If Windows 8 shows 0X800745D, first copy the code exactly from the dialog. Microsoft’s documented Windows error is 0x8007045D, not 0x800745D. The documented code means ERROR_IO_DEVICE: “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” A single mistyped character changes the search result and can send you toward the wrong repair.

Record the complete message, the operation that failed, and the drive or device involved. Then protect readable files, remove unnecessary hardware, test the connection, check the correct volume with CHKDSK, and repair Windows files when the failure is update-related. Do not replace a drive solely because this code appeared; the code identifies an input/output failure, not the failed component.

Confirm whether the code is 0x800745D or 0x8007045D

The exact spelling 0x800745D is not established in the Microsoft material for Windows 8. The near-match documented by Microsoft is 0x8007045D. Before changing anything, reopen the dialog or check the event or application log and compare every character, including the zero after “0x”.

Write down the failure context

Note what Windows was doing when it stopped:

  • Upgrading Windows 8 to Windows 8.1
  • Copying files to or from an internal drive, USB drive, SD card, or other removable media
  • Creating a backup or system image
  • Reading or burning an optical disc
  • Installing an update or another program

Also record the drive letter shown in the message, if there is one, and whether the same device fails in more than one operation. Those details determine which volume and connection should be tested.

If the dialog truly contains 0x800745D, use that exact value when searching the Windows logs and when contacting the device or software maker. The instructions below apply to the documented 0x8007045D error and to the same type of failure when the code was transcribed incorrectly.

What 0x8007045D means

Microsoft Answers Support Engineer Diana describes 0x8007045D as ERROR_IO_DEVICE: “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” Windows requested data from a source or tried to write data to a destination, and the operation could not be completed through the device path.

The device path can include more than the disk itself. It may involve the source drive, destination drive, USB port, cable, hub, adapter, removable card, optical disc, disc burner, storage controller, or a driver. Software running during an upgrade or backup can also interfere with access. Consequently, the code alone cannot tell you which part is defective.

Likely causes by the operation that failed

Where the error appears What to investigate first Useful confirmation
File copy or move The source volume, destination volume, cable, USB port, or removable media Retry with a known-good port or destination and see whether the same drive letter fails
Windows 8 to 8.1 upgrade External hardware, storage errors, drivers, or third-party startup services Disconnect nonessential devices, update drivers, and retry after a clean boot
Backup or system-image creation Unreadable sectors on the source or destination volume, or a failing backup device Run CHKDSK on the implicated source and destination volumes, then retry
Optical-disc read or burn Defective disc media, the burner, or an unsupported burn condition Try another disc or brand, check the burner, and use a slower supported burn speed
Windows Update or broad system corruption Damaged component-store or system files in addition to the storage path Run DISM first, then SFC, and retry the update

A device that fails in several unrelated operations is more concerning than a one-time failure involving one disc, cable, or port. Even then, test the simplest replaceable part first and preserve data before stressing a suspect disk.

Do this before repair: preserve your data

If the affected drive still opens, copy important documents, photos, saves, and other irreplaceable files to a separate known-good destination. A backup or repair operation can read a large portion of a disk and may expose additional unreadable areas. Do not use the failing drive as the only place for the copy.

When a file copy stops on one item, note the file name and location. If only a small set of files cannot be read, copy the unaffected data first and avoid repeatedly retrying the same damaged area. If the disk makes unusual mechanical sounds, disconnect it after the essential copy and seek professional data-recovery advice rather than repeatedly powering it on.

Step-by-step fix for 0x8007045D on Windows 8

1. Close the failed operation and restart once

Cancel the copy, backup, upgrade, or burn job. Close programs that may be using the affected drive and restart Windows. A restart clears a temporary connection or lock, but it does not repair bad sectors; continue with the tests below if the error returns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Remove unnecessary hardware

Shut down the operation and unplug nonessential printers, scanners, USB storage, hubs, card readers, and other peripherals. Microsoft’s Windows upgrade guidance specifically recommends removing external hardware and trying again. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection required for the task, and the storage device being tested.

For a USB or removable drive, connect it directly to a different USB port rather than through a hub. If available, test a different cable, adapter, or known-good computer only after securing the files you can still read. A successful retry on another port or cable points to the connection path, not necessarily the disk.

3. Identify the source and destination volumes

Determine which side of the operation was being read and which side was being written. In a file copy, the source is the drive containing the original file; the destination is where you were copying it. In a system-image job, both the source Windows volume and the destination backup volume can produce the same code.

Open File Explorer and confirm the drive letters. Do not guess: running a disk check against the wrong letter can inspect an unrelated volume. If the volume disappears, repeatedly disconnects, or cannot be opened, treat the connection or hardware as suspect and prioritize data preservation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Update the relevant device drivers

Install current drivers from the computer, motherboard, storage-controller, USB-device, or other hardware manufacturer. Match the driver to the exact Windows 8 edition and hardware model. Restart after installation and repeat the same operation.

Driver updates are especially relevant when the error began after changing a storage adapter, connecting a new device, or starting a Windows 8.1 upgrade. A driver update cannot repair physically damaged media, so a continuing error should be tested with another port, cable, or device rather than repeatedly reinstalling the same driver.

5. Test with a clean boot during an upgrade

Third-party startup programs and services can interfere with an upgrade. Use Windows’ System Configuration tool to perform a clean boot, restart, and run the upgrade again with non-Microsoft startup items and services temporarily disabled. Record what you disable so it can be restored after the test.

