First make sure your channel is eligible and your clips are cleared for use; then create an encoder stream in YouTube Live Control Room, connect the feed with the stream URL and key, preview it, and monitor the broadcast. For a channel that should keep running with your computer off, a cloud service can run the playlist instead.
Before you start: check channel access and content rights
Confirm YouTube live-stream eligibility
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days to stream. The broadcast must also comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance before you build the channel around a continuous broadcast.
Clear every game, soundtrack, and clip
Make sure you have the necessary rights for the game footage, music, and any third-party material in each recording. Owning a game or recording your own play does not by itself establish that you may use the footage commercially. YouTube says monetization depends on commercial-use rights granted by the game publisher; it also cautions that extended footage simply showing gameplay may not be accepted for monetization. Check each publisher’s license and YouTube’s video game and software content guidance.
Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate. YouTube’s monetization rules apply to live streams, and its reused-content review can apply across the channel. A playlist of repetitive or minimally changed clips can be a monetization risk even when the clips are licensed. Add meaningful original treatment—such as commentary, analysis, context, storytelling, or distinctive editorial selection—rather than assuming that a loop alone will qualify. This can reduce policy risk but cannot guarantee monetization approval. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Prepare a highlights feed that works as a channel
Collect the recordings you have rights to use, then arrange them into a playlist or continuous feed using an encoder or streaming service that supports prerecorded video. A highlights channel benefits from deliberate programming: group clips by game or theme, give viewers context, and use transitions that make a long-running loop feel considered rather than accidental. The playlist and looping controls vary by tool, so test what happens at the end of a video and between clips before scheduling a long run.
YouTube documents encoder streaming for gameplay and recommends testing and monitoring the stream. Its live-streaming tips are a useful starting point for preparing the feed. Keep a copy of the source recordings and, where practical, make an independent local recording of the outgoing broadcast.

Create the YouTube Live broadcast and connect the feed
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or schedule a live stream using an encoder. Set the title, description, category, visibility, and other metadata to accurately describe the highlights channel. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover the broadcast workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. Enter both into the encoder or hosted service that will send your prerecorded feed. Treat the key as a password: anyone with it may be able to send video to your stream. YouTube explains stream settings and key management at Manage live stream settings.
- Start the feed and check the preview. Start the encoder or service, then confirm that video and audio appear in Live Control Room. Check the actual watch page as well as the preview. Fix missing audio, incorrect framing, black frames, or unexpected playlist transitions before making the broadcast public.
- Go live and monitor it. Once the incoming feed looks right, start the broadcast in Live Control Room if the selected workflow requires that step. Keep an eye on stream quality and confirm that the feed continues to advance through the playlist. The exact start and loop controls depend on the encoder or service you choose.
Stream-key safety
Do not post the key in a public document, screen capture, or chat. If it is exposed or you suspect someone else has access, reset it in YouTube’s live-stream settings and update the encoder or service with the replacement.
Choose how the channel will stay on air
The main decision is whether you want to operate an always-on computer yourself or have a hosted service send the video. Compare playlist controls, recovery behavior, local recording, source-file transfer, monitoring, schedule limits, and plan restrictions before committing to a long run. The table distinguishes what is established about each option; it does not imply a universal reliability ranking.

Plan for archives, interruptions, and recovery
Keep an archive you control
YouTube’s current archive guidance, checked October 3, 2026, says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A 24/7 broadcast is longer than that window, so do not rely on YouTube to preserve it as one uninterrupted archive. Keep the source files and, if the broadcast itself matters, record it independently and verify that the recording is growing and intact. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Prepare a recovery path
Decide who will notice a dropped feed, how they will check the encoder or service, and how the broadcast will be restarted. For a local setup, test a restart before the channel depends on unattended operation. For a hosted service, confirm its recovery behavior and monitoring arrangements in the current plan details; provider claims should not be treated as an independent uptime guarantee.

- No preview in Live Control Room: Check that the feed is running and that the encoder or service has the correct stream URL and key. Confirm the broadcast is configured as an encoder stream, then restart the feed and check the preview again.
- The wrong video or no sound appears: Check the selected source files, playlist order, and audio in the outgoing feed. Test the transitions and audio on the watch page before leaving the stream unattended.
- The broadcast stops unexpectedly: Check the encoder or provider status, the internet connection for a local setup, and whether the playlist has ended or encountered a playback issue. Follow the recovery procedure you tested; if YouTube dropped the stream, reconnect using the current key and restart the broadcast as needed.
- YouTube interrupts or replaces the live feed: Review the channel’s copyright notices and the material playing at the time. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content; a match can lead to a placeholder, interruption, or termination. Even licensed material may be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel in Content ID. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
- The broadcast is missing from the archive: If it ran longer than 12 hours, YouTube warns that it may not have captured it. Use an independent recording for future broadcasts and verify the recording while it is being made.
- The channel is not eligible to go live: Confirm channel verification and check whether a live-stream restriction occurred in the last 90 days. Resolve the eligibility issue before scheduling the channel.
Costs and practical checks before launch
A local setup may use a computer and connection you already have, but it requires them to remain available and may need ongoing monitoring. Hosted services avoid that local always-on requirement, but their plan limits and prices differ.
