How to Fix 0x800745D When Windows 11 System Restore Fails

If Windows 11 shows 0x800745D while System Restore is running, start with the least-destructive recovery path: back up your files, repair Windows with DISM and System File Checker, then retry System Restore from Windows or from the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). If the failure began after an update, try Uninstall updates before considering a reset or reinstall.

Microsoft does not define 0x800745D in its reviewed Windows support documentation. One third-party result broadly associates the code with invalid system entries left by software installation or removal, but that explanation is unverified. Treat the code as a symptom of a failed recovery operation, not as a confirmed diagnosis.

What 0x800745D means during a Windows 11 restore

System Restore is intended to roll back Windows system files and settings to an earlier restore point while leaving personal files in place. It is available in both Windows 10 and Windows 11. A successful restore can, however, remove or roll back applications, drivers, updates and settings installed after the selected restore point.

The code itself does not identify one guaranteed cause. The restore operation can fail because Windows component files are damaged, the restore point is incomplete, a service or driver prevents the rollback, the recovery environment cannot access the Windows volume, or an update has changed the system. A failed restore does not by itself prove that your personal files are corrupted or that malware is present.

Do not substitute Microsoft error 0x8007045B for 0x800745D. Microsoft documents 0x8007045B in connection with encrypted files and ERROR_SHUTDOWN_IN_PROGRESS; that is a different code with a different documented context.

Choose the safest recovery path first

Use this order unless a step is impossible. It preserves the most data and avoids reinstalling Windows unnecessarily.

Option When to use it Personal files Apps, drivers and updates Extra requirement Destructiveness
Repair Windows files with DISM and SFC Windows still starts and you can open an elevated Command Prompt Retained Unchanged Administrator account; internet access can help DISM obtain repair files Lowest
System Restore from Windows Windows starts and at least one usable restore point exists Retained by design System files, settings, drivers, updates and some applications can roll back A restore point Low
System Restore from WinRE Windows will not start or the normal restore wizard fails Retained by design Same rollback behavior as System Restore in Windows BitLocker recovery key may be required Low
Uninstall updates The problem started immediately after a Windows update Retained The selected update is removed; some updates cannot be uninstalled WinRE may be required Low to moderate
Reset this PC Windows remains unusable after non-destructive repair attempts Choose whether to keep or remove them Apps and settings are removed; Windows is reinstalled Backup; power and sufficient storage Moderate to high
Reinstall with installation media Built-in recovery is unavailable or Windows installation is severely damaged Depends on the keep option; a clean install removes them Keep choices vary; a clean install removes apps and settings Bootable USB installation media and backups High

Before changing recovery settings, protect your data

System Restore is designed not to remove personal files, but later options such as Reset this PC and a clean installation can. Copy documents, photos, saved games, browser exports and other irreplaceable data to another drive or a cloud location before proceeding. If Windows is unstable, copy the files while it still boots; if it does not boot, use another computer or a bootable recovery environment to access the drive.

  • Keep the computer connected to AC power during every repair or reset.
  • Record the names of programs and devices installed after the restore point you plan to use.
  • If device encryption or BitLocker is enabled, locate the recovery key before entering WinRE.
  • Disconnect unnecessary USB devices, docks and external drives so the restore environment sees the intended Windows disk.

Step 1: Repair Windows system files while Windows still boots

Microsoft recommends repairing the component store with Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM), then checking protected system files with System File Checker (SFC). Run them in that order.

  1. Sign in with an administrator account.
  2. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  3. Enter this command and press Enter:
    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  4. Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause; component repair can take time.
  5. Run:
    sfc /scannow
  6. When SFC reaches 100 percent, restart Windows.
  7. Retry System Restore. If the same restore point fails, try another point rather than repeatedly selecting the damaged one.

DISM repairs the Windows component store used by other servicing tools; SFC then replaces damaged protected files when matching healthy versions are available. If either command reports that it could not complete, note the exact message. Do not claim success merely because the command window returned to a prompt.

Step 2: Run System Restore from the normal desktop

Use this route when Windows starts normally enough to open Control Panel.

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Recovery, then Open System Restore.
  3. Choose Next to display available restore points. Enable Show more restore points if that option appears.
  4. Select a point dated before the failure began. Choose Scan for affected programs to review applications and drivers that may be removed or rolled back.
  5. Close any listed programs, select Next, review the disk and restore point, then choose Finish.
  6. Confirm the warning and allow Windows to restart without interrupting power.

You can also launch the same wizard directly by pressing Windows key + R, entering rstrui.exe, and pressing Enter. If the wizard opens but returns 0x800745D, stop repeating the same point and continue with WinRE.