If the upgrade succeeds in a clean boot, re-enable items in groups and retry until the interfering program or service is isolated. If the error remains with external hardware removed and a clean boot, storage integrity and drivers become more likely explanations.

6. Run CHKDSK on the implicated volume

Open an elevated Command Prompt: from the Windows 8 Start screen, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and choose Run as administrator. Confirm the drive letter before running either command:

chkdsk E: /f

Replace E: with the source or destination volume involved in the failure. The /f switch asks Windows to correct logical file-system errors. For a backup or system-image failure, Microsoft guidance specifically calls for checking the source or destination volume with CHKDSK /R:

chkdsk E: /r

The /r check includes the logical repair and searches for unreadable sectors, so it can take considerably longer. Run it on the volume implicated by the operation, not automatically on every disk.

If Windows says the volume is in use, allow the check to be scheduled for the next restart, then reboot and let it finish. Do not interrupt the process unless the computer is unresponsive for an extended period. Maintain a separate backup first: repairing file-system records or handling bad sectors can affect files that are already damaged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After CHKDSK completes, read the result in the command window or the Windows event log, then retry the original operation once. A clean check does not prove that a cable, controller, or device is healthy; it only reduces the likelihood that the tested volume has a correctable file-system problem.

7. Repair Windows component and system files for update failures

If 0x8007045D appears during Windows Update, an upgrade, or several Windows operations, repair the component store and protected system files. In an elevated Command Prompt, run:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Wait for DISM to finish. Then run:

sfc /scannow

Restart Windows after both commands complete and retry the update or upgrade. These commands address Windows-file corruption; they do not replace a failing disk, USB cable, disc, or storage controller. If DISM or SFC itself reports that it cannot read files, return to the storage and connection checks.

8. Handle optical-disc errors as a separate branch

When the error occurs while reading or burning a disc, try another disc and, if possible, another brand. A defective disc can produce the same code as a burner problem. Check that the burner is recognized and that the media is supported. Microsoft support guidance also recommends using a slower supported burn speed when burning fails.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not keep sacrificing discs while the drive is reporting repeated read or write errors. Test one known-good disc after checking the burner and its connection. If several known-good discs fail in the same drive, the burner or its driver is more suspect than the media.

Choose the next test from the pattern of results

Result Most useful next action
The error disappears with another USB port or cable Use the working connection and replace the faulty cable, hub, or adapter after confirming the result
Only one removable card or drive fails Copy readable data, test the device directly, and avoid treating the computer’s internal disk as the cause without evidence
Both source and destination fail CHKDSK or disappear Stop repeated retries, preserve data from whichever volume remains readable, and investigate the storage hardware or controller
CHKDSK repairs errors and the operation then succeeds Keep a current backup and monitor the volume; a logical repair does not establish that the hardware is permanently healthy
The upgrade works only after a clean boot Re-enable startup items and services in groups to identify the interfering software
Only optical burns fail Test different supported media, the burner, and a slower burn speed
DISM and SFC complete but I/O errors continue Focus on the source or destination device, connection, driver, or removable media rather than repeating system-file repairs

When not to replace a drive yet

Replacing hardware before identifying the failing side can waste money and can destroy access to files that are still recoverable. The code does not distinguish an internal disk from a USB adapter, cable, optical disc, or destination drive. Replace or service a component after a controlled comparison—such as the same drive failing on a different known-good connection, or several known-good devices failing through the same controller.

If the drive is intermittently detected, becomes read-only, reports a capacity of zero, or produces repeated I/O errors during multiple operations, stop using it for nonessential tests. Preserve the readable data first. CHKDSK is a file-system repair tool, not a substitute for a backup or a guaranteed data-recovery method.

Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 upgrade checklist

  1. Verify whether the dialog says 0x8007045D and record the complete message.
  2. Back up readable personal files to a separate destination.
  3. Disconnect nonessential external hardware.
  4. Check the upgrade media or download source and retry once.
  5. Install current manufacturer drivers for storage and connected devices.
  6. Perform a clean boot and retry the upgrade.
  7. Run CHKDSK on the Windows source volume and any destination volume involved.
  8. Run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth, then sfc /scannow.
  9. Restart and retry. If the error remains, test the storage path rather than repeatedly launching the upgrade.

Backup and system-image checklist

  1. Identify both the source Windows volume and the destination backup volume.
  2. Copy important files manually while both volumes remain readable.
  3. Disconnect unrelated USB devices and connect the backup destination directly.
  4. Run chkdsk against the source and destination letters, using /f for logical repairs and /r when an unreadable-sector check is required.
  5. Retry the image after the checks finish.
  6. If the same volume fails again, use a different known-good destination and preserve the original data before further stress testing.

What the error does not tell you

  • It does not prove that Windows is infected or that malware caused the failure.
  • It does not identify a specific disk, cable, port, or driver.
  • It does not guarantee that replacing a drive will fix the operation.
  • It does not establish how common the problem is; no authoritative Windows 8 prevalence or success-rate statistic is available.
  • It does not mean that every file on the volume is unreadable. Copy what remains accessible before repair.

Use the exact code and the operation that failed when asking for further support. “0x8007045D during a system-image backup on destination E:” is substantially more actionable than “Windows has an I/O error.”
