is more invasive than changing a service but remains reversible if you rename the folders rather than deleting them.
Sign in with an administrator account, close Windows Update, and open Command Prompt as administrator: open Start, type cmd, right-click cmd.exe, and select Run as administrator. Run these commands one at a time:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net stop cryptsvc
ren %windir%SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren %windir%System32catroot2 catroot2.old
net start cryptsvc
net start bits
net start wuauservIf a stop command says the service was not started, continue. If a rename reports that a file is in use, restart Windows, open the elevated Command Prompt again, and repeat the sequence before launching Windows Update. Do not delete the renamed folders while troubleshooting; they preserve a rollback copy and can contain useful logs.

Check and repair protected system files
Windows Update depends on protected Windows components. Run System File Checker after the service and cache checks if the error persists.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt as described above.
- Run
sfc /scannowand wait until verification reaches 100 percent. - Read the final message. It may report that no integrity violations were found, that damaged files were repaired, or that some files could not be repaired.
- Restart Windows and test Windows Update again.
If SFC cannot repair files, preserve the exact output. Windows 7 has fewer servicing options than newer Windows releases; the appropriate DISM operation depends on the edition and servicing state. Use only a Microsoft-documented command for your installation rather than copying an incompatible Windows 10 or Windows 11 command.
Use a clean boot to find software interference
A clean boot is an isolation step when Windows Update works in a minimal environment but fails during a normal startup. It temporarily prevents non-Microsoft startup programs and services from loading; it does not remove them.

- Press Win+R, type
msconfig, and press Enter. - On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then choose Disable all.
- On the Startup tab, disable nonessential startup items.
- Apply the changes and restart. Test Windows Update.
- When testing is complete, return to
msconfigand choose Normal startup, or re-enable the items in groups to identify the conflict.
Do not hide or disable Microsoft services while following this test. If the error disappears in a clean boot, re-enable third-party items methodically; the conflicting program may be security software, a system utility, or another updater.

Install a specific Windows 7 update safely
If you know which update is required, obtain it from Microsoft’s Download Center or Update Catalog, not an unknown mirror. Match all of the following before downloading:
- Architecture: x86 for 32-bit Windows or x64 for 64-bit Windows.
- Service pack: select a package that supports your installed Windows 7 service-pack level.
- Product and language: confirm that the package applies to your edition and language where the listing requires it.
- Prerequisites: read the package details for prerequisite updates and restart requirements.
For example, Microsoft’s KB2707082 Download Center entry, published July 15, 2024, lists Windows 7 and Windows 7 SP1 packages and warns that a restart may be required. The publication date does not make every package suitable for every installation, so use the applicability information on the individual Microsoft listing.
After downloading, verify the file is from Microsoft, close applications, install it with administrator rights, and restart when prompted. If the standalone installer reports that the update is not applicable, do not force it; recheck the architecture, service pack, prerequisites, and whether the update is already installed.

This order favors reversible, Microsoft-supported checks and preserves diagnostic information. Do not jump to registry edits because a service refuses to start; first capture the exact message, run the supported repair tools, and preserve logs.
When the service still will not start
Escalate when Windows Update or BITS remains disabled, stops immediately, or returns a permissions or dependency error after the steps above.
- Record the service’s exact error text, the result of
sfc /scannow, and every new Windows Update code. - Note whether the failure occurs in a clean boot and whether a newly created cache changes the behavior.
- Keep the Windows edition, architecture, and service-pack information from
winver. - Back up personal files before attempting system repair, an in-place reinstall, or any registry change.
- Seek qualified support familiar with legacy Windows 7 servicing. Current Microsoft support pages may focus on Windows 10 or Windows 11, so confirm that advice applies to Windows 7 before running it.
A reinstall should be a last resort, not the first response to a code that usually indicates a disabled service. If an administrator deliberately disabled Windows Update through policy, identify and reverse that policy through the organization responsible for the computer rather than forcing a local setting.

In the common case, it is a mistyped 0x80070422, meaning Windows Update is disabled or not running. Check Windows Update and BITS in services.msc, restart and test, then use the troubleshooter, reset the update cache, run SFC, and isolate third-party interference with a clean boot. For a specific update, use only a Microsoft package that matches your Windows 7 architecture and service-pack level.
