1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA reconnecting YouTube stream is a symptom, not a diagnosis. First check whether OBS is losing frames or its connection, then compare YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages with your encoder settings. If OBS reports dropped frames, test a lower bitrate and a wired network connection; if YouTube flags a configuration issue, fix the specific warning. Change one thing at a time and watch whether the symptoms change.
Find out where the interruption is happening
When the stream reconnects, record the time and check both OBS and YouTube. A reconnect by itself does not prove that YouTube is at fault.
Check OBS while the problem occurs
Watch OBS’s dropped-frames counter and connection indicator. If dropped frames rise as the stream falters, OBS says the connection to the remote server may be unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. OBS cautions that dropping too many frames can disconnect you from the streaming server. See OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide (dated September 30, 2024).
Read YouTube’s stream-health messages
In YouTube Live Control Room, compare the stream-health messages with the time of the OBS interruption. YouTube’s diagnostics can identify configuration categories including bitrate, codec, keyframe frequency, missing or insufficient video, audio, and mismatched primary and backup stream settings. Use the warning actually shown rather than guessing which setting is wrong. The LiveStream configuration-issues reference, last updated September 14, 2026 UTC, defines videoIngestionStarved as YouTube not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming; it also describes gopSizeLong as keyframes being sent less often than the allowed interval.

Work through the likely causes in order
1. Lower bitrate if OBS is dropping frames
Compare the configured video bitrate with sustained upload performance, not just one speed-test result. OBS suggests setting bitrate to 75% of total upload speed as a troubleshooting starting point when frames are dropping. That is OBS guidance, not a guaranteed safety margin or a YouTube requirement; available upload capacity can vary over time and with other traffic on the connection.
YouTube publishes recommended bitrate ranges by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube’s technical recommendations, not measurements of your connection. The figures are from YouTube Help, accessed in 2026.

| Video setting | Codec | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | H.264 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
If you reduce the bitrate, check that the output remains appropriate for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. Run the stream long enough to see whether the same reconnect pattern returns.
2. Match the encoder to YouTube’s requirements
For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube lists constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, with a maximum of four seconds. Its current guidance supports multiple video ingest codecs, so use the published settings for the codec you actually send instead of relying on outdated blanket advice that every stream must use H.264. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions against your output. If you send primary and backup feeds, verify that their parameters match; YouTube identifies mismatches as a configuration issue.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. A protocol change is not a universal cure for reconnects, so treat it as a configuration check rather than a substitute for investigating dropped frames or other health warnings.
3. Test the local network path
If the streaming computer uses Wi-Fi, test a wired Ethernet connection. OBS recommends trying wired networking because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming; a cable is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix. Also check the existing network path:

- Restart the modem and router, then see whether interruptions continue.
- Inspect network cables and other devices sharing the connection.
- Temporarily isolate VPNs, firewalls or security software, and network-optimization utilities as possible sources of interference.
- Check whether network drivers are outdated.
Change one factor at a time so you can tell whether it affected the problem. Replace a cable or other hardware only when checks point to a fault, rather than buying equipment on the assumption that it will stop every reconnect.
4. Escalate with useful evidence
If the encoder and local-network checks do not resolve the issue, contact your ISP. Congestion or routing changes along the ISP’s path may be outside your control. Give support the interruption times, OBS symptoms, and YouTube health messages so it can investigate. OBS says it is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio itself to cause dropped frames; that is not a guarantee that software bugs are impossible, but it makes connection stability a sensible early check.

Test changes without guessing
YouTube advises testing before a live event with audio and movement similar to the actual stream, then monitoring stream health during the event. For a 24/7 channel, apply the same discipline to a controlled test: note the current settings and symptoms, change one variable, and check OBS and YouTube again. The right diagnosis depends on your encoder, operating system, network equipment, configured bitrate, health messages, and ISP route; the reconnect symptom alone cannot identify it. The cited guidance documents general encoder and connection troubleshooting, not a special setting for 24/7 broadcasts or a universal best bitrate, encoder, router, or ISP.
