A 500 Internal Server Error means the server encountered an unexpected condition and could not complete the request. The code identifies a server-side failure, not the cause. The fastest fix is to reproduce the exact request, match its time and request ID to server and application logs, then correct the first exception, configuration error, permission problem, resource exhaustion event or stopped process you find.

Do not start by replacing the error page or repeatedly refreshing. Preserve the evidence first; a generic browser message can hide the details needed to identify the failing layer.

What an HTTP 500 error tells you
HTTP 500 is a catch-all server error. It is returned when the server cannot fulfill a request because of an unexpected condition. A 500 response does not distinguish between application code, web-server configuration, permissions, memory pressure or a failed dependency.
The response may include a request, trace or correlation identifier. Save it exactly as shown. Administrators can use that value, together with the request time, host and path, to locate the matching entries in access, error and application logs.

A 500 is different from a client-side problem. Your browser can display the status, but changing browsers, clearing cookies or refreshing the page will not repair a server process that is throwing an exception or cannot read its configuration. Client testing is useful for confirming scope, not for diagnosing the underlying fault.
First, define the failure’s scope
Before changing code or restarting services, establish precisely what fails. Scope determines whether you should inspect one route, a deployment, a site, or the host itself.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Record one failing request
- Copy the complete URL, including the path and query string.
- Note the HTTP method, such as GET, POST, PUT or DELETE. A route may fail only for one method.
- Record the time in UTC, including seconds if available.
- Save the status line, response headers, response body and any request or correlation ID.
- Record the hostname, deployment or release version, and the user action that produced the error.
A command-line request can preserve headers more clearly than a browser. For example, run curl -i https://example.invalid/path against the affected endpoint, replacing the example address with your own URL. For a non-GET route, reproduce the same method and body that the application received; do not substitute a harmless GET and assume it tests the same code path.
Test more than one route
- Repeat the original request once to confirm that the response is reproducible.
- Request a known healthy route, such as a static asset or health endpoint, if your application provides one.
- Test the failing route from a second network or user account when possible.
- Compare the result before and after the most recent deployment, configuration change or restart.
If every route fails for every user, investigate the site, worker process, host resources and server configuration first. If one endpoint fails while unrelated routes work, prioritize that route’s handler, its inputs and the dependencies it calls. If only one deployment or region fails, compare its configuration and secrets with a working instance.
Use logs to locate the failing layer
The browser’s 500 page is usually the least useful diagnostic artifact. The most valuable evidence is the first server-side exception associated with the request.
Match by time, path and request ID
- Convert the recorded time to the timezone used by each log; keep the original UTC timestamp in your notes.
- Search the web-server access log for the host, path, method and status.
- Use the request or correlation ID, if present, to find the corresponding error entry.
- Follow that event into the application log and capture the exception type, message and complete call stack.
- Check entries immediately before the first failure for a startup error, configuration reload, dependency timeout or process crash.
Preserve the first stack trace rather than only the final “500” line. Later errors can be secondary effects—for example, a process may log repeated failed requests after an import or startup failure already prevented it from initializing.

Separate access records from error records
An access log tells you that a request reached the server, the route, method and status that were returned. An error or application log explains why the response was generated. Use both: an access entry without a matching application exception can indicate a web-server, rewrite or process-state problem, while an application exception without the expected access entry can indicate a logging, routing or proxy boundary issue.
Protect sensitive log data
When sharing an incident, redact passwords, session tokens, API keys, personal data and full request bodies that contain secrets. Keep the timestamp, route, status, request ID and stack-trace structure intact so another administrator can still correlate the event.
Fix application exceptions first
Unhandled application failures are a common source of 500 responses. The log should identify the failing operation; fix that operation rather than masking the status with a custom error page.
Unhandled exceptions and runtime errors
Inspect the first exception for a null or missing value, invalid input assumption, syntax error, failed import, incompatible package or other runtime condition. Confirm that the code path handles expected failures and that unexpected exceptions are logged with enough context to reproduce them. A syntax or startup error can make every route fail, whereas a handler exception may affect only one endpoint.

Database and upstream calls
If the stack trace points to a database or another upstream service, verify the connection settings, credentials, network reachability and response handling used by that deployment. Distinguish an application-generated 500 from a gateway failure: the application may be converting an upstream error into 500, or the request may never reach the application at all. The log boundary tells you which case you have.
Startup, import and initialization failures
Check the process-start log after each deployment or restart. A failed module import, invalid environment variable or initialization exception can leave the process unable to serve any route. Correct the startup failure, restart only if the platform requires it, and then repeat the original request.

Change one thing at a time
Record the current release and configuration, make one targeted correction, and retest. Simultaneous code, permission and server changes remove the evidence needed to know which change fixed—or introduced—the fault.
Validate server and application configuration
A configuration file that is invalid, unreadable or inconsistent with the deployed application can produce 500 responses before request-handling code runs.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Check syntax and effective settings
- Validate the web-server configuration with the platform’s built-in validation or configuration-test command before reloading it.
- Check application configuration files for malformed syntax, duplicate keys and unsupported options.
- Confirm that the deployed application version expects the settings that are present.
- Verify environment variables, connection strings and secret references exist in the failing deployment.
- Review route rewrites and handlers for loops, missing targets or rules that send requests to a stopped process.
Compare the effective configuration—not just the source file—with a known-working deployment. A file can look correct in version control while a missing environment variable, different include path or deployment-time substitution makes the live configuration invalid.
Check file and directory permissions
The account running the web server or application worker must be able to read the configuration, code and required content, and must have write access only where the application genuinely needs it. An overly restrictive permission can prevent startup or template loading; an overly broad permission can create a security problem. Identify the service identity, inspect the permissions on each parent directory and file involved, correct the minimum required access, and retry the same request.
Check deployment completeness
Confirm that all required modules, compiled files, templates and static assets were deployed. A route that references a file absent from the release may fail only after a particular request reaches it. Compare the release manifest or deployment output with the files present on the server.
Check memory, CPU, disk and process state
Resource exhaustion can turn an otherwise valid request into a 500. Review host and process telemetry at the exact failure time rather than relying on current values after the incident has passed.