Step 3: Run System Restore from Windows Recovery Environment

WinRE uses a separate recovery environment, so it can work when the installed Windows session cannot complete the rollback. Microsoft’s restore path there is Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.

Enter WinRE when Windows still opens

  1. Open Settings > System > Recovery.
  2. Under Advanced startup, choose Restart now.
  3. After the restart, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.

You can also hold Shift while selecting Restart from the Start menu’s power options, then choose the same menu path.

Enter WinRE when Windows will not start

Allow Windows to enter automatic repair after failed starts, then choose Advanced options. If the built-in environment is unavailable, boot from Windows 11 installation media or a recovery drive and select the repair option instead of installing immediately.

Complete the restore in WinRE

  1. Select the Windows installation and sign in if prompted.
  2. Choose a restore point dated before the problem.
  3. Review affected programs when the option is offered.
  4. Start the restore and leave the computer connected to power until it restarts.

An encrypted device may ask for its BitLocker recovery key before WinRE can access the Windows volume. The key is not the same as your normal Windows sign-in password. If you cannot provide it, recovery tools may be unable to unlock the installation.

Step 4: Remove a recent update if that is when the failure began

If the restore error appeared immediately after Windows Update, use WinRE’s Uninstall updates option before resetting Windows.

  1. Enter WinRE.
  2. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall updates.
  3. Choose the available quality-update or feature-update removal option.
  4. Follow the prompts and restart.

This option keeps personal files and installed apps in place, but Windows cannot remove every update. If no removable update is offered, return to Advanced options and try System Restore or Startup Repair. Do not force removal by deleting update files manually.

Step 5: Escalate to Reset this PC only after backups

Reset this PC reinstalls Windows and offers separate retention choices. It is not the same operation as System Restore.

Keep my files

This choice preserves personal files but removes installed applications and resets many settings. You will need to reinstall programs and may need current device drivers afterward. Make a list of license information and installers before starting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove everything

This removes personal files, applications and settings while reinstalling Windows. Select it only after verifying that your backup opens from another device. If the computer is being sold or transferred, use the available drive-cleaning option appropriate to that purpose; do not select it merely as a first troubleshooting step.

  1. Open Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC when Windows works.
  2. Choose Keep my files or Remove everything.
  3. Review the listed consequences and confirm the reset.

If Windows cannot boot, choose Troubleshoot > Reset this PC in WinRE. Keep the recovery key available on an encrypted system.

Step 6: Reinstall Windows with USB installation media when recovery is unavailable

When WinRE is damaged or no recovery option works, a bootable Windows 11 installation media USB flash drive or recovery drive provides a physical fallback. It is bootable recovery/install media, not a code-specific cure.

Use installation media for repair or an in-place reinstall

Boot from the USB, select the language and keyboard layout, and choose Repair your computer to reach WinRE. If you start Windows Setup from inside a working Windows session, the available keep options depend on the edition and setup path; read each screen carefully before confirming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a clean installation only as the final escalation

A clean installation removes personal files, applications and settings from the selected Windows partition. Back up first, verify that the USB boots, and make sure you have activation information and drivers for critical hardware. A clean install is appropriate only when you accept that the existing installation will be replaced.

Build a recovery fallback before the next failure

Microsoft documents both Windows installation media and recovery drives. Create the USB while the computer is healthy, label it, and store it with your BitLocker recovery information. Test that the computer can boot from USB only if you understand the firmware boot-menu process for that device; changing unrelated firmware settings can create a separate startup problem.

What to do when every restore point fails

  • DISM and SFC succeed, but restore still fails: try an older restore point from WinRE. The point itself may be incomplete even when Windows files are healthy.
  • Only one user account fails: sign in with another administrator account if available, then retry. A damaged profile can interfere with the normal wizard.
  • The error appears after every update: remove the latest removable update, pause further updates temporarily, and use Reset this PC only after backing up.
  • WinRE asks for a key: retrieve the BitLocker recovery key before attempting more operations; repeated restarts will not bypass encryption.
  • The computer shuts down during recovery: reconnect AC power, remove nonessential peripherals and repeat from WinRE rather than interrupting a running restore.
  • No recovery environment or USB is available: create or obtain Windows installation media on another computer, then return to the repair path.

If none of these options restores a usable installation, preserve the backup and treat a reinstall as a Windows recovery decision rather than a special fix for 0x800745D. The code has no Microsoft-published, code-specific repair procedure.

As an optional shortcut after the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can look for common Windows problems, clean temporary and cache files, and provide repair and diagnostic features; it runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7. It complements an antivirus and does not replace one, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash. Its free trial is available by category for at least two days before a paid subscription.