Memory and out-of-memory events
Look for operating-system or runtime out-of-memory events, worker-process termination and sudden increases in allocation or request size. If memory was exhausted, identify whether the trigger was a deployment, traffic pattern, unbounded query or leak. Freeing memory or restarting a process may restore service temporarily, but it does not explain why the limit was reached; retain the event and investigate the recurring cause.
CPU and disk exhaustion
Check whether CPU saturation delayed or crashed workers and whether the filesystem had enough free space for logs, temporary files and application writes. A full disk can prevent a process from starting or from writing the log needed to diagnose it. Remove or rotate data according to your retention policy, then verify that the application can create the files it requires.
Worker and site state
Confirm that the service, worker process and site are running. A stopped site or crashed worker cannot serve the application normally. If a restart is necessary, capture logs and process state before restarting when possible; the restart can erase useful evidence. Afterward, check startup logs and immediately repeat the captured request.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.IIS-specific diagnostics
On Microsoft IIS, the status alone is not enough. IIS records a status and substatus that narrow the investigation, while application and system logs provide the exception details.
Read IIS logs
- Find the IIS log entry for the recorded UTC time, host, path and method.
- Record
sc-statusandsc-substatusexactly; keep both values with the incident. - Compare the entry with the application log to determine whether IIS generated the response or passed it through from the application.
- Inspect the Windows application and system logs for the exception type, message, process termination or configuration error at the same time.
The common IIS causes documented by Microsoft include an ASP or ASPX page with a syntax error, web-server or application configuration that cannot be read or is invalid, and a stopped site. Check those conditions before making broad code changes.
Use Failed Request Tracing when the path is unclear
Enable Failed Request Tracing for the affected site and a narrowly defined failure condition when ordinary logs do not show which IIS module returned the error. Reproduce one request, inspect the resulting trace for the module and event that ended processing, then disable or narrow tracing when finished so production logging does not grow unnecessarily.

Do not expose detailed errors publicly
Detailed exception pages can help on a protected development or administrative endpoint, but exposing stack traces to public visitors can disclose paths, configuration and credentials. Collect details in server-side logs and return a controlled error response to users.
Retest after each targeted change
A fix is not complete when the error page disappears once. Verify that the original request now succeeds and that the underlying failure does not recur.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Repeat the exact URL, method, headers and representative body captured at the start.
- Confirm the HTTP status, response body and important headers.
- Test a nearby route and a normal user flow to detect collateral damage.
- Watch access, error and application logs during and after the retest.
- Record the change, time, result and any new warning so the next administrator can reconstruct the incident.
If the status changes from 500 to another error, treat that as new evidence rather than success. For example, a corrected application exception may reveal a separate dependency or routing problem.
Do not confuse 500 with 502 or 503
| Status | Meaning | Where to investigate first |
|---|---|---|
| 500 Internal Server Error | The server encountered an unexpected condition while handling the request. | Application exception, server configuration, permissions, resources and process state. |
| 502 Bad Gateway | A gateway or proxy received an invalid response from an upstream server. | Proxy-to-upstream connection, upstream availability and the response exchanged between them. |
| 503 Service Unavailable | The service is not ready to handle the request, commonly during maintenance or overload. | Service readiness, maintenance state, worker capacity and overload conditions. |
The distinction matters because changing application code will not repair a proxy that cannot obtain a valid upstream response, and restarting an application will not resolve a deliberately stopped or overloaded service until its readiness condition is addressed.
When you cannot access logs or configuration
If you manage only the website or application and cannot read server logs, configuration or process telemetry, provide the host administrator with the exact URL, method, UTC timestamp, response headers, response body and request ID. Include whether all routes or only one fail and whether the failure began after a deployment.
Ask for the matching web-server access/error entry and application stack trace rather than a screenshot of the browser page. Without server-side evidence, you can confirm scope and reproduce the problem but cannot reliably distinguish a code exception from an invalid configuration, permission failure, resource event or stopped site.
Recommended Free Tools
Prevent the next 500 incident
- Give each request a correlation ID and return it in the response so operators can match user reports to logs.
- Keep access, server-error and application logs with synchronized UTC timestamps.
- Capture exception type, message and call stack while redacting secrets.
- Validate server and application configuration before reloads or deployments.
- Use health and readiness checks that distinguish a running process from an application able to serve requests.
- Monitor memory, CPU, disk capacity, worker restarts and stopped-site events.
- Deploy changes in a way that preserves the last known-good release and allows a controlled rollback.
- Test representative routes after deployment and watch for recurring 500 responses.
These practices do not eliminate every server error, but they turn a generic status into a traceable event with a known request, failing layer and reversible change.
Quick Recap
A compact incident checklist
- Capture the exact request, UTC time, status, headers, body and request ID.
- Determine whether the failure affects one route, a deployment or the entire site.
- Match the request to web-server access/error logs and the application exception.
- Fix the first unhandled exception, failed dependency call or startup/import error.
- Validate configuration syntax, environment variables, rewrites and file permissions.
- Check memory, CPU, disk, worker crashes and whether the site or service is stopped.
- On IIS, record
sc-statusandsc-substatusand use Failed Request Tracing when needed. - Make one targeted change, repeat the original request and monitor for recurrence.
- Escalate with the preserved evidence when you cannot access the failing layer.
